Question about stained textured concrete coping

It has been raining cats and dogs here for a month. On the occasion that we have a dry day or so, contractors have been attempting to work on our pool. The concrete guys were here on Monday and poured the footing under the lip of the fiberglass pool. On Tuesday morning it was overcast but was not raining. They poured the concrete coping. When I came home for lunch, it was raining and two men were holding a tarp over one man who was putting a powder over the concrete they had just poured and then placing the texture plate over it. When I got home from work at the end of the day, they had placed plastic on top of the coping, and then boards down to hold the plastic down. It was still raining. I went out and noticed that on a few places, the plastic had blown up and across the boards, therefore, there were some places where the coping was exposed to the rain and the rain had washed off the texture and powder. There is a perfect line where the plastic had blown off the coping and was laying across the boards. They came back yesterday and removed the plastic and did the saw cuts. Today, they stained the coping. I like the color. I like the texture. But, the areas where the rain washed away the texture are extremely noticeable, especially since the edges are a straight line where it looks like something at been laid across it. Those spots are stained but are completely flat. Unfortunately, one of them is right at the steps, and the other one is on the deep end of the pool where the stepout is.

My question is, can this be repaired? I paid alot of money for this cantilevered coping and I know the rain was no one's fault, and I guess that since they had poured the coping, they had to go ahead and do the texture on top of the wet concrete.....but.... its very apparent that it shouldn't look that way.

Can they sand down those areas and re-texture and stain?

Your correct that the rain is no ones fault, but the contractor has the opportunity to check the forcast and not pour. In practice sometimes nothing works out. I never poured decks if the forcast was greater than 30% chance of rain. If the rain came I was responsible for the product and have replaced a couple decks because the rain contributed to a poor quailty product.
Your contractor should replace the coping or at least the sections that are bad. It shouldn't be yours to live with. Good luck.

I concur partially. They had no business pouring. Tell the PB you're not paying until it's fixed. Would you accept a new car with only 3 of the 4 tires? Why would you accept this?

If they have to do a complete rip out and redo the deck, it's their fault and their problem, not yours. They made their choice. They consequences are theirs.

I'm struggling with the description of the purpose of the wood (and the fact that English is better than American) - are you intending to put the wood on top (nice)? If so, I'm wondering how you are going to overcome the moisture and temperature differential with an adhesive. That is: in my experience material differences make adhesives a problem. I can't think of what will work here, and you may want to countersink and take the screw down and secure into the block with an adhesive that the trades use. There are several that are excellent, but in my view the key is to countersink the drill hole such that the head and screw lies below the surface. If you must do it, you'll have to do some tests with different adhesives. I use some around the yard that work with like:like material, but unlike materials want to blow out with moisture or cold. I am looking into stained concrete floors in my home as well. I have spent a lot of time looking into them. To answer your question I would say that although it is not what you wanted it is typical. Through my research I have found several companies that used to do the staining, but no longer do because there are soooo many ways for it to be ruined. Even painters tape can ruin a stained concrete floor. It sounds like the problems started early on like maybe the concrete was not prepped correctly. It has to be cleaned a specific way first. I think that may be why some areas didnt stain right. I cant speak for the cracks. Unfortunately, the electrician probably didnt know any better. I have seen pictures of a kitchen that was COMPLETELY ruined when installing the appliances. Do you have any recourse with the builder or the person who stained the floor? I am so sorry to hear this happened to you. Stained concrete floors can be very beautiful. I am thinking that I am going to do whatever it takes for my concrete floor to be the absolute last thing that is done in my new home.

Those tend to be very porous and probably won't take to the acid stain so well. They're made of concrete, but it's not the same mix, these are dryer, therefore more crumbly. Poured concrete (the fake stones, counters, floors, statues, etc) is a different mix so it has a smoother 'shell'. That shell is etched with the acid and the color adheres. I've not tried to acid wash this type of concrete product but, you could try one and see if you like that. To get an idea just try diluting some water based wood stain, brush it on, then let dry. If you like the effect, try acid stain. Or, you can just leave the wood stain and put a clear sealer on it if you want the color to stay. It's easy to reapply later, tho. I'm the wife of a decorative concrete guy...so I get to see all his experiments with concrete coloring. He's been using this new stain that he mixes with the muriatic acid that looks like rust. It's really cool, and I'm considering trying it out on the stone fence I have in the back yard.

Thank you! It was probably an obvious and silly question, but I appreciate you answering. It helps me to gauge a little better the scope (and cost) of the work we're thinking of doing. Since I'm also re-tiling (or maybe going with pavers) the covered patio area between the house and the concrete pool deck, I'm wondering if we're making a mistake by not also paving (and adding coping) to the pool deck. Since the deck has a screened lanai (can't really live without it in central Florida), it seems like it would involve a lot of different people and jobs and add significantly to the cost, but maybe this is the time to get it all done, since I'm already doing pool surface and patio? Thanks again!

I'll take a picture during the daylight tomorrow and post. I guess I am trying to find out if the surface can be repaired in these areas....

We have had no rain for almost 48 hours now... so I think we may be able to deal with the deck pour this week...

I will look forward to comments after you see pictures of my coping. I guess I am hoping that there is an easier fix than tearing the whole thing out. Although I do agree with you that they need to make it right.

I took some pictures of the coping areas in question and have posted them below. Gosh, it took me forever to figure out how to post again... thanks to some instructions I found in an old post.... I finally have it figured out.

Anyway, do you think I am overreacting about this, also, does anyone know if this can be corrected on the surface?

First couple of pictures show the one area that is the worst in my opinion and it is right at the shallow end where the steps are. The last couple of pictures are at the deep end, and although I notice it, it doesn't seem to be as pronounced.

Can you see the little racoon foot prints? I think I had a visitor the other night. Hope he doesn't decide to go swimming anytime soon.... the water looks like a swamp at the moment...

They started forming the deck today (I was at work and my husband had them stop because there have been additional trenches dug by the plumber and by the electricians, and with all of the rain, we want to pool guy to re-grade it. Besides, the paint marks had washed off, and when I came home from lunch, there was one area that was formed incorrectly. I am meeting both the concrete guy and the builder here in the morning to walk back through the deck pour & of course, I will show the builder the coping to see what he says.
