I'm in love! A picture from my cabinet maker included

My KD sent me this picture and I'm so excited! This is one of the corbels that will be supporting the granite eating bar on my new peninsula. I can't wait until everything comes together! Next week I am expecting cabinets! Yea!

These are my sample doors. The darker one is my actual door style with the island stain, the other door is the main cabinet color on a different door.

And my sink and faucet. can't wait until they all meet! lol

And my granite.

I just had to see them all together again.

My hardwood floors are all finished. Rough electrical is being finished on Monday. The last of the appliances are being delivered on Weds. Things are moving right along. And my hubby didn't divorce me after I gutted the bathroom while he was out of town. The new vanity arrives on Monday and the toilet is here and ready to be installed. Things are going great so far.

Won't be long before the the sum is better than its parts. Enjoy that pretty faucet and your new Toto! I really like mine and am looking forward to replacing my old POS hall bath toilet next year.

How would YOU define a " good " cabinet maker ? That's the starting point for this discussion. Also, it doesn't matter if you live in East Possum Hollow or on Park Ave. - a drawer body worth having and that will last costs at minimum a hundred bucks to procure, assemble, and deliver even if you forgo a profit. Now, if one were yo use a pair of exposed partial extension epoxy slides for $7.95, and some scrap plywood he had lying around charging you nothing cause someone else already paid for it , and decided that all the labor expended on going to the depot to buy said cheap slides and to cut / nail / glue free plywood together was only worth ten dollars to him - then sure , you could get a "nice " looking vanity for 400 clams. Oh, sorry mam, I forgot to charge you for the glue , prolly used about two bits worth. Oh, and that quart of stain was 14.95. But , I'm not chargin ya for the ploy because I had some left over from aunt Mable's pie safe. It's great that you got a smoking deal for a good looking cabinet. However, you experience isn't typical or even realistic for the vast majority of people coming across this thread. Be kind of like me showing you my first kitchen and it's fabulous German engineering and gee wiz appliances none of which cost me dime - aren't I lucky ? thanks everyone - gocelts - that was my intention with the mosaic tile. It is also the same mosaic above the stove in the kitchen julie - you are correct. Evrytime i go past i just gaze and sigh in wonder and joy The backsplash tile was inspires by the tile under the middle of the cabinet. i bought some of those 8 years ago while visiting South Africa with the intention of making a table. It is a guinea fowl and has the green 7 yellow etc. i then chose the background to be the green with the random insertion of the brown & yellow.

1) Regarding the screws.... For the drawer faces: Pocket holes should be drilled into the face frames if they must be attached permanently vs using the hardware to keep them on. The pocket holes should have covers attached (either the plastic or wood options). I personally prefer if they are removable via removal of the hardware so they can be changed out or refaced in the future & since you're going the custom route I'd defiantly want it! Inside the cabinets: A pilot hole should be drilled prior to screw if the wood hardness requires it & the screw counter sunk (slightly below the side walls) with or without plastic caps (depending on the company). Cabinet/Wall Brace:Are all the cabinets secured to the wall with simple screws?? I was really surprised to see this! How are they making sure the bases are secured to studs & not just drilled through into the gypsum board? In the past I've seen cabinet makers use a base board across the run anchored into wall studs and the bases are then secured to the board. Holes: The hole that will be exposed once the dishwasher is installed needs to be fixed. The fridge cabinet with the double screws and the blank hole is ridiculous...whomever was doing the install rushed and didn't care about screw placement or taking the time to properly aline things before drilling. Again= Custom built should = quality control and care! Yes there are MUCH better ways of finding the studs...even just using your knuckles to knock on the wall can get you close enough that a max of 2 holes might need drilled if you miss it the first time....again, sloppy work installing. The range microwave: Did they know that cabinet was going to support a microwave/hood? I'd ask about the install and max weight support. I don't believe 2 screws is enough to hold it (especially if they only screwed it into the wall & not a support board!) but don't know...I'd just hate to have it come crashing down a year from now! *You need to make sure the cabinet makers know that screw placement & finish result is important to you and you expect no screws will be felt or seen once the install is complete. 2) Shims: Yes, it's totally normal for wood shims to be left under the cabinets. Floors aren't completely level and in a new build the house will settle over time and the floor will change so it's important that the cabinets can be leveled. This is why RTA cabinets like IKEA have adjustable feet on the base that's hidden with a toe kick. Custom cabinet makers use wood shims to level on site during install and those can then be removed or added to as time goes on and any changes are required to keep the cabinets level. 3) Fixture & Outlet Holes: Yes, it's common to have large square pre-cut from the backs before install as plumbing is different for every job & since fixtures change depending on the choices made in faucet, garbage disposal, dishwasher lines, etc they can't make exact cuts. Again, this is why a lot of RTA cabinets are backless and if the backing is ordered it must be cut by the installer to fit the existing fixture spaces. HOWEVER- I totally agree with your being upset about the range plug placement and their solution to cut another hole into the side of the custom cabinet boxes. Although- I'm not entirely sure I understand correctly if it had to go through another base to reach the outlet or just the base of that unit vs the back side where a hole was already cut? I don't know what another solution would have been.... 4) Cabinet Face Gaps: Are you doing a full overlay with the new build as well? I completely agree that the gap's should be consistent and you definitely shouldn't be able to see the contents of the drawers! If the cabinets are full overlay why is the frame not hiding the contents? If they are custom inset then I'd be very picky about how it all lines up since this is a fine craft that requires skill & time to get right (hence the excessive cost)...plus wood swells & contracts so they need to fit properly with a slight consistent gap after install.

Great colors! And that corbel is gorgeous. I can't wait to see them all together.

I sometimes wonder why more of these great kitchens don't appear in more magazines. Seems like the magazine editors should be keeping an eye on these threads.

Thanks for looking. It is so cool each time a new design element is added to the bunch. I can see it all in my head and can't wait to see all done.

breezygirl - the stone is Magma Supreme leathered granite. Got a steal of a deal on it because of that large fissure in it. The fissure was repaired and it turned off a lot of people. I love it. Adds character and I'm making sure it goes right across the middle of my butler's pantry where it is fully supported and very visible. :)

rosegarden - That is indeed a Rachiele sink. If it wasn't packaged like the gold in Fort Knox, I'd have taken it out of the box tons of times just to look at it. But I have to be content with it sitting in my garage patiently waiting to be installed.

CEFreeman - My kitchen isn't going to be one of those simple kitchens with clean lines. I'm really traditional and love worn, distressed furniture with cabriole legs and details. We're adding a peninsula to the kitchen and it will have a raised eating bar. The raised bar will be supported with a wall hidden behind cabinetry as well as the corbels. The one thing I don't have set in my mind is the exact shape of the bar. Going to have to play around with some cardboard templates and figure it out once the cabs and supporting wall are in. I can guarantee it will look traditional.

SAND - the faucet is a Waterstone PLP 5500 in black ORB. It has a living finish so the black will wear through to a bronze finish.

btw, "granite eating bar" made me think, "Wow, they have a bar for eating granite? They must have some really strong teeth!" LOL Don't mind me, sometimes my mind goes off on strange tangents.

I did my kitchen in 2 finishes and I LOVE IT. I live in a suburb of MInneapolis and toured some million dollar plus homes last weekend that were in the Parade of HOmes and they all had 2 tone kitchens.

timcar - I'll have to find out about that door. It isn't my door so I don't know. The finish is a custom stain. My cabinet maker uses a couple of different sources for doors, so I'll have to ask who makes it.

lisa_a - My kids are way too picky to eat granite. lol

michellemarie - I've always loved the look of a 2 tone kitchen too. I'd love to see a pic of yours. :)

Thanks for the confirmation, PP. you are going to be SO happy with that sink and faucet, particularly with the ensemble you are putting together.

LOL on the sink packaging!!!! I have ordered several sinks from Dino and gave him grief about it. He packs them all by himself!!!

I love detail such as yours.
I've lived with so much visual clutter I'm surprised I'm not looking for slab, Euro-everything that looks like a flat wall. [LOL].

I'm a beaded inset kinda chick and love well made detail.
Please feed me more pics? As soon as that corbel is attached to something cool. :)

Thanks for all the kind comments. I put a new kitchen in my last house that I loved and then we moved a year later. Was hard to leave it behind. This is a pic of the kitchen from my previous house. My new one will definitely be different but I want it to have the same warm feeling and details.

For some reason I'm destined to have kitchens with odd angles and difficult layouts. The island shape in this kitchen gave me fits. Spent more time on it than anything else. Wanted to maximize the island because it was my main prep area.
