New homes being destroyed in California

I don't think the worst of the economic slump has hit - yet. In Victorville, CA, about 20 brand new homes - never occupied - were destroyed. Seems the bank-owned properties were hit with fines from the city because they were empty and deteriorating. So rather than drop the price, these 2,000+ square foot NEW homes were leveled.

Many good reasons to do this.

Empty houses are ripe for squatters, with no water and sewer service, ripe for unsanitary "debris" that can breed germy consequences.

The land is worth more without structures.

And, selling those houses at a loss...to who? They probably need more work, and giving them away is no gift to someone who can't afford to maintain them with the property taxes, utilities, etc.

The bank needs to sell the properties...land is easier to sell without structures. Hopefully, a new buyer will build affordable houses, instead of what was there before.

I know they must for reason mentioned above. But, because I always am thinking outside the box, isn't it ironic that we have so much here in America that we can destroy homes whereas in some 3rd world countries some three and four families live together in a house out of cardboard. Yet, we always complain here of how much we don't have?

Hi, Jenn I garden in Mississippi. At least here, it's too early for hornworms. They usually show up in June or July. No doubt you had them last year, but this year? I'm not so sure. I agree with sunnibel. I think you have more than one pest at work. If the holes in your leaves are small and round like heads of a pin or slightly larger that sounds like flea beetles. Did you, by any chance grow cabbage family plants in this spot last winter? If so, that's a very likely culprit. You will never see them, only their damage. The best way to lick them is to rotate your crops religiously. Never follow tomatoes, peppers, or eggplants with brassicas, and vice versa. For now, if you can live with some chemicals, you could spray. (Look for the mildest thing possible. Your County Ag Extension agent is a good source of information.) I agree with sunnibel that it sounds like you are overdoing the fertilizer. The best way to know is to get a soil test: also available through your Ag Extension office. It will give you a computerized readout that tells you exactly what your plants need to thrive. It will relieve your mind enormously. :) Here's a couple of thoughts. There will always be a certain amount of insect damage on your plants. But you will find that in small amounts, it really does no harm. Experience will help you figure it out. Don't give up. The flowers that are drying up? It's possible that they have been pollinated and are getting ready to set fruit. They do dry up and disappear at that point, you know. Leave them alone and see what happens in a week or so. If it appears to be disaster take a sample of them with you when you take in your soil test. As to your onions and things that have been chewed, it certainly sounds like rabbits....or possibly deer. Ask your neighbors if they see such critters about and have experienced plant damage. Check on your garden throughout the day (week-ends is better than nothing.) If it's rabbits, you'll see them coming and going if your keep a sharp eye out from a distance. If it's rabbits, the floating row covers can be a lifesaver. If it's deer, build a fence, or lacking that, I use the Scarecrow sprinkler system and if you keep its batteries fresh, it absolutely does work. I actually saw them at Walmart yesterday for the first time. Don't give up! You will figure this out with time and it will be worth it. We promise!

You're correct, Dan, I forgot they trapped some infected psyllids, which led them to the infected pummelo graft. And yes, the testing for trees allows an infected tree to stay in production much too long, allowing psyllids to spread the disease for a significant amount of time prior to finding an infected tree, and removing it. Damage is long done. This was part of Florida's issues in attempting to control the spread of HLB. Newer, swifter tests are being developed that have a high degree of accuracy, but of course, they are more expensive. And there are not nearly enough traps out there, or manpower available to manage the amount of traps we need in urban areas, to monitor the psyllid population. In listening to Dr. Allan Dodds, Professor Emeritus from UCR (whose graduate students, such as Dr. Erik Mirkov at Texas A&M) are leading the research in the fight agains HLB said that HLB will start in someone's back yard. Since about 70-90% of homes in S. California have at least 1 citrus tree, it is simply logistically impossible to monitor all the backyard citrus. One of the comments Dr. Dodds shared with us at our CRFG meeting, was the possibility of requiring the removal of ALL backyard citrus, if HLB is found in the state (as in spreading - not an isolated case as found in Hacienda Heights). That produced a rather loud collective gasp in our packed meeting. Considering many of our members, such as myself, have more than 50 trees (in my case, over 100) on our properties, that was simply an unacceptable solution, in order to protect our commercial citrus industry. And Dr. Dodds also proposed to us, that HLB very well may be here, but due to the situations you've mentioned - not enough monitoring capabilities - we may not discover it until it has really taken hold somewhere. So, California commercial growers are being much more preemptive, than the commercial growers were in Florida. Trying to learn from the disaster in Florida - they are treating their trees well, completely and thoroughly. They have been for several years, now. Much prior to HLB being identified here in our state in the hopes they can keep HLB out of our commercial citrus orchards. Hoping that they can stave off massive infection prior to successful treatments being made available. There are no "useful treatments" in Florida for HLB. Commercial growers are simply replanting every 5 years, a ridiculous and costly option. Some growers are attempting to flood their orchards with nutrients to make their trees as healthy and vigorous as possible, which really only slows the inevitable. But, might buy a grower another year of production, thus lowering their overhead. A few have tried super heating their trees, but that treatment is simply not practical in the large sense. It's much, much too late to remove trees - Florida became overwhelmed before this could have ever have been considered an option. They got caught with their pants down around their ankles, sadly. And, they are paying an indescribable cost for their lack of vigilance and concern. California will not be caught off guard, but for now, there is nothing much we can do, except treat all our trees on a regular basis, and hope for a cure, soon. Otherwise, our alternative may be horrific - the prophylactic removal of all backyard citrus trees. Patty S. Snidely, I also repeat what I think is credible, like you do. I get my information from trusted sources and use them to make my comments. Below are some examples of my statements along with their credible sources such as WHO, the CDC, the FDA, Cancer.org and the Mayo Clinic. For example, when I say, "Countries have pulled it from their recommended vaccines because of the side effects." it's because Japan pulled their recommendation for it because of side effects in 2013. Japan Times Article When I say, "There is concern if you have already been exposed to hpv, getting the vaccine actually increases your chances of cervical cancer." According to the VRBPAC, it's true. FDA Document Bottom of page 13. When I say, "I guess the difference to me is that meningitis is a very serious, often deadly and contagious disease, so the potential risk/reward analysis errs on the side of risking the vaccine. The HPV vaccine, not so much" is because meningitis is considered an urgent condition, can be deadly, and can be contagious (Mayo Clinic Source). HPV is not considered an urgent condition, and is very rarely deadly with proper screening and treatment. CDC When I say, "Pretty much everyone gets HPV at some point" it's because it's true. CDC Statistics When I say, "only very rarely does it turn into something more serious, and if you keep on top of your paps there's an extremely low chance of ever developing cervical cancer in nations where routine paps are common" because it's true according to the CDC. CDC Statistics Cancer.org How about, "Cervical cancer can take years to develop" it takes 15-20 years according to WHO. WHO source And, "most women who develop cervical cancer do so because they aren't being screened regularly" Cancer.org source When I say, "Since most cervical cancer happens in middle age, we won't see the benefits for a few decades in terms of cancer prevention." it's because the CDC says that the median age for HPV-associated cervical cancer is 48. Manufactured homes in California, advice?

A HUD inspector is irrelevant for anything at all about modulars. S/he has nothing to do with any kind of housing construction except for mobile homes, of which manufactured is a type. The HUD regs are irrelevant to other types of housing, i.e. those that use stick or modular methods. For instance, mobile/manufactured homes require tie downs, etc. (I was involved in writing the HUD mobile home regs.), other homes not, because why would they need to? I'm not sure how it impacts the situation if you have to meet 2 entirely different sets of regulations, as you've explained. Are you sure we're talking the same kind of modular? They put netZero 100% solar modular homes in New York City, for gosh sake, for substantially less than you've quoted as cost.

I'm curious, though, was the financial aspect of the situation the ONLY reason they were destroyed? I know, it's been in the news about problems with building materials from China, that have been used in many areas of the country, that are contaminated. And there's apparently no way to resolve the problems with this wallboard, but to destroy it. Could that have also been involved in this case?

Many homes have been built that never should have been built. Now, months and years later, the most responsible thing to do is take them down. The same goes for many of the big box stores that are now standing empty. Buildings need to be maintained which takes money. Taxes need to be paid. Vacant buildings turn into health hazards full of mold, rot and vermon. Take them all down and restore the land. Lets hope we all come out of this economic disaster a little wiser.

but you have to understand the area...i'm sure they could have found buyers. if they'd lowered the price, in ca, the selling price is what the tax is based on...so not much loss...now that's 22 houses of waste for landfill...

having driven by victorville for years on the way to vegas it's amazing to see how the area has changed...used to be prized, what they called high desert...away from the smog of san bernardino...and not quite the heat of mohave...

we have a builder here (detroit) who uses un-employed and homeless persons to "house" sit his properties...(yes, they are pre-screened) too bad the bank couldn't have done the same thing...in fact a couple of his "employees" did well enough getting back on their feet, they became buyers...

I know that at least in my former home state, an empty house cannot be insured. This is why owners will be very reluctant to try to sell their home after they have moved out, leaving it empty to be sold - should something happen to destroy the house, the insurance will not pay. I don't know if this applies to all states, but would hope not considering the amount of people who give the keys over to the real estate agent to sell for them after they have left the area.

We used to live near that areaa and just in the last 10-15 years the area growth has gotten completly out of control. Big big houses, stores, car dealers light industry, but with major problems Water, and lack of high tech jobs had many driving long distances and leaving lots of kids without parental control. Very poor public transportation, lots of people have 3-5 cars, plus RV's, boats etc and no place to go. Very hot windy weather,but cold in winter. Lots of gangs and racial tensions. Being 3rd generation CA we have seen the state really suffer and sorry to say, the average person does not care. Just got back from a trip and oh we are so glad to have moved. But then Northern Calif has not changed much at all. Just like two different countries.
I do miss the veggies and fruit, but most of that is gone now. We did stop at a bank and I was amazed to see 2 guards with guns on duty, and high bullet proof glass all over--yep right off the freeway in Victorville.
