I will preface this by saying this is only my opinion, so take it for what it's worth.

Brown painted wood makes me cringe. Why not just pick a dark stain on a lovely piece of wood and let the grain show through? There is a reason we don't see much wood painted brown, I think.

My sister in law painted her island a very very dark brown it looks almost black its like a java color and it looks incredible! Her house was featured on a local house tour and of all the 6 or 7 houses and all the many rooms toured her kitchen was voted as the favorite room. She had cream cabinets and the very dark island a a white marble. It looks really beautifuil. Or you can do go with a dark stain but you will see graining..she didnt want to see that. I think decopad has a lot of examples of that.

We did a facelift and painted the island medium brown and I've been very happy with it. Picks up the colors in the marble -- irl it's a greenish-dark brown that looks almost gray at times of the day and blends really well with stainless if that's an issue. It's Farrow & Ball Dauphin in Eggshell finish. Our floors are white oak and ambered over time, which gives them a reddish cast. That goes well with the Dauphin.

With White Dove I'd take a look at Ben Moore Bittersweet Chocolate. That's a deep brown that was used to redo an entire kitchen on her several years back. Forget the poster's name -- perhaps someone remembers. It was a kitchen outside Chicago and she went with an aqua backsplash. BC looks terrific on cabinets.

I actually prefer painted to the wood on many cabinets I see but, of course, it always personal preference and depends on the cabinets. I like painted furniture, too.
