What rope moulding(slant) do you like best?

I have to pick out rope insert molding that will be put on the crown molding on my cabinets. After looking at several cabinet websites I realized that rope moulding comes slanted in 2 different directions. On one the twist slants to the left, the other slants to the right. The "left slant" seems to be used by most manufacturers but I like the right also. I was just curious what "slant" you like the best or which one do you have on your crown moulding? does anyone know the reason why the manufacturers use more of the "left slant"? (I would love to see your pictures)

The thing is, if you turn the molding upside down, you get the other direction.

Since you're noticing, I'd be certain to make certain your installer knows this is something you're choosing and if they install it upside down/going in the wrong direction, they're going to have to buy more and do it over.

But then, the slants could meet, pointing towards each other over a focal point or something. Possibilities for design are endless! :)

I gotta tell you. I don't have molding yet, but being as anal as I am, I'm glad of your question. It would KILL me to find later that it's going the wrong way, or meeting in a weird way.

Uhh, no, that is not true.

In any event, I don't think it matters a whit, except that, as Christine points out, you want to be consistent (or at least deliberate).

On leveling ground to make a pond work I have a 16" drop from the high end nearest the house to the 14'at the lower end from the fill needed to provide good runoff of rain. Starting at the high end, I dug the hole down 12", left a 12" wide ledge, went down 16", another 12" ledge and then down another 16". I used the diggings to level everything to about 16" up from the first ledge. Giving me about 48" total depth. I built a form to make trapezoid shaped concrete blocks 3" thick. Lots of work, but then what does a retiree have but time. The shape allowed me to form curved or straight lines around the pond to give it a roughly kidney shape. Ultimately, I used all the dirt to fill the concrete shape with no leftover. I gathered limestone rocks from the hillside beneath the bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River and laid them on the concrete for a rugged, natural look. My grandson found a chunk of limestone with a roughly bowl shape that had a hole worn in the middle. He gave it to me to use as the "spring "inlet to the waterfall used for aeration. All this nearly 15 years ago. There are pictures buried somewhere around here. Maybe I can find them. Oh, yeah, the hole is lined with EPDM pond liner. After a disastrous massive dieoff 3 years ago, I ignored the pond for 2 years and am now trying to rejuvenate it again. So far I put in 12 feeder gold fish last summer. 2 died off, but I now have 10 healthy 4-5" common goldfish swimming in a very bare pond. I am waiting for planting weather so we can have some plant life again. I was at a funeral this morning and saw a nice peace lily. I remember when we had one in a large vase with a Beta living under the plant. Thought when it warms up I might try making a float and put in a peace lily. Thoughts?

Linda Lou, I won't die of botulism because I'm not eating the pickles. (grin) I don't like dill pickles, I only like sweet ones. If the stepmom drops over tomorrow though, I swear it is NOT my fault. The pickles are not ready yet. LOLOLOL No, you weren't too hard on me. I just got defensive because I had especially posted that it was an unapproved method, that I was a bad example, and that I had increased the vinegar, then got put on the hot seat for it. Timers for the sprinkler? Yes, we have one. Dad shuts it off because he doesn't "trust it". (grin) Figures, doesn't it? The squash muffins are wonderful, spicy and full of orange zest. I didn't have any nutmeg, so I used some ginger and cloves instead, just because I like those spices. They were very yummy. Orange & Squash Muffins (Posted by GardenLad) 1 cup shredded summer squash Salt 2 eggs 1/2 cup firmly packed light brown sugar 1/2 cup high-quality vegetable oil 2 tbls freshly squeezed orange juice 1 1/2 tsp grated orange zest 1 tsp vanilla extract 1 1/4 cups unbleached all purpose flour 1 tsp baking powder 1 tsp baking soda 1 tsp grated nutmeg 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon 1/2 cup golden raisins 1 tsp granulated sugar mixed with 1 tsp grated nutmeg Place the squash in a colander, sprinkle with about 1 tbls salt, mix together, and let stand 30 minutes. Gently squeeze to release moisture and pat dry with paper toweling. Reserve. If using frozen squash, skip the salt. Preheat oven to 350F. Grease 12 regular sized muffin tins. Beat the eggs in a mixing bowl until lemon colored. Add the sugar, oil, oragne juice, zest and vanilla. Beat until thick and smooth. In a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking pwoder, baking soda, 1/2 tsp salt, nutmeg and cinnamon. fold the dry mixture into the egg mixture, stirring just until well blended. Fold in the drained squash and the raisins. Spoon batter into the prepared muffin tins, filling each about three-fourths full, and sprinkle the sugar/nutmeg mixture over the top. Bake until a wooden skewer inserted in the center of a muffin tests clean, about 20-25 minutes. Cool the muffin tins about 3 minutes efore turnout out. As an alternative, this can be baked in a 9 x 5 loaf pan for about an hour. Let rest a good ten minutes before turning out. Although any spread works on these, they're expecially good with orange butter. To make that, merely whip together softened, unsalted butter and grated orange zest. Wanna a picture? Will this work with your profile? Let's say your pencil is 1" wide okay? For the piece that butts into the other, cut the end that does the butting at a 45 degree angle from both sides so it ends up as a "point". That end will be 1" wide, but the point, being 45'd from both sides, will only be 1/2" long. For the piece that gets butted into, cut a 45 degree notch into the side of it that is 1" wide but only 1/2" deep, and it'll have a 45 degree angle on both sides. They should fit nicely together, and there should be no lippage issues with the vertical part of the profile. My remodeled kitchen and bathroom. My kitchen is an eat in kitchen. My house is a 1 1/2 story so the unfinished upstairs is the attic. Neighbour Ken said it would only take some new drywall and something to cover the sub floor to make it a nice big sitting room, bedroom or craft room. Lots of storage but the attic is pretty full up right now. At Christmas time I store all my baked goods in tins on the attic stairs because it is cool. Natural wood fireplace but I only burn those 3 hour logs but in case of power outage I have lots of seasoned wood out back that I could use in the fireplace. My bedroom at the back of the house is cool in the winter and the summer which I like. No mortgage Two room unfinished basement with cement floors and cement block walls which is good because when the storm sewers back up as they often do I don't have to worry about cleaning carpets or replacing furniture. New washing machine will be up on blocks soon in anticipation of the next flood. House faces west so lots of afternoon sun which helps to heat up the house in the winter. Clothes chute in the hall to the laundry room. Lots of parks and trails nearby plus I live just 3 blocks from the Detroit River and within walking distance to the mouth of Lake St, Clair. I love being so close to the water and the riverfront parks. Most of my family lives within walking distance. No carpeting in my house which is wonderful especially when I have 2 cats and a dog that seem to shed all the time. Original hardwood floors but they do need to be refinished. Heated linen closet in the winter when the furnace is on - sheets and towels are always warm Fairly big lot, deep fenced in back yard Wonderful neighbours except for the witch. Grew up on this tree lined street so it is home and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. LOL I love my bed which I don't spend nearly enough time in. I love my house when it is decorated at Christmas. Very cozy.

What originally made me notice the difference is a man who sells the moldings told me that it is very hard to make the corners line up unless you cut a right slant and a left slant piece on the 45 and fit them together. So I googled "rope crown molding" and saw the different slants. Since our hand writing usually slants to the right(except for lefties) the right slant seems more comfortable to look at. But the left slant seems to get your attention also. I wanted to find out what others preferred and why. I guess I'll flip a coin. Angie is right. The molding man tried to turn it upside down but it doesn't change directions. thanks

Ours slants to the left. Funny I never noticed or thought about this before. The corner where it meets looks like it is just bent around the corner and is perfectly mitered. These are the types of decisions that will wear you out in the end, lol. Things you never dreamed of having to decide!!

Dear Christine: Try this. Take a piece of paper and draw a few slashes on it, going from, say, upper right to lower left. Then rotate the paper around 180 deg. You will see that the slashes are still going from upper right to lower left. Try it!

Well, to save my marriage and what was left of my sanity, (lol)I picked up the phone and speed dialed the molding company before I changed my mind. The deciding factor was the cost. The left slant was $9 each for an 8ft piece and the right slant was $35 each. I needed 5 pieces. Since I couldn't come to a decision on appearance alone, my husband said to let the price make the decision for me. So left slant it is.. Thanks

I'm with SaraKat that these are the decisions that can just wear you down in the end, lol. I'm glad I didn't know about some of the things I now know about when we did our reno. It was so much easier that way. :) [Me: Can you put some thin rope molding on the fascia below the crown? Cabinet Maker: yep, sure can. Me: okay, good.]

That said, I just looked at ours and I see what your guy means about it being easier to cut a perfect miter with a left+right pair. But honestly, you'd need a magnifying glass to get up that close to see the difference in real life.

Here is ours: I can tell the difference now that I'm looking for it and I zoom into the picture up close. But I can't tell the difference with the naked eye from room level. You will be totally fine with all one slant direction.
