Ms. Indecisive made a decision! Please help with final decision!

I actually made a decision! I have opted to go with a 20x40 vinyl pool with a blue granite liner and matching blue granite thermoplastic steps.

Big decision and begging for advice: Pool depth!!!

We like to play volleyball and wondering if 3 6 to 6 on the deep end will work for volleyball. Our kids are 14 11 and 7. Had a family meeting tonight regarding the pool and how the kids think they will use it. Two say volleyball/shallower pool, the 14 year old says deep end. If we do an 8 foot deep end, I assume volleyball is out of pic. If we do 6 foot deep, will have a slide and possibly volleyball. (looking for advice if vb works with that slope)

I do worry that if the deep end is only 6 feet some kids might still dive in and wondering if 8 feet is best!

Driving myself crazy with indecision! Must decide asap as they want to start digging!

Please advise!

We built our 8 ft. deep end pool 2 years ago, have 3 boys -13, 11, and 8 - and here's what I've found.

Boys - my boys, their friends, their cousins, my husband, etc. - love to dive, flip, and do other tricks that can stop my heart!

Girls, on the other hand, like to splash in the shallow end, giggle and try not to get their hair wet!

Both boys and girls enjoy playing Sharks and Minnows and Stars in the deep end. And I'm glad we have a fairly sizable shallow end - it allows the kids to play basketball - we have a floating, blow-up hoop, that I think we bought in a dollar store. The kids have also created a game with dive sticks that they really seem to enjoy.

For us, having a deep end was never not an option - it really does give us peace of mind. Just my $.02...

Good luck with your build. It's an exciting time, albeit a little stressful.

I think some fo the guys I hung out with when I was young would have tried diving into a 4' pool (in fact they did try into those old galvanized "tub" pools, which was what 3' in depth.

So while a volleyball court would be fun, I believe teenage boys will be diving regardless of what rules you lay out. Every kid is different, so it comes down to a risk management decision: shallow pool with large play area having more safety risk, or less play area less risk of the stupidity that comes from "boys will be boys" logic.

Actually, if I think back to my teen years, dim & dark tho' they may be, I believe us boys were even more inclined to do stupid things if a couple of cute girls were around.

Wolf I believe makes their own hood in WI and buys blowers from Broan/Best. They use 16 guage 304 SS vs thicker 14 gauge SS in MA. MA uses arguably best external blowers in Abbaka. Their inline blowers are kinda loud. I think their internal blowers are from Best/Broan.MA made in Southern CA. MA has better design baffles for bigger area and smooth edges for lower noise. For the same money I would get MA. Wolf customer service is nice and all else being equal I would buy Wolf but they are far from equal in this case. The Best hood says they use 304SS OR EQUIVALENT. They don't guarantee 304 or 300 series SS. They don't specify gauge thickness. They don't say where hoods are made. The hood linked uses 4 speed blower vs infinate variable speed in Wolf and MA. I don't like Best waffling on specifications. I would cross them off my list for that reason alone.

Hi again. After taking some time to think about some thing (and recuperating from the flu!), I made a few decisions. but my architect strongly recommended putting the clean-up sink on the island because it "fosters social interaction with friends and family . . . especially teens For the most part, I agree with this. However, I've decided to keep the clean-up at the window and keeping a prep in the island. One reason...I realized that almost everytime someone comes over, I am standing at the sink doing dishes. Whether it's another mom or a family member, they are sitting on a stool and I am washing dishes. I am very tired of that and I imagine it doesn't make them feel very welcome. Another reason...when I am doing dishes and the kids are sitting there for homework, either I am not giving them my undivided attention, or I get sidetracked and the dishes don't get finished. Also, since the kid's pretty much clean the kitchen after dinner, having their backs to the great room would certainly keep them focused on their task. Is that wishful thinking? Finally...we all like to prep together and that will be more fun if we can all be around the island. And I love the idea of using the island prep sink for drinks at parties. I'm guessing you are not a baker Actually, we are avid bakers. I like the idea of the MW and ovens separate so that while one might be using the MW another can be removing things out of the oven. I don't see a problem with meandering teens with the wide aisles. Yes, the DW needs to stay on the cooktop side since that doorway leads to the pantry. It also leads to a guest suite which will probably be occupied by my mother. However, thanks, to Rhome, I am seriously considering putting a second DW in the island. The handyman will be back the first week in March to pour footings where the load bearing walls are coming down. After that we order the 20 foot headers! Thanks so much for your input. It really helped me put things into perspective. Now I need to decide if that buffet counter is going to be nothing more than a clutter magnet!

GreenAcresAli...It depends on how open your breakfast area is and what might be across from the table, or hem it in. In other words, it would help to see your layout. In the dining room in our last house, we did well with placing the table 30" from the window wall...That's close to Marcolo's measurement. If you did that, and if the room is open to a decent aisle, you have plenty of room for a table. If, however, at the edge of 7 ft is a wall or cabinetry, you will be pretty tight. One option would be to build in a bench on one wall, so there is no space behind the seating, which then allows the table to be more like 24" from the wall to give you a bit more room. There may be other options. How many do you want to seat? Newbie, I'm not a particular fan of the spindly legs, but that's personal style and otherwise, I like the table. I do agree with LL, that even without the banquette, that pedestal tables make for easier/more comfortable seating, especially if the space is tight. As I said above, we had 30" behind our table in our previous house, and thought it worked great, but we served and bussed from the front side, mostly, which had a wider aisle and a large doorway. 30" on both sides may be tight to move around once everyone is seated. The room around it partly depends on chair style and size, too.

thanks, mathteachr, I thought about doing that....I also considered putting the sink in the island, which would solve this issue. What does GW think about sinks in islands? It would obviously make seating harder. I would probably have to do a second level of countertop for seating, away from the sink, right? We would also have to run plumbing into the island, which I know isn't THAT costly (we're over a crawl space) but we're renovating our whole house so even a grand makes a big difference...

Glad you made the decision! I agree with Laurie! Boys will be boys and children will be children. Safe to have 8 feet! I do enjoy it occasionally also.

I had the same dilemma. All it took was to see our neightbor's teen boy jump off their diving board with a girl on his shoulders (parents on vacation, much?) and my decision was made: Deeeeeeeep enddddddddd!

I agree with lbridges that boys are more inclined to do stupid things if cute girls are around.

Disclaimer: *MY* soon-to-be teen boy will not be stupid. (If I repeat that 100 times will it be so?)

Of course it will (see below for disclaimer).

I have four kids, three of them boys, and the baby boy is 22 and a senior at the Univ of Florida. So I speak from experience.

Promised Disclaimer: Length of time for avoiding stupid actions may vary slightly with age, but shows a high correlation with the quantity of similarly aged onlookers. Studies show their ability to hold back stupidity will, for average mid-teen boys, last approximately 3/4 of a second. For "good boys who listen to their mother", the time has been seen to rise to almost a full second in some rare cases. Unless a REALLY cute girl is there to witness. In which case, and for every boy studied thus far, the retention time falls to such a short interval scientists aren't able to accurately measure the value.

I agree that you will have more peace of mind going with an 8' depth. We have a 6' and still find it difficult to play volleyball. We actually use 3 1/2' to 5' range when playing volleyball, and although we have only had a pool completed about one month, I can see where an 8' pool would have been the better choice (DH has already exhibited his diving skills). So I guess boys will be boys even when they are men! LOL!!
