Will someone kindly explain the Fab Shop Hop to me?

This is may be one of the dumbest questions I have asked here :).

I read references to the Shop Hops, and after seeing Jayne's beautiful quilt, I think I would like to know what it really is, and do you participate. (Maybe I don't want to know since I already can't keep up with myself!)

It's an online fabric shop-hop that takes place several times a year. There are close to 200 shops on the list; you visit each one's website and look for the bunny (most sites have pretty good hints or tell you outright where the bunny is). When you click on the bunny it takes you to a registration screen. Registering your finds gets you in the running for prizes.

Most of the shops have a sale associated with the Hop, so you can find some good bargains while you hop!

There are real life shop hops too! A group of shops get together and plan a weekend or period of time to be open at the same time. They offer incentives to come to their shop. The shops in my area also collectively choose a line of fabric and each shop creates a pattern using that fabric. You can get the pattern and fabric at each shop and end up with a sampler's worth of fabric/patterns.

It's a fun way to spend a weekend. Here in my area it happens in October.

Karen, I feel like I was there with you. I understand your excitement, it's the same rush I get at garage & yard sales when I find something I was dying to have & there it sits, right in front of me. Man, those little kiddo bunnies sure got dirty before you rescued them, like them alot better all cleaned up, they are perfect with momma in your bay window. You sure did good with all your great finds and all things you loved! Amazing how much pain we can endure for our treasure hunts! LOL Some days are just like that, you come home with the car packed to the roof & other days, it's just a hit & miss so-so day!!!

Not really. If you're in a circumstance where you will seriously have to go hungry if you don't eat food that isn't kosher, it's permissible to eat anything you can obtain that will contribute to your good health. In practice, that doesn't really come into play in a modern life of plenty. There is a very very strong prohibition against embarrassing someone. Some people who keep kosher will eat whatever is put in front of them when they're a guest in someone's home (assuming it is not immediately injurious to health (e.g., rotten) which is the highest standard) on the basis that it's more important not to embarrass the host than to not eat the traif (not kosher) food. Little children aren't responsible for keeping kosher, but they are responsible for minding their parents and learning. Sometimes they'll be given milk after meat without waiting the customary period, but they are generally given only kosher food to eat and told not to take food from people they don't know and trust. The meaning of "becoming a man" at a Bar Mitzvah is becoming responsible for following the laws, not ending childhood completely. Anything that you really need to do for your health is acceptable. If you can find something as good for you that allows you to keep kosher that's better, but invalids aren't required to maintain kashrut. Neither are pregnant or nursing women who are in distress. That doesn't mean these people are going to be eating lobster, but they might eat a (kosher) butter biscuit after becoming nauseous eating meat, or might eat a gelatin in the hospital that isn't kosher. I'm no Catholic scholar, but I believe not eating meat is considered a "penance" and that there are other penances that may be substituted for it that are of equal weight. There is no "free pass" on kashrut because either something is fit to eat or it isn't.

We live in a very large Midwestern city school district. The school district budget is MILLIONS of dollars a year. But, by the time any $ trickels down to our local elementary school, it's pennies. The teachers ar our elementary school are so dedicated and work so hard! There are only 4 families active on the PTA, but most families take part in the fund raisers. Here are some of the things PTA pays for at the school: 1. The biggest item is "teacher wish list". Teachers can submit requests every month for items that the district will not cover. Some examples from last year - a new pencil sharpener for the third grade classroom, to replace the broken one that would not work and to keep the kids from having to go across the hall to the 2nd grade room to sharpen pencils. Yes, the district would not buy a new pencil sharpener - outrageous! New basketballs for the gym teacher, to replace the worn out, cracked ones that would not bounce right - the district would not buy new balls. A series of video tapes for the speech thrapist to use with her kids - the district would not buy. Paper for the laser printers in the office - the district severly rations paper and there is never enough. Special items for the occupational therpists - district won't cover anything beyond what they consider the minimum for any therapists. Extra diapers for a diaper-dependent disabled child who is in a wheelchair, whose parents couldn't afford to keep extra diapers at school, so the techer kept buying extra packs until she finally asked the PTA to buy a case to keep in the classroom. This list goes on and on. Every month, I am outraged at what the district won't purchase for the teachers - basics, not luxury items! Teacher already buy so much from their meager paychecks! 2. The ribbons & certificates for honor roll award - district won't buy them. 3. The school carnival. The PTA puts this on for the kids, it's not a money maker, and the kids LOVE it. 4. The school open house. The district won't cover refreshments at open house, so the PTA buys them. 5. PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT. The district does not have a single dime budgeted for playground equipment. Every year before school starts, each elementary playground is inspected, and unsafe equipment is torn down, but is not replaced by the district. If the school has a playground, it has to be paid for by the PTA. This is the primary function of most PTAs in my areas, because playground equipment costs thousands of dollars! 6. Teacher appreciation breakfast the day before school starts, a mid-year teacher appreciation lunch, and an end of the year teacher appreciation breakfast. These teachers work so hard, it's the least we can do to have a meal brought in three times a year! 7. End-of-year field day and pizza party for the whole school, on the last day of school. The field day includes carnival rides and games, snocones, and pizza - all free of charge to the kids. Sorry this is so long, but I get irritated when parents complian about PTA selling stuff. If you'd like to know why your kindergartener is selling gift wrap, attend a PTA meeting and ask them just where the money goes. Hopefull it goes right back to the kids, through their teachers or directly!

I didn't read the other responses because I am short on time. I know how you feel and I have been down this road except this was my childhood best friend. Once I got married at 20, she was not married did not have Kids but was still very needy of my attention. Every single day, she called and called and I ignored her. With both of my children, she just showed up at the hospital without being invited and would NOT leave. She even told DH to go home and rest and she would stay with me and baby over night. He was like huh? I don't think so.. When I was single and going through my divorce, we did hang out a lot. I noticed my other friends were not calling as much. I asked one why? They said 'because your tag along annoys everyone' I started having to turn my phone off and never post to myspace/Facebook anything so that I could have my other friends too. She became demanding. 'I need to talk to you!!!' in text messages. Voice mails she sounded annoyed and exhausted with her attempts to reach me. Hellllloooooooo? WHY aren't you answering!!!? Call me BACK! So... I had enough. About two years ago, I exploded. I finally just said 'look. I love you. We have been friends forever but I have a family that I have to tend to and cannot sit on the phone with you every night. I get one or two quiet times a week and I have to share that with myself and my other friends. I do want to chat with you but sometimes I'm not available and you seem to get frustrated that I am not at your beck and call. I work full time, you do not PLUS I have kids and a husband to spend time with and you do not so ... I would love to chat on occassion but I can't deal with your demanding Phone calls and texts' She was hurt. I didn't hear from her for months. But finally she called and said hey just seeing how you are doing. Going months without hearing from her made me realize I DID want to continue our friendship but not like it was. We enjoy a short chat about every other month now. Of course she has a baby and is obviously BUSY. Currently she is not speaking to me because I could not make it to her baby's bday party a few weeks ago and that's fine. My daughter had a dance recital and I explained that but see now it's about her kid.. It never could be about MY kid... So if I hear from her I hear from her if not, oh well but it sure is nice NOT being suffocated or having to dodge phone calls. I would rather have a bill collector call than read her harassing text messages. So I think you should just be honest. Just tell her. You are going to get what you want if you tell her your true feelings AND it's such a relief. She doesn't live near you so you won't have to run in to her everytime you go to the post office or something.. But do it for you and to give you some peace that's what you want anyway right? It's a hard decision but being honest is the best for YOU.

I knew about the 'local' shop hop ~ not so local since there,sadly, aren't many local shops. Our area may include your area Jennifer~I'll need to pay closer attention.

The website looks very interesting. I didn't think to look for a website strictly about the event - Like I said Dummy question. I see that bunny and just never had the whole concept. More ideas, and more ways to save me money while I spend a bundle!!

There are other online hops besides FabShop, too. There is Annilee's Treasure Hunt and Quilt Dash, and probably others. If you click the logos on a shop's website, it will take you to the site for the hop.

You can waste a lot of time on the internet with these! :) I only do the FabShop Hop and so far have only won a few $10 gift certificates.

I can't say I get the idea of an online shop hop either. However, the real life one in my area starts next week. It's fun. It goes from the southern part of SoCal below San Diego out to the desert, way up in the mountains and north not too far below Santa Barbara. Aside from finding a lot of interesting quilt shops, I saw a lot of SoCal that I had previously missed out on.

This year I'm doing it in a hybrid car with navigation. Can you say YAY?! I can -- YAY for not getting lost and YAY for saving gas! I got the new car because last year I took out the bumper of my old car in a crowded parking lot at one of the quilt shops. Fortunately the Cash for Clunkers deal came along at roughly the same time and this year I have navigation! AND this year I'm on the hunt for a particular color of blue batik to finish my lambies quilt so the hop comes at a particularly convenient time.

The real life shops have interesting things like demos, games, prizes, food and each gives you a free pattern with a small package of fabric for assembling it. Each of the sub-areas (our huge area is broken up into 4 sub-areas) designs a themed little wall hanging size quilt from the free patterns.

I'm doing the fabshop hop too. I printed off the quilt blocks from the last one, but don't know when I'll have time to make it. I haven't found any bonus bunnies this time. Darn. I'm assuming that means we won't get a pattern this time? It's still fun, but the thrill of a bonus bunny was great.
