What rope moulding(slant) do you like best?

I have to pick out rope insert molding that will be put on the crown molding on my cabinets. After looking at several cabinet websites I realized that rope moulding comes slanted in 2 different directions. On one the twist slants to the left, the other slants to the right. The "left slant" seems to be used by most manufacturers but I like the right also. I was just curious what "slant" you like the best or which one do you have on your crown moulding? does anyone know the reason why the manufacturers use more of the "left slant"? (I would love to see your pictures)

The thing is, if you turn the molding upside down, you get the other direction.

Since you're noticing, I'd be certain to make certain your installer knows this is something you're choosing and if they install it upside down/going in the wrong direction, they're going to have to buy more and do it over.

But then, the slants could meet, pointing towards each other over a focal point or something. Possibilities for design are endless! :)

I gotta tell you. I don't have molding yet, but being as anal as I am, I'm glad of your question. It would KILL me to find later that it's going the wrong way, or meeting in a weird way.

Uhh, no, that is not true.

In any event, I don't think it matters a whit, except that, as Christine points out, you want to be consistent (or at least deliberate).

Doing what you like with more than "cosmetic choices" is a freedom that only someone who is pretty well funded can take. If it only involves painting your walls passionate purple and filling it with tiki room furniture, then that's a low cost risk that almost anyone can take, because that's easily rectified if your spouse loses a job and you can't afford the home any more. If (true story) you've taken a 3 bedroom home 2 bath home and used one of the bedrooms to expand the master, used another to make a walk in closet and combined the two bathrooms into one, then you've done what you like and what works for you---but at a SIGNIFICANT detriment to the value of the home. A 1 bedroom 1 bath home simply will not appraise the same as a 3/2. And then, if you're forced to sell the home because of a health change, you're really going feel those dollars lost because of "doing what you liked". However, if the home is paid for, and retirement is very well funded, perhaps it's not as big of a "sting" to you to lose 200K in home value. That's the economic freedom I'm talking about. And, most Americans are 3 missed paychecks away from poverty rather than flush enough to be able to take the chance of adversely affecting the largest asset that they own adversely. So, "do what you like", but keep the "bones" mainstream would be my advice. And never extend yourself financially for anything too personal. Because the moment you commit yourself financially to those permanant personal choices is the moment you risk losing it all. No one is immune to the economy!

Thanks everybody. There are so many talented people out there. Bmore, that's a very good point about the center doors not opening as far in option 1. We had not considered that. Originally, we did have something akin to a corbel. I worried about it getting too cute. DH will post that later. Country smile, my main reasons for this "hutch" are for a large expanse of counter space plus additional storage. The need for counter space is one reason I do not want to bring any part of it to the lower cabinetry, as several people have suggested, though I agree it would look attractive. DH and I refer to this section of the kitchen as a hutch, as a way to differentiate it from the other sections. But it does not have to be furniture like, just attractive, proportional, and functional. I agree with others here that the all glass option opens up the space, and is a good contrast to the large floor to ceiling wall pantry, which will hold a small microwave, food, etc. Though this kitchen will have far more storage than my current kitchen, it is not huge. I am just not certain if I can afford to give up this space that I might need for practical items and don't want to end up adding fabric down the road. I too am a dish freak, though they don't all go together. So, I want practical and at the same time pretty, hence, trying to combine the glass and closed doors. LWO, a good point about not making the whole thing so wide. The architect suggested we could do that and I also felt it was crowded. DH is working on getting the final plans drawn up for the cabinet maker, but will play will all of your ideas later. Many many thanks to all of you. GW is becoming our KD.

Ah ha!! Gotcha : ) Here it is a bit smaller, and then a distant shot of the first, larger one. Now I'm thinking the larger one is fine and has more presence and definition. Maybe in between? I tried some of those curved iron accents I've seen at ending positions or posts (but can't remember the details, so it just shows the general look.) And, ya know, a piece of gray flagstone on top of those columns and even across the wall looks great and ties nicely with the roof and drive. I would think you could fit the moulding piece around the gutter area, hiding it. As a front cap sort of thing. It's a design problem to work out : ) Have to figure any water issues in. Do you have a closeup or drawing of the area, how the pieces and planes are currently fitting together? Should pull a distant shot of the larger size in also.

Even computer controlled batch mixing of paint can differ subtly from one batch to the next. The easy solution is to take one of your doors to a local reputable paint store and have them color match it. Have them choose "textured" rather than smooth for the match as it takes more than a single measurement and then averages them. It's more accurate than a single scan. Then have a painter paint the molding. On the cabinet company's dime.

What originally made me notice the difference is a man who sells the moldings told me that it is very hard to make the corners line up unless you cut a right slant and a left slant piece on the 45 and fit them together. So I googled "rope crown molding" and saw the different slants. Since our hand writing usually slants to the right(except for lefties) the right slant seems more comfortable to look at. But the left slant seems to get your attention also. I wanted to find out what others preferred and why. I guess I'll flip a coin. Angie is right. The molding man tried to turn it upside down but it doesn't change directions. thanks

Ours slants to the left. Funny I never noticed or thought about this before. The corner where it meets looks like it is just bent around the corner and is perfectly mitered. These are the types of decisions that will wear you out in the end, lol. Things you never dreamed of having to decide!!

Dear Christine: Try this. Take a piece of paper and draw a few slashes on it, going from, say, upper right to lower left. Then rotate the paper around 180 deg. You will see that the slashes are still going from upper right to lower left. Try it!

Well, to save my marriage and what was left of my sanity, (lol)I picked up the phone and speed dialed the molding company before I changed my mind. The deciding factor was the cost. The left slant was $9 each for an 8ft piece and the right slant was $35 each. I needed 5 pieces. Since I couldn't come to a decision on appearance alone, my husband said to let the price make the decision for me. So left slant it is.. Thanks

I'm with SaraKat that these are the decisions that can just wear you down in the end, lol. I'm glad I didn't know about some of the things I now know about when we did our reno. It was so much easier that way. :) [Me: Can you put some thin rope molding on the fascia below the crown? Cabinet Maker: yep, sure can. Me: okay, good.]

That said, I just looked at ours and I see what your guy means about it being easier to cut a perfect miter with a left+right pair. But honestly, you'd need a magnifying glass to get up that close to see the difference in real life.

Here is ours: I can tell the difference now that I'm looking for it and I zoom into the picture up close. But I can't tell the difference with the naked eye from room level. You will be totally fine with all one slant direction.
