has anyone used a Kneeler/Seat for gardening?

I've been considering purchasing one of these and checked out several online. This one from Plow and Hearth is one of the larger ones measuring 26.5 wide x 10.75 deep x 19 high. I thought a deeper one might be more stable. The last thing I need is to lean forward and topple into the flower bed.

My local nursery has them but they're fairly small - but at least the locking mechanism seems secure.

Has anyone used one?

I had one. I used it more often as a seat then as a kneeler... mainly because I'd rather sit. I forgot to bring it along when I my ex-husband and I split. I would love to have another one.

I have one, used it quite a bit, now I'm not too steady anymore. It's nice, and useful.

I sure have!! Grew heirloom scarlet runner "Insuk's Wang Kong" in Calif. on my chain link fence as an ornamental edible and LOVED it. It's even prettier and more productive than Scarlet Emperor, in my opinion. Attracts hummingbirds and produces some very big, tasty beans. I highly recommend it and I have some beans I don't need- want them? :) I used to have Swiss Chard Bright Lights, Osaka Purple mustard, Udmalbet eggplant, purple basil, variegated ginger and some pepper plants on my front porch along with my flowers because they are very attractive plants. Sadly, some thief kept stealing the healthiest and best of those plants out of their pots anytime I was out of the house for a weekend. Now, I grow them in my backyard patio garden instead. I also have grown mizuna mustard, red orach, tiger eye amaranth, and Mantovana chicory as ornamental veggies. Their foliage is pretty, in my opinion. Currently I have Rotonda Bianca Sfumata di Rosa eggplant growing in a 7-gallon pot on the back patio, and I believe its fruit are very ornamental. :) My front porch now has some more boring looking edible stuff on it- Lucullus (green) swiss chard, Komatsuna (green) mustard, plain-leaf ginger, and Cicoria Catalogna Rossa which looks a lot like a dandelion. So far, none of these have interested the local thief. Those of you who can actually grow pretty edibles in your front yard without any of them being stolen, have a big blessing to give thanks for. Remember that. :)

Yes you can make it sanborn. If you railroad the fabric, you'll need three yards. Fold the fabric length wise so that you have a 104 inch run then cut the width 42 to 44" inches wide (depending on the thickness of the foam you use) Upholstery fabric (that's I suggest you use) runs 54' wide, so you'll have about 10 to 12" x 108" left over for throw pillows. You can either use foam or stuffing. Turn you fabric inside out and sew along the back, turn you fabric to the right side and slip your foam in, if it's too loose, sew it tighter. Then sew one end and slip your foam in again. The other end you can pin tightly, then hand sew close. I did a cushion for my piano seat this way, and got a nice tight fit. Be use to pick out a fabric (pattern) that lends itself to railroading. Also you may have to glue together the foam cushion to get a 108" foot run. They sell foam adhesive in an spray can. I did it with a lot of help from the Foam place. It's like an Upholstery and Foam Supply kind of place. I brought the chair seat to them and they cut high density foam to fit. It's about 2 or 3 inches deep. The old seats had an old leather insert that was in the center of the frame. He sold me some upholstery webbing and a tool to stretch it across the open area where the leather used to be, and I stapled it down. Then the foam sits on top and then staple the fabric down to the underside of the wood. I never would have figured this out, but the guy was really helpful in explaining how to do it. Cost $100 for foam for four chairs and webbing and tool. Worth every penny because those chairs don't kill my back any more.

The reviews look great, and if I were an avid gardener I'd probably want one!

For now I have to be content with an upside-down litter bucket to sit on (another one for weeds and/or gardening tools).... and a seat-cushion to kneel on (which I got on a give-away day at a baseball game).

I especially like the side bars shown on the linked kneeler for assistance in getting up.

Oh, definitely, you should get one. Amazon has a number of them available, and no shipping! I've had mine for a number of years, and do put a pillow in when using it as a kneeler, as I've had knee replacement, and doc said that would be OK! It's great for helping me get up, too.

I JUST started using something better than the kneeler (which I had something similar). I ordered gel knee pads that strap on with velcro. They are the best thing since sliced bread, IMO. Once on, you don't have to move anything around when gardening like a pad or seat. You can literally drop to your knees safety - anywhere - and crawl around, and the knees stay comfortable. Great if you wash your floors by hand too. I LOVE THESE THINGS.

I was skeptical at first when I saw them thinking they would not be comfy, but ordered them anyway since reviews were good. I used them for the first time last weekend, all day, and I kept saying to my DH how great they are - quite the knee saver. No aches, pains or anything.....and best of all, no moving my pad or seat as I garden, and I have 7+ very large flower gardens on our property. I was crawling on top of mulch and whatnot in my garden and didn't feel a thing. (BTW, I'm 51, with bad knees, so I'm no spring chic).

I got mine at HSN, (video attached) but a search brings up other brands that you may like better. Like Oprah, these are MY NEW FAVORITE THING!!!!

I gave my daughter one for her birthday several years ago and she uses it all the time. Earlier I had suggested the gel knee pads and she said she had them and didn't care for them.

I have the step 2 one and it is nice, but for planting a border I found two kick boards from the dollar store work just as well. I keep moving them down the line and I just move to the next pad. Best two dollars ever spent on the garden!

Those knee pads look interesting. I'm going to HSN to read the reviews. I just use a $2 kneeling pad or bend over to protect my knees but that's not really a good idea. The kneeling pad needs to be moved all the time.

I was wondering--what kind of gardening do you do seated?

Things like picking beans, peas, peppers, etc are great to do seated. We usually just use a bucket. Maybe not the most comfortable, but it works! Lol

I used to use a 2" thick vinyl covered foam pad to kneel on but it's getting too hard for me to get up (my knees are shot- and I'm not ready for knee replacement yet). The kneeler/seat would be handy because if I do kneel then I'd have to arms to help me get up again.

Last summer I didn't kneel at all - I did most of my planting and weeding by bending over - not the most attractive view and not the most comfortable for my back.

I used to have one of those several years ago and it was ok then.Fast forward a few more years,the knees got so bad that i could no longer get on them.So i got the little sit on Ames garden scooter.I can sit on it,roll myself around,and it has room under the seat for my hand tools etc.Best money i ever spent,right up there with the Hula Hoe.

I own one. Did not leave it behind in the packing of my stuff. LOL

Presently it lives with my daughter along with a bunch of other stuff that she will miss when I want it back. :)
