Jandy vs. Pentair

Hi, does anyone recommend Jandy over Pentair (or vice versa) when it comes to a pump/filter installation?

We're forgoing the heater (we live in Southern California and have never used the pre-existing heater than came with the house/existing pool).

Any replies are greatly appreciated!

On a previous pool, had Jacuzzi(really sucked) and switched
to Pentair which was a vast improvement.One HP Pentair
pump had stronger flow,way quiter,used less electricity,
and was trouble free.The 2HP Jaacuzzi was loud,develop
a leaking porous casing,electric hog.
IMHO Pentair is best.
Don`t know about Jandy.Had no expirence with them.

On my brand new pool,Stayrite equipment was installed.
They are owned by Pentair,so I agreed to use them(instead
of insisting on P).Really happy with them too.

We finished our new pool July 06, and have all Jandy equipment. Two Pumps, 60 DE filter, LX Heater, SWCG, and automation. We have had no problems to date and all the equipment came with a 5 year complete replacement warranty. Initially, we had a bad board in the SWCG, but they came out and replaced the entire unit and we have not had any further issues.

PGE said that anything +/- 10% of 240 is considered normal, so even 263 is technically within normal range of operation. My electrician agrees with PGE completely. My pool company again talked to Pentair and they said the pump must operate within +/- 10% of 230V. This does put a voltage of 263 technically out of range for the pump, but so far I have yet to see the voltage spike that high. It remains around 250, and today my PGE meter showed the voltage as 246. I tested again and the pump only runs for a few seconds before shutting down. I flipped the breaker off for about 2 minutes, then disconnected the RS-485 cable and put the aqualink in service mode. Then I tried starting the pump and it ran for a full 60 seconds before shutting down. I reproduced this several times, all the while my utility voltage was holding steady at 246-247 volts. The mystery continues. Thanks for the advice on keeping the pool limping along without filtration - I might need to do that.

The Eco-Star is a relatively new model so it's MTBF period is a big question mark. Past experience with Hayward brand products is not the greatest but they usually fix the product in a reasonable amount of time, for a manufacturer that is. Your description of the existing automation is quite accurate. Calling it antique hits the nail on the head. It hasn't been made for years and thus, no one would even think to do any developmental work on it or for it. What needs to be determined for the use of the Intelliflo or a two speed pump is the number of open and available relays and/or valve actuator ports. The two speed pump can be of any of the major manufacturers as they, by and large, use the same technologies and that has been available for a long time. There is a high speed coil and a low speed coil. Each gets it's own set of connections. Only one is turned on at a time. I am pretty sure your system can operate a two speed but not 100% positive. If I had the time, I would go looking for the most recent docs to find out. If it has either/and/or a free relays and valve actuator ports, each available one can represent a speed to the Intelliflo pump. The Intellicom II, used to interface between the pump and the automation system, can talk to both types of interfaces though the physical connection sometimes requires the tech be astute, electronically speaking as well as electrically. IMHO, Leslie's not sending someone is problematic. They have no idea if your existing gear can accommodate where you want to be. Add that you have no idea either and you have a blind leading the blind situation. Can the Intelliflo's internal timers be used to ramp up/down at specific times? Absolutely. If using the spa, would you need to manually change the speed on the pump? Yes you would. You would need to connect the power going to the relay that normally sends power to your pump directly to the pump for the timer to work properly. The pump's timer can have up to 8 events. A ramp up would be one even. Ramping back down would be a second event. If the caveats I have mentioned are ones you are willing to live with, you should be OK. If not, then expect to need to buy and install a new automation controller. That will cost you though. Scott

Are you referring to cracking vs warping? It seems the only caps I replace on a regular basis dud to pumps running dry are the Jandy valve caps. To the tune of about 40-50 a year. I can't ever recall replacing a cap on a ComPool valve. However, seal leakage on the suction diverters for elevated spas seem to fail more on ComPools. I think for the few bucks difference, they have about the same field failure rates. Also, you don't get the handle stop snapping off on a ComPool that you get on Jandy's when owners turn them too far and too hard. Sound like a ticky tacky complaint but it's huge when they don't get suction valves turned to the full stop position. The ComPool valve has the pins which never fail due to their design.

Have had the entire jandy package installed for 7 years now. Mostly been very reliable with exception on the chlorine generator. Numerous sensor failures and jandy (zodiac now) wouldn't even acknowledge an issue let alone replace defective parts. 6 years= 2 complete aquapure 1400 systems + 2 additional sensors! Not sure if other companies are any better but jandy didn't seem to be doing anything to generate customer loyality. Heater and other equipment has been very good. Might consider using the new iPad software/controller as very convenient

Pentair is excellent but Jandy should be considered the top of the line. When you look at the technology behind the heaters, etc, Jandy is in a field of their own. They cost more but are worth it. The soon to be available LXi is a beautiful unit that in my opinion offers way more is service ability than the Master Temp or Max E Therm (PENTAIR) I see nothing of value in anything StaRite.

Pumps should go to Pentair as they are very reliable and they own the IntelliFlo.

In terms of automation, the Pentair IntelliTouch is awesome but a bit overwhelming to most newbies. The Jandy stuff is excellent and very user friendly.

Salt is a pretty even thing also. The Jandy Aqua Pure is a nice product that is very friendly on installation and the Pentair IntelliChlor is also a good unit.

My deciding factor would be technical support AND field service. Jandy is the absolute best, at least in our area of so cal.

Thanks so much to everyone who replied thus far!

The guy will offer the same price on Jandy as he will on Pentair. We're not going with the heater.

We're going with a 1.5 hp pump and a 60 sq. ft. filter.

As "repair guy" mentioned, I would also suggest the IntelliFlo or the IntelliPro pump . The 1.5hp filtration pump will soon not be allowed on pools come 2008 due to power draw. Also, the power companies offer a rebate (believe $200) on the cost of either "rare earth" magnet pump above. Go to Pentairs website, and talk with your PB and see if it is right for you.

Concerning the Jandy pump, I would make sure the PB is using at least the minimum pipe size that is recommend by Jandy (on jandy website). Based on the model of Jandy pump, they will be louder than the medium head "whisper-flo" pump if they are not given enough water.

I highly recommend the IntelliFlo pump. If you go with the IntelliFlo pump, do yourself a favor and go with the IntelliTouch system. It offers full integration and control of the IntelliFlo pump. Imagine sitting in your spa and ramping up or down the spa jet speed, or waterfall flow rate, etc...

Pump and filter-wise, I prefer Pentair. I have seen/had customers with Jandy equipment that develop leaks, get loud, electrical problems, etc. that I have not had with Pentair stuff.

I'm sorry pool guy NJ but I don't by this at all.

I've replaced more PS1000 seals and motors on Whisperflo and Challenger pumps than I ever have on the Jandy pumps.
I'm not saying Jandy's better it's just my preferred equipment.

IMO, any equipment from any of the fab four((Pentair,Jandy,StaRite,orHayward) is well engineered and well constructed product. The after the sale warranty support is what makes Jandy my choice.

I do like the 4x160 with the EZ Touch8 controller a bunch, I just have a problem with the extra coin compared to the 2speed Jandy with a Aqualink PDA. I just had to add salt to a recent pool with this combo. I had to spin the pump over 1000 rpm to get the flow to register on the IC40 salt water chlorinator. Where's the savings?
Leia, either would be a good choice and if he'll give you the 4x160 at the same price as the Jandy, JUMP ON IT!!!
IMO the fitters are equal.

Thanks, everyone, for the replies! I ran into a paver color issue and have been focusing on that for the last several days (insert rolling eyes emoticon here).

We don't have a spa in our current pool and don't intend to have one built in with the remodel. Is the remote thingy mentioned above still pertinent with an old school pool that's been remodeled - but is spa-less :-( ?
