Kohler Stages sink... will it fit in 33' base cabinet?

I'm suffering from TKO stress.... we committed to our kitchen cabinet design rather quickly, before we had looked into sinks, etc.

I just read someone mention the Kohler stages sink earlier today, and showed my husband the cook the video (as he was preparing dinner!) He loves it.

But! It's a 33-inch sink, right? (We are in a 10x10 kitchen, and definitely don't have room for the 45 inch.) Is it going to fit into the 33 inch base cabinet that we ordered?

I know I can call my KD in the morning to ask, but you know how it is.... I may have bad dreams tonight with the not knowing.

To see if a Ticor undermount stainless sink would fit, I just called the sink manufacturer and he said to add about 2 1/2" to the sink width to allow for mounting clips while the sink is being set into the granite. So a 15" sink requires 17 1/2" of clearance inside the cabinet - or an 18" cabinet. We are ordering a 30" sink for our 33" base cabinet. I would think a 33" sink would require a 36" base. Good luck - I can sympathise from your tko stress - so many details to work through!

Bummer. I'm hoping I can find a solution that fits, though. The stages sink with the wet prep area and the knife holder tray that sits right in the top of the sink opening is really cool.

We are constantly leaving knives right next to the sink, rather than putting them in the dishwasher right away, in case we want to give them a quick rinse and use them again.

Hi, I got your email with this question. (You were right that I haven't checked here in a long time.) I thought that I would give you my answer in the forum. Here are the measurements that you wanted: The depth of the main sink is about 9 1/4" plus about 1.5 inches of soapstone countertop. I think that it's plenty deep. The measurement of the internal part of the sink from front to back is 15.75" and the width (not including the 12" shelf) is 19.5". That 15.75" is the actual internal measurement as some space is taken by the ledge that holds the cutting boards. Although I use my Stages solely as a prep sink, I don't see any reason why you couldn't use it as your main sink. The shelf could hold either dirty dishes or dishes waiting to be rinsed. The only issue is the cutting boards. I don't use the plastic ones much but I do keep the mahogany board in the sink most of the time. It is big and heavy and you'll have to figure out a place to put it when you're doing dishes. But if you can find a solution for that I think that you'll be fine. Hope that helps.

It looks like the actual sink part of the sink is 19" wide, which is 2" smaller than the sink I have now. I really like the sink I have now- it's a single bowl and much more useful than the double bowl sink I used to have. However I think that what I have now is about the smallest I would be comfortable with for cleaning purposes. The Kohler is a LOT deeper than my current sink, but I think the small bowl size would be an issue cleaning. I'd rather have the whole sink be a bowl and just prep on the counter like I do now.

Yes, when I say it started with the sink, I did mean it quite literally. The first thing that bothered me about our kitchen when we moved in was the sink. But if you replace the sink, you really need to replace the counters and the faucet, and it would be a good time to replace the dishwasher. If you are going to replace the counters, then you might as well think about making any other changes... which lead to moving the range and adding a cabinet, and so it goes. I think the other thing about a sink is that it's something that you use all the time. Constantly. It seems like everything in a kitchen revolves around the sink. And that's probably why if you have room, two sinks are a good idea. But I will be happy just to get this one large sink installed. And I hope by starting with it, everything else will fall into place.

The Whitehaven "apron" front of the sink goes over the frame of the cabinet instead of the cabinet needing to be cut to the exact size of the sink. This makes it easier to get a good looking fit. The "short apron" style is often used in remodels that are keeping the cabinets because the apron is shorter and goes over the frame left when the upper faux drawer front of the cabinet is removed. The sink has to be the size for the base or it will not adequately cover the frame.This is what I used in my remodel. The Whitehaven also has a divided bowl style, but it is not a 50/50 divide. A more traditional farmhouse sink like this Rohl fireclay sink has sides all around. The cabinet has to be more carefully cut to look good. Go see the PDF on the Kohler site, and see if the sink walls are farther apart than the walls of your cabinet. Then, you'll know if you can make it fit without leaving space for brackets. You place it onto the cabinet sides and you build up the other sides by adding a strip to make the same level. No big deal.
