Marking pen discovery

Maybe I'm the last to know. But, I bought this pen at a quilt show last weekend and she told me it erases with an iron. Boy, is she right. It's wonderful. You just touch it with heat and all the marks are gone. It writes a dark line like a regular pen and is easy to see. It retracts like a regular ball point.

I'm unlikely to want to buy a dozen but I'll sure keep my eyes open for more at a stationery store. Mine is blue so I haven't tested black.

I have been using them for about a year.. I use the purple and black, also have pink.
I like them but you should be aware the marks may return lightly for a while if they are exposed to cold. I tested them before I used them. But marks will be removed with heat even then. I have mentioned this to the people I have give the quilts to and suggested washing in warm water rather then cold.
Another used is writing in books and cards. When you are finished just remove with the iron. I have a yellow one I use to highlight.

I've been using Crayola washable markers now since I saw that hint on this forum about a year ago. They do in fact wash out, and if left on a quilt in progress long enough, they just fade out without washing. I think I paid less than two dollars for a whole assortment of them at Staples.

There are basically three types of primers: oil based, water based and shellac based. As Talley Sue is saying if the primer you bought already states that it is "shellac based" then you can use it, otherwise you would need to exchange the oil or water based primer for a "shellac based" primer. The different manufacturers often make all three so you can't just buy any Kilz primer, only the shellac based primer. I have found that semi-gloss doesn't give as good a coverage as flat. They may find it better to apply one or two coats of flat and have the semi-gloss simply as a top coat to facilitate cleaning in the future. Personally I don't like the look of semi-gloss either because it is too shiny.

Worst case presumption on my part? If the water soluble ink was absorbed into the body of the tile through a cut edge, it will not come through the glaze on the face of the tile. However, and this is remote, it could possibly wick back out and into the grout after the tile is grouted. Again, remote. If it's a concern, prior to grouting I'd consider dipping a Q-tip in bleach and dab it on each faded red mark. Give it 24 hours, then grout. Bill, you think residual bleach would be a problem with the grout? I thin not, but you're the tile man. But yup, china markers or grease pencils are the way to go.

I just cleaned an ink mark off my white leather easy chair, using Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. I couldn't believe how easy it was. I have usually had luck cleaning leather handbags using Bon Ami cleanser and sponge, but it didn't work on the ink.

Pen is an ink so consider it to be a stain that will bleed through latex paints and primers. You can either try to remove the pen marks or use a stain killing primer like Kilz or Bin and then touch up. Either way, you will likely need to touch up. I would probably use lacquer thinner to get the pen marks off and then touch up (easier than actually using the stain killing primer). I'm sure you don't have lacquer thinner on hand, so try some rubbing alcohol, Goo Gone, Soft Scrub with Bleach, hairspray, toothpaste, magic eraser, etc...so many things here that people have claimed to have worked. And then touch up.

I scanned the web for more news on these marking pens. I'm very suspicious of marking pens, so I'm biased against all them--they are out to get me, you see. I wanted to share a cautionary post, and warn all of you to test, test, test.

If you read on through the comments, a couple of responders said the ghost marks disappeared after a day, and another lady said she washed her quilt in Synthrapol and scrubbed the marked with a toothbrush and the gel washed out and didn't come back in by freezing.

Scrubbed out with a toothbrush....that's good, but not the easy miracle I hoped for!
