A New Dawn

I'm responsible for coordinating fifty 18" red-and-green applique blocks for a fundraiser. One stitcher used a washable blue marker, so before pressing, I rinsed it in cold water, and let it dry hanging. OMG! A red ruched flower ran, leaving streaks of red on the background. ACK! All the fabrics were washed beforehand, by me, so this was a huge surprise. I tried several things and nothing worked. In a panic, I called my friend, and she suggested rinsing in Dawn dishwashing liquid. Within seconds, the red streaks came out, like magic!

Anyone else ever tried this?

No mine is own root from Heirloom. First summer it grew like a single cane going to about 5 ft straight up because I attached to the wooden trellis that way. Most of the growth you see in photo is this year with many new basal breaks. No pruning, just dead heading. This year I learned that climbers break more laterals if they are trained more horizontal (45 degrees or less) so I just took down all the canes and practically lay them on the ground. It worked and they grew toward the sun with lots of new laterals. It looked kind of messy at times, but when they got really long I attached them to the trellis, on more of a diagonal angle which looks more tidy. Also I think attaching them on the trellis in such a way that the tip is drooping downward also may help lateral and bloom development along the stem (apparently hormones at the flowering tip suppress flowering along the stem).

Thank you Kitty. I read your posts, but dont omment as betwen Houzz and my Kindle, I sound like an idiot. My Awakening has finally awoken in her new home and is finally giving a bit of a show. I also discovered another one that grew from roots left in the soil from when she was transplanted so Ill move that one over to join the other eventually. I love the repetition in that are which if finally starting to take shape. Now I can see what colors and shapes are needed aadditionally.... maybe 4 more Darlows Enigmas among others. Unfortunately its too weedy for pics this flush. I only just cut the grass on that level. New Dawn is aamazing as usual. This rose only improves with age, but requires sun and dead heading for repeat bloom. Fertilizer also helps after the huge 1st flush. I;ll try to add pics from my phone of ND.

Hello there! Your garden and pergola look amazing. I grow raspberry cream twirl rose and it has turn out to be great. It reblooms well, the blooms are large and slightly fragrant. The plant is almost thornless and easy to work with. It is very healthy, I have never seen any rust on it. Our conditions here are very humid all year but no costal influence. I also love the idea of Colette after seeing Diane’s, but zone is everything. The color on raspberry is definitely a lot darker than the other climbers discussed. These are two own root plants that are 3 years old. The new growth is dark red and doesn’t lose her leaves in zone 7b. It reblooms until hard freeze as long as it gets decent dedheading. The only problem I have with this rose is that it doesn’t shed the old blooms. So if not removed you will have ugly dead blooms for a while. Also I am sure the stripped bicolor blooms may not be everyone’s cup of tea. Spring 2019

I live in the greater Toronto area and my zone is also 5b according to Canadian ranking. Eden is not cane hardy in my garden and I lost her two years ago. However ND is but not a monster yet. I do have a few canes and I am currently training it against the wall. I use a tall tomato cage but I am also fortunate that the main canes are sturdy and self supporting. The thinner canes I use bamboo stakes for now but if needed I can attach to the wooded fence.

I don't have it with me to read the bottle. I pulled it right from the kitchen, just BLUE Dawn dishwashing liquid in a squeeze bottle. No bleach, no oxi, just plain Dawn.

I bought one last night at Hancock's Fabrics ($4.99). I think it's called a dyegrabber, but I'll check when I get home. You throw it in the wash with an item you think might run. The lady that demoed it last night said you could use it for up to 10 washes. The good thing is that once it has absorbed the dye it won't release it on the next wash.

BTW Dawn also removes smoke. When the cleaners were packing up our stuff that could be saved, they wouldn't touch the jewelry. One of the ladies handed it to me and said to wash it with Dawn. I did the costume jewelery and it removed the smell from most. Not the plastic though. I did take about 6/7 good pieces to the jewelers to be cleaned.

Thanks for the tip. I've accidently discovered that Dawn is good for many cleaning jobs --not just dishes. It's good for cleaning bathtubs and less expensive than speciality cleaners.

Good to know about removing smoke, too!
I've read that Dawn is good for removing the oil of poison ivy. When I've been gardening, that's what I shower with, and wash my clothing in.
On their web site it says "Dawn is the product of choice for major rehabilitation organizations to clean oil off birds injured in oil spills."

When I took the fabric dying class, the instructor said she uses Dawn to rinse out residual dye until the water is clear. So I got some of the "original" formula (could only find it at Wally World) and some of the newer "flavors."

I have not noticed a difference, but then, my test was not totally scientific -- no side by side comparisons or control samples. You might remember how annoyingly detail oriented my tests can be sometimes.
