I'm back!! And I have a question about magnifying lenses
Comments (10)Thanks guys, I will indeed check out the links you offered. One of the farm service companies here is advertising a Bausch & Lomb 20x for something like 18.00 and from some of the few prices I have seen so far this might be a nice deal. Cathy, I just had a mental vision of myself with those over-the-head lenses on...maybe that's a cheaper cure for my astigmatism?? At least then I could pluck my own eyebrows a bit more efficiently!...See MoreI need a reading/magnifying lamp
Comments (3)DH is blind (light perception in one eye; counts fingers in the other) and teaches kids who are visually impaired/blind. What I can tell you about magnifiers is that no matter how good they are, you still have to deal with personal preference. Especially since macular degeneration is about loss of the central field of vision, it would be best if you could take your mother somewhere to try our different devices. How much magnification is needed? Remember that more magnification means that less text is displayed. Reading 2x magnification isn't greatly different than reading unenlarged text, but at 10x you're looking at parts of words. Where does your mother read? If she's willing to sit at a table, a good goose-neck desk lamp, a plain magnifier and possibly a reading stand will give here a lot of flexibility. On most hand-held magnifiers, the light is not adjustable. DH's favorite pocket magnifier hasn't been made for many years. His second choice would be a Bausch and Lomb. They aren't terribly expensive, but they're not illuminated. The illuminated hand magnifiers are nice enough, but the bulbs tend to burn out quickly. I'd probably go for an LED or Xenon version. At the higher price points: The SmartView by Humanware (around $600) is very portable and nice when it works. We had quality issues with both the original one I purchased and the one that was sent as a replacement. The Amigo by Enhanced Vision ($1700) isn't portable enough to use in the grocery store, but if you're seated at a table to read a book or other text, it's wonderful. It's far the best quality of the various low vision aids for reading in our house. If you don't have a local store for low vision aids, check the link below. I have purchased from them and they do have a reasonable return policy. Here is a link that might be useful: Magnifiers at Independent Living...See MoreMagnifiers or Loupes for Plant Inspection
Comments (12)Ewwmayo, Magnifying glasses are definitely easier to hold and focus, but in my experience they provide lower levels of magnification and significantly higher amounts of distortion. For me, the image quality I see through my loupe is worth the annoyance factor, which definitely becomes less annoying with practice. But you can't get away from the fact that it's always awkward to place your head inches from your subject. It's very possible I just haven't experienced a good quality magnifying glass, and perhaps I'll try another soon. I do have a cheap plastic version of the 60-100X "plant scope", but I find it impossible to hold steady enough to focus at those magnification levels, and most of the time I want to look at leaves that are still on plants (or stems or other parts of my living plants), so I rarely use it. It is really fun to use on leaves and other things you can lay flat on a table. Pagan, If you are interested in photographing the kind of thing you see through the little plant scope, there's a large variety of usb microscopes that make it really easy to digitally capture images at high levels of magnification. They range widely in price you should definitely look into this, I'm sure the results would be amazing based on the quality both of the photos and plants that you've posted.
