Yes, I do have it, and use it quite a lot. I also have the 1975 edition. Have to admit though, I had to look up "cockaigne" in the dictionary! I highly recommend the recipe for beef stew Gaston, especially if it is served in a small bowl made of Cuban bread.

I have it and it's been my constant go-to book for 30+ years. I always give one to brides/grooms to-be.

I bought it as a young bride and have given it to a few brides including my daughter. She saw how much I liked some of her cooking from the new edition and bought the new edition for me a few Christmases ago. The pork section is so different from old cookbooks, including the earlier editions of Joy.

The one I have was on the seventh printing in 1977. First printing was '75 so I guess it's the same book. I use it a lot mainly as a reference. Fun reading, too.

Mine is from 1953, and is held together (somewhat) by tape. It belonged to my aunt, who was a wonderful cook and baker. I will keep this book always because she wrote notes and comments on the recipes. Whenever I make a new dish, I check to see if my aunt made changes to the ingredients or instructions, and I always follow her comments. "The Joy of Cooking" is by far my favorite cookbook.

I have 2 an older one and not so newer one. I would have to go look up the printing dates, but right now that is in another room, for another time.;) I use to collect cookbooks,(I literally have at last counting over 350) but then I started thinking, I can't cook all this stuff, and my daughter will end up selling these in a yardsale, so STOP! (was I obsessed, or what?) Now when I go by a cookbook for sale whether it be at a thirft store, restaurant, or bookstore, I turn my head, and pat my pocket book, and tell myself "Well done, commrade!!"

I have the 1975 version in paperback. It is usually the first book I pick up when looking for a recipe. I also use the internet a lot and The Ultimate Southern Living Cookbook. I have about another 20 cookbooks I use for different things. I really love The Joy of Cooking and have been tempted to get the newer version but they are kind of spendy.

I have it, but really don't use it enough. I use the Better Homes and Gardens red and white checker board cover one a WHOLE lot more.

I have three of them......one is falling apart and is the one my DH uses all the time. It is the 1962 edition. I also have a 1964 edition and a 1943 edition I picked up at a second hand store.
Great reference books, I think.
I checked out the newest one from the library and I much prefer my older ones.

Mine is a 1978 version that I inherited along with The Fannie Farmer Cookbook when a friend died in 1984. I don't use either one very much but I have found some good baking recipes in them.

Have an older version and like the potatoe pancake receipe that is hard to find--but have given most of my books away as I don't do much cooking now, and do creative cooking--that is if I don't have a ingredigent, I may substitute or just open ref and "blend" together items. Good way to get rid of leftovers.

Sheilajoyce mentioned the pork section changing so much -- I was listening to a radio food/wine show yesterday and the host was talking about how pigs have been bred to be so much leaner than just a couple of decades ago. That's a good reason to get an updated version. He also mentioned a movement to breed back to older lines, more fatty pigs -- kind of like breeding for "Kobe" pork. Interesting that soon we can get good, old fashioned pork, but at twice the price. LOL

I have JoC, 43rd printing, 1987. I think I got it as a wedding or shower gift. I use it primarily for baking recipes and to look up classics. But I mainly use epicurious.com these days, plus a few recipes from here and the recipes forum.

I have two. One from 1953 and one from 1975. The one from 1953 was my mom's and the one from 1975 was given to me by my mom (it was before I inherited hers from 1953).
I use them both on a regular basis.

mariend--we too use the potato pancake recipe from ('75 edition) Joy, every Christmas and Easter. It's one of the few foods dh, 3dd's and I all love!

When I graduated from college and got my first job and first apartment in 1974, I bought a two-book paperback set of Joy of Cooking. I liked it because it was very detailed, giving very specific instructions how to make coffee, for example. I later bought a hard-bound copy at a book sale at church. My favorite recipe is for Chicken Paprika. I make it with rice.

I have an old hardback edition and a newer paperback in two volumes. It's an invaluable resource.

Good for you, Marilyn, getting a vintage one in such good condition.

I have 2 copies of it - a paperback set and an old hardcover. I rarely ever pick it up to look through it but I probably should. My go too cook book was a Good Housekeeping cookbook my sister gave me in the 1970's.

I have one that was a wedding gift from '72. Like matti5, it's my go-to cook book. All sorts of great info in there.
Like Moni, I also use the Betty Crocker-Good Housekeeping cook book. Mine was my Grams. It's now held together with packing tape on the binding. Love that book. It's a treasure. But, I love my Joy of Cooking.

My paperback JOC has lost covers and many front & back (index) pages, so I don't know what edition it is. I've looked over the newer editions (even the older "newer" ones at the book resellers) and they're not the same. I do have the computer 2.0 edition which I reference a lot.I've bought newer editions (hardbound)for DD & DDILs.
Has anyone tried their frozen meals? I see it in 2 stores and it seems kinda pricey.
