Cabinet and Interior Door hardware

I am building a new construction home. The interior doors are two panel masonite doors and I really like the oil rubbed bronze hardware. I have my heart set on polished nickel for the kitchen cabinet hardware. Will this look odd?

I am thinking about an off white (not cream) beaded inset cabinet style (island will be darker stain to compliment an ebony or dark stain oak floor). Calacutta marble counters.

Does anyone think the door hardware should be some color other than oil rubbed bronze?

I don't think it looks odd at all. Consider your cabinets a piece of furniture. Consider your furniture pieces with pulls--do the pulls on your dresser/china cabinet, etc match your door handles? Odds are, the answer is no. You have the same flexibility when it comes to built-ins and cabinetry. With that being said, I don't think it would look right to do say polished nickel on the base cabs and ORB on the uppers in the same room--those need to match one another.

Since you asked about color scheme, we have Venetian Bronze/ORB levers on all 2 panel masonite doors. Here's the rundown on the cabinet color and pull color...

-kitchen has white cabs with pewter glaze & a dark stained island & hood with the antiqued pewter pulls.

-master bath has espresso cabs with antiqued pewter pulls

-mudroom & family room built-ins are painted SW 'Creamy' (slightly off white) with antiqued pewter pulls.

-laundry has white cabs with polished nickel pulls

-kids' baths have espresso cabs with polished nickel pulls

-powder room has espresso cabs with Venetian bronze/ ORB pulls

Thanks for your input. I actually was not very clear on what I meant. Our patio doors in the kitchen nook and family room and the doors in the whole house have ORB. You will see all the hardware on all the patio doors and the doors on say the door to the pantry and they will all have ORB. But all the kitchen cabinet doors and drawers will be polished nickel? I have noticed people usually get ORB in the kitchen if the other doors to other room etc have ORB. What do you think?

FWIW, and possibly unfortunately, I agree with your friend. The short moment when the door is open isn't sufficient to justify matching the satin nickle inside; and IMHO, metals within eyeball range should be at least of similar color. One sees (even if not consciously studies) the exterior lights and exterior knobs as a decor unit, and upon departing, the room's interior knobs (whether cabinet or several doors) are a different unit. I realize the SET of mix/match knobs looks strange while it's in your hand, but honestly, once installed, I don't think anyone ever stands at the door's edge in order to eyeball the interior and exterior knobs at the same time. I suspect you'd have to work hard to name any m/m sets in your present world, and yet there are likely to be many (especially on bathroom doors).

I think brushed nickel looks great with any color scheme, so you can't go wrong there. I also know that this is one of those things that I overthought at one point. Unless your house is a showhouse or going to be in a home decor magazine I think it's fine to replace them as the budget permits. It's truly amazing how you just get used to some things in your house over time. And no one is going to leave your house thinking, "Oh my gosh, can you believe it? Their doorknobs didn't all match! The horror!" Of course it would be nice to have the wherewithal to replace everything in a house whenever we wanted to, but that's just not realistic, and we have to remember that we LIVE in these houses. They aren't going to be perfect all the time and that's OK.

Totally up to you and what the room dictates. Brushed nickel is more popular these days and it really varies, as to what is right, from room to room.

I have ORB on french door that goes to yard from kitchen, and throughtout house doors, and planning on polished nickel for my inset white cabinets in kitchen.I think it is too busy with the ORB on all hinges, and knobs in kitchen, I think it will be a nice break from all the others

I have stainless on all doors and kitchen cabinet pulls but used black and ORB on living room builtins and light fixtures and ceiling fan. I like the mix of metals, you can mix what looks good to you and it will look great.

We have a mix of metals all over including our side door which is in our kitchen. I would love to change out the door knobs and fixtures on all our doors since they are a bright brass and I hate it but it's just an expense I don't want right now.
