Just want to say love those chairs! and yes lets see the whole room, cause it sounds wonderful.

The chairs are magnificent. Do you have an area rug under the DR table? A patterned area rug would be a factor in choosing a fabric.

Because the chairs have so much detailing I think a wide striped fabric in brown and blue would work nicely.

Honestly, IMHO, the chairs deserve more than a brown fabric even if it were a brown on brown textured design.

OK, here is a picture of my DR chair. I have also included a picture of the other side of the DR so you can see the colors in the room. Walls are BM Coastal Dunes, chocolate brown drapes (only double windows in the room) and the corner cabinet is painted pale blue on the inside. I was trying to stay away from mostly blue because my taste changes ALL the time, and I don't want to be stuck with blue.
I would really appreciate any ideas that you have!

I would definitely not do a dark brown. I think it would be bland. I agree with Mona that a Brown Blue and cream stripe fabric would look great. You don't have any pattern in the room so I also think a larger scale print(floral) with those colors would be fun too. Nice room BTW!

I think you're right that the current fabric is not doing them justice, and that one of the great blue and cream stripes would look wonderful on those chairs. I'd just let the brown of the chairs be the brown. (Odd sentence...but you know what I mean...!)

I noticed in your picture that your chairs have an edge trim around the bottom of the cushion. I can't remember what that trim is called -- it's like a tube of fabric made of the same fabric as the cover. (brain cramp). Anyway, unless you are a good seamstress and willing to buy lots of fabric (that trim is cut on the bias and takes a couple extra yards per chair), make sure you'll be happy with the covers if they don't have that trim. You might want to remove just one seat from a chair and make sure the trim isn't covering a raw wood edge or something.

It's probably FINE, but I went through this conversation recently because I wanted to recover my ten DR chairs and my mom pointed out the trim/edging. I would have had to buy a ridiculous amount of fabric if I wanted the same trimmed style.

I just wanted you to be aware of that edging and make sure you'd be happy without it.

newdawn....I am LOL because that fabric is one of my favorites, but it really does not go well in my home. I LOVE it though!

That fabric edging is called piping. Seems like you can cover the seat without an edging too, that is what I did with mine. I have dark brown wood and an ecru colored fabric. When I covered my seats I did not put any edging on it. I agree...a lighter fabric would be good for your beautiful chairs.

I'd recommend asking Ballard for a fabric sample before I commit. And I am not convinced that that pattern, wonderful though it surely is, will do your chairs much good.

I also think that using cording is recommended...you can buy it ready-made in solid colors, or make it yourself from a plain, less expensive fabric, and it serves to give a proper finished look, and to reinforce the seams. In ready-mades, I usually use the darkest tone in whatever the fabric pattern is, or a contrast color, or if it's a solid, and can't be matched exactly, black, or a darker tone of the fabric.

I love your chair too. We have the British Classics Dining set as well, but with the older splatback chairs. I reupholstered them about 4 years ago. It was pretty easy to do. I went with a striped fabric and bought piping from Joann Fabrics with the lip on it. Here are a few pics:

tam....thank you for posting those pics. Your chairs are gorgeous. For some reason, I love stripes whenever I see them in someone else's home....I just don't "take" to them in my own, though. Did you see the fabric I was thinking of from Calico Corners? What do you think of it?

declansmom: I love that CC fabric - really pretty! I noticed that the description says "light use furniture" so you'll have to take that into consideration regarding how much your chairs get used.

I ended up not recovering my chairs... yet. I didn't find a fabric that I love (well I did but it was $95/yard so I held off.) I really like the look of the piping because it's very tailored and I'm not sure I can do that myself.

tam184: your chairs look great! Looking for coordinating trim (rather than making piping from the same fabric) is a very good idea. Calico Corners used to sell all kinds of trim, but not in the showroom near me anymore.

I love the Calico Corners check for you, and I think it will be fine on your chairs. Light use fabrics usually do pretty well when tightly upholstered like they are on wooden DR chairs, and less well on chairs or sofas that are subject to hands and feet, and have lots of seams and corners. And I think cording like Tam184's in a darker shade of the brown make the right transition from fabric to wood, and would look wonderful.

I LOVE that Robert Allen fennel fabric from CC! I've been trying to find a spot to use it in my house, but I change my color scheme so much I need to stay a little more neutral.

Would it be possible for any of the great photoshoppers out there to PS the Lenoxx fennell fabric on my chair to see what it might look like? As I am a very visual person, it would be greatly appreciated!

The fennell fabric is very pretty. Are you going to add some green accessories to your room to coordinate with the fabric? Right now, it looks like you have gold walls, brown drapes, and the light blue on your corner cabinet. I wonder if you might want to consider something with some gold in it?

If Calico Corners is near you, why not swing by and ask for a large swatch. The CCs near me are so great about giving out swatches. Then you can see it against the wood and in the lighting of your dining room. I do that with all my fabrics before I commit to buying them. I would also recommend spraying the fabric with Scotchquard before attaching the seats back onto the chairs (test a sample first to make sure nothing happens to it).

hi tam....I already have some green accents in my DR (in the part that I didn't post a pic of!) I also have green accents in my LR which is adjacent to the DR. The walls are more of a creamy color than the picture shows.
The CC near me has gotten terrible. You can never get a sample on the spot. They order it and send it to you and it is so small that you can't even get an idea of what it would look like.
If anyone could photoshop the fabric on the chair for me, that would be great!!!!

Don't have photoshop, so here is a rather clumsy mockup in Paint. The pattern would be smaller IRL. (I think the swatch shown on the web site is 12x12" or less.)
