We are between two rivers, each about 7 to 10 miles away. Also not far from the Chesapeake Bay.

Marshall, here's more on your west coast woes : 'Strange Things Happening' to Pacific Coast Marine Life By Terence Chea Associated Press posted: 01 August 2005 04:43 pm ET SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Marine biologists are seeing mysterious and disturbing things along the Pacific Coast this year: higher water temperatures, plummeting catches of fish, lots of dead birds on the beaches, and perhaps most worrisome, very little plankton -- the tiny organisms that are a vital link in the ocean food chain. Is this just one freak year? Or is this global warming? Few scientists are willing to blame global warming, the theory that carbon dioxide and other manmade emissions are trapping heat in the Earth's atmosphere and causing a worldwide rise in temperatures. Yet few are willing to rule it out. "There are strange things happening, but we don't really understand how all the pieces fit together,'' said Jane Lubchenco, a zoologist and climate change expert at Oregon State University. "It's hard to say whether any single event is just an anomaly or a real indication of something serious happening.'' Scientists say things could very well swing back to normal next year. But if the phenomenon proves to be long-lasting, the consequences could be serious for birds, fish and other wildlife. This much is known: From California to British Columbia, unusual weather patterns have disrupted the marine ecosystem. Normally, in the spring and summer, winds blow south along the Pacific Coast and push warmer surface waters away from shore. That allows colder, nutrient-rich water to well up from the bottom of the sea and feed microscopic plants called phytoplankton. Phytoplankton are then eaten by zooplankton, tiny marine animals that include shrimp-like crustaceans called krill. Zooplankton, in turn, are eaten by seabirds and by fish and marine mammals ranging from sardines to whales. But this year, the winds have been unusually weak, failing to generate much upwelling and reducing the amount of phytoplankton. Off Oregon, for example, the waters near the shore are 5 to 7 degrees warmer than normal and have yielded about one-fourth the usual amount of phytoplankton, said Bill Peterson, an oceanographer with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Newport, Ore. "The bottom has fallen out of the coastal food chain, and there's just not enough food out there,'' said Julia Parrish, a seabird ecologist at the University of Washington in Seattle. Seabirds are clearly distressed. On the Farallon Islands west of San Francisco, researchers this spring noted a steep decrease in nesting cormorants and a 90 percent drop in Cassin's auklets -- the worst in more than 35 years of monitoring. On Washington state's Tatoosh Island, common murres -- a species so sensitive to disruptions that scientists consider it a harbinger of ecological change -- started breeding nearly a month late. It was the longest delay in 15 years of monitoring. Researchers have also reported a sharp increase in dead birds washing up in California, Oregon and Washington. Along Monterey Bay in Central California, there are four times the usual number of dead seabirds, said Hannah Nevins, a scientist at Moss Landing Marine Laboratories. "Basically, they're not finding enough food, and they use up the energy that's stored in their muscles, liver and body fat,'' Nevins said. Fish appear to be feeling the effects, too. NOAA found a 20 percent to 30 percent drop in juvenile salmon off the coasts of Oregon, Washington and British Columbia in June and July, compared with the average over the previous six years. And researchers counted the lowest number of juvenile rockfish in more than 20 years of monitoring in Central and Northern California. Fewer than 100 were caught between San Luis Obispo and Fort Bragg this year, compared with several thousand last year. Scientists have seen some of these strange happenings before during El Nino years, when higher water surface temperatures in the equatorial Pacific alter weather patterns worldwide. But the West Coast has not had El Nino conditions this year. As for the possibility that this is being caused by global warming, scientists are not so sure, since climate change is believed to be a gradual process, and what is happening this year is relatively sudden. But "if we did see this next year, the notion that global warming plays a role in this carries more weight,'' said Nathan Mantua, a climate expert at the University of Washington in Seattle.

Hi China Cat Sunflower, Yes, I know people do all sorts of things that compromise our livers and immune systems, that does not mean we need to ADD to the problem. And 100 years ago, children did not develop diabetes. What changed? Ever wonder why there are more cases of childhood obesity and diabetes? Ever wonder why there is an explosion of "rare" diseases now showing up in more and more of the population (my 33 year old male cousin has been diagnosed with ocular pre-tumors which has been previously found only in menopausal women. And what is a "pre-tumor"?)? Ever wonder why there is an explosion in ADD, ADHD and autism in boys under 25 in the US (both of my nephews are afflicted Â one with ADHD and the other with autism)? Ever wonder why non-smokers are now getting LUNG CANCER (can it be all of the cancerous fumes)? There is something going on that canÂt be explained away with little more than a hope that our livers will filter out the poisons. We need to stop them from entering our bodies and environment from the beginning. The sad thing itÂs not "industrial wastes", but people driving 6 miles to get a gallon of milk. It is millions of cars on the road carrying only one person. It is millions of people driving two hours a day Â ten hours a week Â just to get to work. It is millions of people driving everywhere they go that is creating the problems which contribute to the pollution. This pollution is coming back to haunt us and it isnÂt just going away with wishful thinking. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ candice... people let their children eat fast food. lots of people let their children drink koolaid. and oddly enough, our livers aren't wearing out all that much faster than they were a hundred years ago. industrial wastes have been a problem since the dawn of civilization- the emperor Hadrian mentioned that crops weren't growing downstream of the potteries, which used all sorts of things in their glazes. we have things like livers because 'pure' is a rare thing in this world- even without humans, there are whole stretches of places with mercury counts that give me the willies, just for starters. there is a balance between being afraid to eat a snowflake, and dumping car oil in the storm drain, I think.

I am glad to hear about that. I had some given to me years ago when they first came out. I tried it to shower with but didn't like it. Well I started having a problem with my ear. My doctor got his scope and was doing a through examination of my ears. He said well this is the strangest thing. You have these tiny tiny blue balls way down in your ear canal. What could it be. We had no idea. So he flushed them multiple times but some were stuck. I was wondering what on earth it could be. The next day in the shower I was looking right at the bottle in the shower rack. And bam I realized that the tiny blue balls were those dang scrubbing beads. I called my doctor, who was also my neighbor and friend, and told him what it was. He was astounded. I threw that bottle in the trash. He said he didn't see how that could be good at all, no telling what they can do to the ear drum. So if you are using the stuff be aware that you probably have them down in your ears.

Martinca, I will never forget an article once in one of the very chi-chi decor magazines, about a woman and her decorator who remodeled her private jet(!). The line that will live in my mind was one of those obnoxious humblebrag little jewels along of the lines that the Mrs. 'just wanted a new bathroom cabinet with a drawer for her makeup on the jet'. Oooooookay ;). As for us, we had a wonderful 4th. We're down in the Keys house for the week; my daughter and her lifelong BFF (we think of her as our second girl) are down from DC-fun fact, it's been cooler in Florida than where they live!-and my DIL had the day off so was here too-son had to work. My sister came down and we went to the local parade which happens to stage and launch literally at the end of our block so a coupla folding chairs and bingo, morning entertainment. Then another friend of daughter's drove down, my dad spontaneously decided to come as well and we also had my cousin, her husband, his sister and BIL who sailed their boat down for the holiday week. Some folks went out diving while others lounged beside or in the pool. We did a simple cookout, and by early evening some of the young folks went out to party and see fireworks, the local visitors went home, my sister decided to stay overnight and a wonderful time was had by all. This house has turned out to exceed our wildest hopes as a gathering spot for holidays so another lovely memory of a perfect day is in the books.

The Thames River, that has a North Branch and South Branch meet in downtown London, which is a claim that their namesakes can't make, is about 7 miles away.

It feeds into Lake St. Clair, about 70 miles away, the smallest of the Great Lakes, just above Detroit (that's north-west of Windsor).

I live about 40 miles from Lake Huron, above Lake St. Clair, about 10 miles from Lake Erie and about 75 miles from Lake Ontario.

Occasionally get accused of being all wet. I suspect that such claimants judge that I could be all wet even in the desert.

A big ole creek that runs behind our house. Its about 1/4 of a mile. In my younger days I used to walk the grandchildren down there to play on the sandbar. Now if I want to go I have to go in the club car.

Cedar Lake - 7 miles long and 1 mile wide at the widest, just north of Oscoda, MI! It's right out my front door.
Only 1 1/2 miles to Lake Huron, we call that our "ocean".

Like Nita's,it's more of a pond but it's called a lake.Actually there are two,one 5 mi. to the E with swimming and fishing and small motor boats and another 5 mi. to the NW.Just fishing and boats with no motors.

A cow tank 60-70 feet from the House. But, 3 miles from the Colorado River and 71 miles from the Gulf. Only 56 miles to the nearest Lake for boating.

For the 1st 55 years of my life, I lived from 1/2 to 2 miles on the Susquehanna River. From 55 yrs old to now-I live 4 miles east of the Gulf of Mexico.

River. I'm only about 2 short blocks away from the Susquehanna River.

That's funny. I just realized I grew up living 2 blocks from the Lackawanna River and for a time I lived about 2 blocks (and a highway) away from the Delaware River.

I live on an Island in the Pacific..we are surrounded by the Puget Sound. LOL
My personal drive to the "water" is 1.5 miles west to the open shipping lanes Straight of Juan de Fuca, or 1 mile to the inlet harbor that my town is named after.

I am about 3 minutes from the Mississipi River by car. There is a swimming lake about 15 minutes from me, Weaver Lake in Maple Grove, Mn. I haven't been there in about 5 years. It gets pretty green in the summer because of run off from the area and all the houses fertilizing their yards.
