Sheer Descent vs. Scuppers

Our pool design has 4 water features that can either be scuppers (created by the masons) or sheer descents in our 2-foot raised beam wall.

I would like to know opinions on these two options. I seem to lean towards scuppers for some unknown reason, but frankly haven't seen enough of either to make an educated decision.

I think my logic is that the pvc sheers will give out over time, while the scuppers will hopefully remain working over time.

If anyone could post their opinions and/or pictures it would be greatly appreciated.

I guess mine would be called scuppers. I like them pretty well and they put out alot of water.

summeratthelake, thanks for sharing. What a beautiful pool! Can you share the details? What is the plaster and color? I really like your scuppers. That further pushes me to go with my gut.

I believe every riverbend sandler pool in dfw is made that way regardless of yard space. I asked the pool builder and he gave me a reason but unfortunately it's all Greek to me. It did worry me, but they build so many pools for so many years, you'd think there would be a big outcry or it wouldnt pass inspection if it was bad. If you search for riverbend on the forum you can find a ton of pics of their pools built this way. Not saying it's right or wrong, it's just how they do it. I'm trusting them.....hope I don't regret it in 10 years.

You can't run the sheer and the spa at the same time. The spa will empty. You won't get enough flow through the 2" line to the spa to make bypassing the filter worthwhile. Trying to bypass the filter is an exercise in futility. No valve actuators for residential pools that I know of can do three of more positions. They all do two. The relays click on and off with board supplied power. What they are relaying can be anything as long as its not more than 3 HP total power from the line side to the load side of each relay. It can open or close a fireman's switch which has only continuity, 12V for your lights, 120VAC or 240. It doesn't care what you are using on the line. Whatever is there, when the relay trips on, goes to the other side. Scott

spa spillover vs. independent water feature

Depends on what you want. We had the same dilemma. I wanted the spillover, I am cheap lol. My wife wanted a water feature that was quite audible. After checking out some spa spillovers, we decided it would not suit her needs. She loves the sound of running water, so we put in a 3 foot sheer descent. It was an extra $1500 and did include a separate pump. The beauty is she can run it alone or with other features. When it is on with the regular circulation with the built in bubblers on the sun shelf, its definitely a water full sound. Also the kids love playing in the sheer descent, it pumps roughly 90 GPM so its a real back massager too! Money well spent in our case. Hope that helps.

I have no automation and use the VF as the timer and love it. Highly recommended. I understand pentair has a new model that's priced between the VS and the VF and has timers like the VF. Internet prices on these pumps are pretty reasonable. Jeff

I wanted a natural/lagoon look for my pool so I went with all natural solid stone on the coping, beam wall and steps. Went with pebbletec Tahoe Blue all the way to the coping (no waterline tile)Pentair all the way with a SWG,Easytouch w/wireless remote,3' to 6'5" deep and about 22,000 gallons, sand filter, whisperflo for filter, superflo for water feature, and Challenger pump for the Legend cleaner. I couldn't believe how effortless my pool was to maintain and clean my first year..only hope it goes this easy next year.
I have watched your pool build and it looks really cool..keep up with the photos.
btw...The Big L is one of my all time favorite movies
