Pool decking choice help- wear & cleaning
Comments (21)Yea I am following this thread as we are re-doing our pool deck soon. Jim I love the gothic stone, as does DH. Price is a big factor, we can get it from NPT here in Vegas, contractor price is over $7 a sq ft. Ventura, is that acrylic overlay hot? There are so many brands to choose from and I agree. look at the installers technique. I personally like elite crete, but haven't had the opportunity to put it out in the sun to check heat factor. To zarbiya123, I love the C & D pavers, the lighter colors are cool enough to walk on in 110 degree heat here, just a little too busy for our small yard/deck. I was thinking of doing the boca style, not the brick. I wish they made the boca in bigger sizes. I put out all their colors and can say after a few days in Vegas heat, the lighter colors were tolerable to walk on. Stay away from the darker tans and greys if you are in the desert and like bare feet. Enjoy. We are supposed to get into the 80's - 90's this week so I asked DH to bring home sample boards of acrylic overlay to see how hot it gets. I will report on that soon. The overlay can be done in so many patterns that we can mimic a stone look. As someone said, look at the installers technique. For it to look nice, you need to add accent colors and sealer, I am really fussy as to how "grout" joints are done. Sealer can be slippery as Tess said. I like the wet sealer look, but too dangerous around a pool. If I do an overlay I would do a penetrating sealer, not a high shine one. And I like saw cuts, not the grout joint look. Too many choices and not enough money : ) Barb...See MoreOld pool, pipes leaking, concrete deck cracked, need help
Comments (6)Jennifer and Tresw, Thanks a lot for your advice. In fact, we swam today in the pool, yeaaaahhhH! Well, not really swimming, because the water was cold, about 60F and because I let the garden hose running in fresh water for an hour to lift up the level, but as a side effect it got even colder... But the clarity is now great. It is amazing comparing to a week ago, when was a swamp... What a miracle. I got the 4 way test kit, as suggested by TRESW and the readings were not that bad. Chlorine was really really low 0.4-0.6, but Ph was just right 7.6 and TA was 80 ppm (could have been 70 ppm, but with the background coloring I could not really say). The leaks are really big issue though. I broke the cement around the skimmer and now I can see the top plastic of the feeding tunnel (about 3-4 inches deep down), and it has about 0.5 inches water. What is even more worrisome is that the water is about 2" above the pool level, which means that the walls are all filled up with water all the way to the concrete deck and it is overflowing from any crack the water can get through. Also, the lines around the concrete deck are wet, as I dug about an inch deep around and now water started amassing around. And this is on the other side of the pool... I am having a serious leakage, that is for sure. I will rent these days a power hammer from Home depot and I intend to break to pieces the deck. The problem is I have not decided what to do with the debris yet. Any suggestions? As for the dead animal, I am no longer worried. I cleaned, and shocked, and cleaned, and shocked and now I believe there is nothing left from it... I hope. I certainly will avoid any contact of the water with my mouth for the next month or so, but overall I think I am over this now :) Thanks for all support and advice. If something else comes out, please shoot. I am ready to make some pics and post them online for discussion. Best, Lubo...See Morecleaning tigerwood decking help! asap
Comments (5)Hey John, I haven't been by in a while. I am in the process of cleaning my 3-4 year old ipe/garapa deck. Oh my gosh. Hardi Plank install starts in two weeks. I see that you never use a pressure washer. I have the oxalic acid. Is scrubbing the dirt the only safe way to clean? **** Deck is great - the local architect saw it a few weeks ago, he asked where I got those ideas (woods etc). He said he wished he had a deck like that. I told him I got the ideas from some bike riding good ole boy on gardenweb.com What a hoot!! Thanks!!!! tom (the deck as it was before the dirt!!)...See MoreNEED Help! Pool build question about clean up prior to decking
Comments (0)Do the drywall forms used for the gunite stage need to be removed before decking or is it okay to backfill and leave them in place? I would think it should all be taken out but have heard that it gets buried?...See Moregatorguy
