I would have too. I also drink expired liquids, and use all other expired products. Only one I am more selective about is meds.

However, with meds, a doctor told me that most (except for, specifically, antibiotics) can probably be used for easily a year after expiration unless they were exposed to humidity.

Actually, no, you cannot always smell or taste if something is bad. That's a common misconception, but if it were true, no one would ever get food poisoning, would they? And people have food poisoning more often than you would think--it's often misdiagnosed as a virus.

I'll eat some things past their expiration date--dry pasta, rice, etc--as long as there aren't any hatched weevils in those things they're fine.

I wouldn't eat anything with fat (crackers, cookies, other baked goods) past the expiration date. Definitely nothing like meat or dairy. No canned goods either--their expiration dates are way too liberal, IMO. I actually won't eat canned goods if they're close to the expiration date--if I've had it on my shelf for a couple of months, I get rid of it when it comes to canned goods.

I know I'm a little over the top with my food issues, but I once lost a week of my life to food poisoning and have NEVER felt worse in my life. I prefer to attempt to avoid a repeat performance of that!

I definitely wouldn't ever chance anything with tomato in it past the expiration date.

If it is past by the sell by date a bit yes, because that is just the date the store should sell them by. I had a milk man in the grocery store tell me once that milk, providing it has been kept cold is good for a week after the sell by date. I would use cake mixes and things too if they are a bit past the sell by date.

No I don't. I sure wish they'd standardize the expiration dates so you would clearly know whether it's the "sell by" date or the "use by" date. And stamp the date--not a bunch of numbers you have to decipher--in large enough numbers to get our attention.

Yes, quite often (I do smell and look at it first). I imagine we ate a LOT of expired and old stuff before they atarted putting the expiration dates on things.

I had food poisoning too once and I agree Azzalea, I don't want a repeat performance! I got mine from a Chinese restaurant though.. there was a funny tasting piece of meat that I should have spit out. I paid for that mistake.

When I put away canned/boxed foods, I bring to the front the items I already have on hand.....some things I use a marking pen and write the exp dates extra large. I will eat/drink some things after the date marked, but not waaaayyy past it. By being careful with stored foods, I rarely have to toss foods that have 'expired' anymore.

Nope. I had food poisoning once, and I swear I will never eat anything "iffy". I sometimes go thru my refrigerator and throw out anything that's been opened. My friend Sue is the opposite. She never gets sick. She'll take a piece of moldy cheese, scrape off the mold, and eat the cheese.

I took a 1/2 gallon of milk back today. It's best by date was May 11th, and it was smelling and tasting 'off' a bit. I always look for milk in the back of the shelf with the date that is the latest date out. Same for my bread. I buy Amana potato bread, and there isn't any preservites in it.

Yes.

I often buy ahead when the price is right, so by the time I'm ready to use it it could be past the date. I shop at Sharp Shopper quite often and I hardly ever look at the dates any more because I've found that many of their products are dated far enough ahead that it isn't any different than the other stores. But the prices are.

My first DH was a meat cutter, and brought home some of the best food I ever ate that was out of date and could not be sold.
If it smells funny, no, I will pass. But it is rare that this happens.
I must have a stomache of steel, and so does DH, he will eat things that even smell bad.....yuk.
