Decisions, Decisions!

First off, thank you for all your helpful comments (ideagirl, thank you!) to my earlier posting:

While it is a kitchen re-location and remodeling, it impacts the entire house. While I was a bit late in getting your input towards the kitchen itself, I realize that there are a number of significant decisions that I have to make as a result of the domino effect from moving the kitchen.

Here is our situation. The home main entrance is to a great (formal living?) room that is 29ft x 25ft of which the current kitchen occupies 8ft x 11ft space.

As part of the kitchen remodeling, we decided to move the kitchen to the adjoining room, which is 14.5ft x 21.5ft. This is the room that we previously used as a dining room.

The new kitchen area is separated from what was previously a family room by a partial wall. The family room is also 14.5ft x 21.5ft.

Now for your thoughts and ideas. We are trying to decide where whether we should move our dining area to where the current kitchen is, sharing the space with the great room?

OR,

Make the previous family room area the dining area, next to the new kitchen.

This leaves the main room (29 x 25 ft) wide open and can be a great entertaining area.

Please send us your thoughts and ideas.

Our kitchen is very similar to your new one - it is 13ish X 22. We have a large island with close seating for 4. The island granite with the overhang is 3'10" by 7'10". We have good sized aisles on three sides of the island. On the breakfast area side, the aisle is tight. We have a long skinny fam table that seats 6, 7 in a pinch, It sits at right angles to the end of the island, between the kitchen and the family room door. This arrangement is a little awkward, because you have to "walk around" the end of the table a little - the family room door is not centered in the wall betw FR and KT so it works for us.

That is a long winded way of saying I would put dining area in the great room. That is a HUGE room, adn depending on your family you could have a big long table for holiday dinners. Your kitchen will have plenty of space for casual eating - with that huge FR, I would put in an island for casual meals in the kitchen and a small cozy eating area in the opposite end.

Another thought would be to knock down the wall between the non-cooking end of the kitchen space and the FR (I'm presuming there is some sort of wall). That would allow you more flexibility about size of a table and orientation of the table, as well as placement of other dining furniture.

I hear what you are saying about entertaining, but how often to you entertain a mob of people and NOT need to serve them some sort of food? I think incorporating dining seating into that big room will help with both the decorating and the utility of the room.

Large spaces ca be harder to manage than small ones, sometimes.

Tropic brown, tan brown are two others. There are very dark golds like Juparana Tobacco or Paradiso which might work. You might also consider something like teak wood. Etching leaves white marks. On a brown marble it will be very visible. For fun, I got a two buck pink marble tile from the box store and had "science" when I was trying to decide about counters. Science consisted of pouring a small qty of lemon-lime soda on a bit of the marble and seeing if I could get it off before it etched. The answer was NO! I would suggest you spend a couple bucks to get a tile similar to what you want to use and have your own science project.

These are the fixtures I've gotten from HD: GE Premium Fluorescent Light Fixture - only about $15, Direct Wire, Thinnest (1 1/4"), can NOT be linked, uses T5 bulbs, 18" long. BTW, I can't find any wiring or connector in the kit. Would I have to buy sth else? Xenon Premium 3 light fixture - about $49, Linkable, Plug-in connector, 2 light levels, 18" long. Considering the cost factor, the GE one is definitely better. I'm not sure if direct wiring or non-linkable would become problems when the electrician puts them in. I only need three sets so turning them on separately would be ok. Ngng, thanks very much for the pictures. I like the look and feel. I'm still surprised that fluorescent lighting can produce the warm color though, since my ceiling fluorescent is not that yellow at all. Is yours GE? I see the wiring in your picture goes on the outside of the cabinet. Looks like your rails hide the lights very well. I wonder if other electricians may drill a whole on the bottom of the cabinet and pull wiring inside. I forgot to take a look at the bottom of the new cabinets and see if the rails are tall enough to conceal the lights. Maybe that's the standard these days? If my cabinets are 33" wide, what length should I use for the undercabinet lights?

The look is somewhat like this mini house from an online magazine, except there are 2 boxes at a T. This house in the photo is probably 40 ft. Mine will be a 20 foot box and a 32 foot box. The house hasn't been built yet, so I can't provide an exact photo, and I don't know if my builder has ever even built a T.
