Whistling electric kettle? Or non-plastic one?

hello - sorry if this is a bit OT, but I was wondering if anyone knew of a whistling electric kettle? I am the worst one for turning it on and realizing an hour later I am still craving a cup of tea...

Failing that, can anyone recommend an electric kettle ie/ a metal one, that doesn't impart that plastic taste to water? Even with cleaning out a new kettle it still has that slight plastic-y taste...

I guess a metal, whistling electric kettle is pushing my luck?

Krups SS turns off after the boiling point is reached, but doesn't whistle. That feature is common among electric kettles.

That annoyed me about the electric ones also, but I guess turning off is a safety feature so it doesn't boil away if you don't hear it or ignore the whistle. After 5 years, I think I am finally used to it.

I usually just put my cuttings in one of those black plastic containers that plants come in from the store. Set it in full sun on the black top and I have a pretty good rooting percentage. I don't water until I see some leaves starting. Maybe just mist it with a spray bottle now and then. I've read those instructions on that web site before. Sounds like it should work. I just cut the bottom of my cuttings at a 45 degree angle to increase the rooting surface. I guess thats the same idea in using the peeler to make the 3 small strips on the sides. ntt_hou, there are some really whizzbang kettles out there in the market that allow you to choose the temperature the water gets to. I used to love a whistling kettle on the stove until the day I came home to find ours sitting on the back brick steps at an odd angle, and went in to find spots burned into the linoleum from the stove to the back door, and a slug of solidified aluminium on the stove itself. DH had left the kettle on the stove forgotten for so long it boiled dry and then melted the thick aluminium bottom right off. He came in, realised what had happened and then thought it would be a good idea to carry the melted kettle outside, leaving a trail of dripping molten metal on the linoleum and a long spike off the bottom that cooled quickly without dripping, resulting in the kettle resting at an odd angle. I bought the auto shut off electric kettle the next day. On a similar note, a friend's elderly mother developed Alzheimer's and burned several kettles out on her stove before the friend stopped replacing them.

I have the basic Breville. Not the one with all the panel settings. I was hesitant because of some bad reviews...so far it has been fine and does what it should do quickly. My only complaint is it heats up to a boil with so much steam before the 'ding' and before shutting off. If used under a cabinet it will throw off so much steam that your cabinet underneath will be sopping wet. Daily use would be tragic. Maybe mine is timed wrong. Or a cover over the spout to contain all that steam. What I do like is that it is made with the most non-plastic parts of all the electric kettles i researched.

If you can, consider putting in an instant hot water dispenser. No more waiting for the water to boil! You can have tea any time you like!

I'd definitely recommend one that shuts off when it boils.

So much safer. And uses much less energy.

I never have to worry I've left the kettle or the stove on.

Mine (Bodum Ibis. Plastic though.) snaps off with an audible click that I can hear from the next room.

I don't think the instant hot taps get water hot enough to make proper tea, if you're fussy about tea. Maybe for coffee, which likes the water a little cooler.

I'm in love with my Chantal whistling teakettle. The whistle mimics the sound of a train whistle (in a nice way). This means you never ever leave it on and forget it. I've had mine for about 15 years, and there's no wear and tear whatsoever.

They are pricey ($120 at Williams-Sonoma), but occasionally they show up at TJMaxx or Home Goods.

I'm with annes arbor - I am an advid tea drinker (morning, afternoon and night). For me boiling the water in a kettle on the stove is part of the soothing affect as long as your kettle has a lovely whistle! The good ones may be a bit pricey but they last forever and it offers a relaxing soothing feeling as well. My children enjoy the sound of the whistle too and yell "Mamma's tea is ready!" when it sounds. It's a morning ritual and one I know they will remember for the rest of their lives just as I have the same fond memory of my grandmothers tea kettle (which is where I was introduced to the soothing princples of tea and the process).
