Natural Rugs

I'd like to get a natural rug for my bedroom. I live in Florida so between that and the style of my bedroom (which I am still working on, it's pretty bare at the moment LOL!) it's the only type of rug that I think would "fit in". I looked at regular carpet type rugs but haven't found colors or patterns that I like within budget. I think something more plain with natural fibers would look better anyway. I just want to stay away from anything that would shed or that is extremely rough on the feet. I'm not sure if that means sisal, jute, etc.

I don't really know where to look either. I've seen nice natural rugs on the Pottery Barn website but I need a 9x12 rug on a BUDGET and just can't afford $500+ for a rug right now :(

Does anyone have any suggestions? Places to look? Is it possible to find something less expensive for the size I need? I'm not sure if I'm looking in the wrong places or if my budget is unreasonable for such a large rug.

I never purchased a natural rug before so I don't really know about the different types out there or where to be looking.

Nik, what a pretty room. I think a natural rug would be a great addition.

I also live in Florida, have several sisal rugs and love them. They aren't rough on the feet and are holding up very well. I've got 2 from IKEA but they don't sell a size large enough. I did just check another source I've used and found the rug below from overstock.com. It is the size you are looking for and at the price you want. I just bought a sisal rug for my living room and can confirm the shipping is very fast. And, they seem to be having a special; shipping is only $1! The rug I got is just what was advertised, came quickly as noted and is of decent quality.

Might be worth checking for your room too. Good luck.

Yes I have seen a rug on top of that as well in several pictures. That would get rid of the grime element but the room is pretty small, i can get away with an 8'x 8' square. I am not sure that it would make sense to put a small area rug on top of something that small. I did get a rug that is jute chenille mix from pottery barn which is really pretty, the chenille adds texture and softness and so far it is not showing much grime, it is in a lower traffic area and has enough natural variance in color that dog hair is invisible! I am considering that one as well.

Have bought several area rugs, both standard and custom size and very pleased with quality, service, shipping and price. It's an easily navigated site with a huge inventory. Coll, I think the problem you encountered has to do with the properties of jute, not a particular rug. I bought a jute rug for my LR and indeed, it does seem to throw off a lot of debris, especially at first. I have cleaned underneath a couple of times but that's something to be aware of with that particular material. I've also ordered seagrass and sisal from NAR and no problems at all.

That's a funny story, sueb20. I bought a seagrass rug from them two years ago for my DR and am delighted with it. I use metal garden chairs for DR chairs. My grown sons have been home in between jobs in this bad economy, and they frequently had out of work friends over for card games in the DR. Despite all that weight rocking on the chairs, & scooting the chairs in & out from the table, the rug still looks like new -- no fraying or breakage! Hope I'll like the jute rug just as much.

Thank you thank you thank you to everyone who directed me to soumak/polypropylene rugs. I don't know why I didn't even look at recycled polyester and the like. Years ago, these rugs use to look and feel very cheap and so I only purchased silk, wool, or cotton rugs to date. However, I just purchased 4 rugs off the esale rug site, of which I'll keep 1 or 2 (thanks to their seemingly generous return policy - has anyone returned a rug? Is it as easy as they say?) after trying them out with the furniture and seeing which rug colors work the best. And Carol, sorry, I forgot to write that out. GSD is a german shepherd dog. Mine's a 1 year old and absolutely hilarious. Her name is Shadow but she's also an escape artist so we sometimes call her El Chapo (after the escaped drug lord). Here she is:

I just received the diamond jute rug from pottery barn which is new this season and I love the way it looks and feels underfoot. It adds a lot of texture to the room. I have the 8x10 and I believe it was 249.00. Really like it and the quality is good.

Thank you so much for the suggestions! Overstock has A LOT of rugs! Great to know since my bedroom isn't the only area in the house that needs a rug!

My husband and I saw a rug on West Elm's site that we both liked so we *might* get that one, it's a Jute Boucle.

Going to mull it over for awhile and keep looking.

What a pretty room! I too live in Florida and had been searching for that type of rug. I found just what I was looking for at Lowe's of all places. Not a natural fiber though - it is 100% polypropylene. I went with the St. Simon which is a nice natural color with a sage green border. I have the 8'round under the dining table and 8x10 rectangular in the family room. Been in use for a few months and I just love them! So very easy to keep clean! (I have a messy husband and a golden retriever). And they were under $100 each. They also had a beautiful chocolate brown color that was very nice. I may even buy those to use in the winter for a change. Oh, and they feel wonderful under the bare feet!

I'm also planning on using this type of rug in my new home here in Florida. DH and I were in Seaside this past weekend and picked up a seagrass mat for our front door. These were pretty rough on the tender toes but make a great outdoor mat. I just love it. The store had several sizes and runners too.

They also had Jute which was a lot softer to the touch. My only concern is cleaning or vacuuming them. Will they break down and or trap dog hair? I was told you can shake them out to get the sand out but that doesn't sound realistic with an 8x10 size.

Can anyone report on the upkeep of these type of rugs?

Sherwhy, I have sisal rugs in my dining room, my living room and as of last week my foyer. I just got the shipping notice for a seagrass remnant which will go into my main hallway. That should be here within the next few days.

So far so good. The DR rug has been down almost 2 years now, and it looks perfectly fine. My daughter vacuums it weekly and we've had spills that wiped right up. No stains, no trouble.

We have 2 indoor cats who like to use the rugs as scratching pads--again, so far no damage. Fur vacuums right up as well.

I really have been VERY pleasantly surprised at how well the natural rugs have turned out in my home. I was a bit dubious given some of the stories I've heard here and other places, so all of my rugs were definitely bargain purchases just in case. But I've ended up with a style I love and a reasonably durable floor covering to boot! What's not to love? :)

nik211 try HomeGoods. They often have small and large natural fiber rugs at very reasonable prices. My natural fiber rugs have been down over 3 years and are not stained or worn. No pets or kids living here though!
