have you been to this store in San Francisco?

I'm looking through a file of clippings from old decorating magazines and came across a Met Home issue from '99 that had a little blurb about Bauerware, in the Castro district, selling both whimsical and conventional knobs and handles. Anybody here ever been there? What's it like? (San Francisco is not on my vacation list this year at least--no more vacation time for a while--but I'm curious!)

It's website looks pretty cool.

What a timely thread! I'll look to see if that place is still open, pammyfay.

We'll be in SF in June (following DH on a business trip :)) and I'd *love* any tips on good shops to visit, esp. wrt modern design/vintage-thrift kind of places...

I ive in the PUget Sound area of Washington state and I mostly leave mine in the ground over winter. The 3 big problems that one might encounter are (1)freezing--turns the tuber to mush, no chance of future use (2) rotting in soggy soil...soil must be well drained (3) damage by underground rodents (Hungry mice) and Insects like slugs that will eat emerging growth off them and even down into the tuber, sometimes leading to rot. If you have a pile of tubers from more then a years growth since dividing, often the top ones will freeze but the bottom ones remain intact and growth will come from them. IN your climate, David, they should be fine. You should divide the clump of tubers ever two or 3 years through to keep your plant strong. I dig them in the spring, divide and repot into my greenhouse to speed them up and get some good growth before the soil warms in the garden. You can even take an axe to the clump and simply quarter it and cut off the cut surfaced ones and plant the rest of the quarters into 4 different locations or give them away.I second the idea of covering your plant's space with plastic over the ground.

I don't live in SF but we have really tough inspectors (they measure the distance between the top of the range and the lowest point on the hood PLUS upper cabinets have to be further out than the range - all according to the BS specs). My contractor and I discussed how to meet code. We just tiled a few more rows down behind the range - maybe 8" or so. We used the island trim. No problem passing inspection.

There's Lone Pine Gardens in Sabastopol:). This place is wholesale so call before hand if you go. I think they're open Th-Sat for "regular" people;). This place has a nice cactus garden next to a huge TP. I don't know if you care, but they also have a big selection of Bonsais. They're nice to look at. It's under a two drive from SF. It's in a nice area, pretty drive. I don't know when your coming to the Bay Area, but I believe the San Jose succulent/cactus show is at the end of April.

Not helpful but I had that years ago. Drought tolerant and it isn't a conifer or a wormwood. Bought it because it looks a bit like a water plant, Myriophyllum, and it isn't that either of course. I looked through half the 'Native Sons' nursery list but nothing is jogging my memory.

Cool--we'll be closer than we are when we're back home in the same state :) We'll be visiting some fun mosaic places (e.g. the Institute of Mosaic Art), doing at least one chocolate factory tour (it's for my daughter, not me, I promise :)), and otherwise trying to keep ourselves entertained for 5 days while DH studies his brain out. We have one day together on a Saturday to go to Muir Woods etc., then back home. I'm trying to restrain myself, but SF is a bit of a modern design *heaven*, and I suspect DD will be receiving some advanced homeschooling seminars in Eichler architecture and the multifaceted oeuvre of the Eames :)

If you get a chance you should have lunch at Sam Wo on Washington Street in Chinatown. I discovered it while on a high school field trip in in the 70s. It's a SF institution, and the cold flat noodles are great!

There are shops on Fillmore street. I go there because that's where the Shabby Chic store is but I've noticed other stores as well like Jonathan Adler and Betsey Johnson. Bring lots of quarters for the meter. ;)

We helped DS move there last fall - he's doing post doc research at Berkeley. It was our first time there and we loved it! We're hoping to get back for a visit and some sightseeing before he moves on.

I seem to recall House Beautiful running a recent article on great shops to visit in SF. I'll check to see if I still have the issue.
