Architectural Digest Home Design Show

If you are in NYC this weekend, try your best to get to the Architectural Digest Home Design Show! It's at Pier 94 (West Side Highway @ 55th Street) until Sunday, 3/20. While the design displays and exhibit booths deal with every room of the house and exteriors, the kitchen world was well-represented by the likes of Crownpoint, Kennebec, Wood Mode, Wolf/Subzero, Liebherr, Aga, Electrolux, Rangecraft, Grothouse, and on and on.

For the price of one $25 admission ticket (good for all days of the show): you can visit two other companion shows which are featuring 40+ dining environments and the works of 45+ individual artists; attend all design seminars; get a free one-on-one design consult, cooking demos and tastings, etc. Plus, if you purchase your ticket online, you get a comp subscription to Architectural Digest! I went today and intend to return on Sunday. There's just that much to see. And, no. I don't work for Architectural Digest:-) I'm just that excited about turning my TKO friends onto a great and exciting show. Hope you can make it!

Hi Marthavila, I went to the show today and had lots of fun. I even dragged my husband along to make it a "date". Thanks for your post!

Thanks, Jana, also for the photos of your absolutely stunning ramblers, wow! Beales also had Paul's Himalayan Musk, what a beauty! I wish it repeated though. Does Excelsea repeat? Thanks, George. I bribed customs - just kidding! Well, we now live in Cambridge, England, and so do our roses. So this was only a short trip for us to London. Transporting the potted roses, including the two climbers, with taxis and trains was however a bit tricky. At King's Cross train station I very nearly scratched a few people by inadvertantly waving around the lanky Sir Paul Smith. Entering MacDo there to change our little one's diapers proved to be another challenge. Imagine surprise howls at the doorstep - but at least our baby didn't get scratched ;-). Should we come back to the US, we will have to leave our roses behind and start from scratch - again. Cheers, Andrea

Pal, thanks for taking the time to look at my link and your comments. And it is nice to know we are on the same page. I don't follow trends, well maybe some....am trying to keep myself from a white kitchen. But it seems so darn right in my house and love what has been seen. With my age it probably doesn't matter what direction I head. Although there will not be any WW, it is much easier to care for wood floors throughout. The trend factor has hit me twice in buying lithographs and antique collections. When they go commercial with knockoffs and calendars, I am over it. We had a 2 day farm auction and it eluded me that the knockoffs went for higher bids than the antiques. What always bothers me about shag carpeting is: Yes you can clean it easily, but can you get all that lurks beneath. A lot of suction up the "whatever is there" and the cleaning solution. The spots always seem to make their way back at some point, even when professionally done. I was told that a lot of the new shag and rugs are made with some percent of recycled plastic. This is probably true about most WW depending upon price. Not being able to wash pillow covers would be a problem in my house. I suspect a lot of the materials used in producing rugs and upholstery fabric is unknown to us. Plastic or poly included in most of these would warrant no drying or high heat washing. Especially if the thread used is foreign material. Is this part of the throw away society? I'm rambling and off subject a bit.

The kitchen will become a bottleneck with those two back bedrooms, especially when it's time to bring laundry to the laundry room. To be perfectly clear, the red circle highlights the bottleneck spot -- a person sitting on a stool at the island will block entrance to the two back bedrooms /bath: Is there really a window seat in the powder room? Does anyone, anywhere, curl up in a window seat in the powder room with a good book? Does anyone socialize in the powder room? (If you do, I might not want to know) That window seat is for when you don't want to curl up with a good book on the closet window seat. Window seats are lovely and everyone likes them ... but, really, why place them in these locations? Then again, I don't see anything wrong with "plain" if it's done well. When "plain" is done well, it become simple elegance. In my area 90% of all new builds are the mixed material homes. I thought that was what was popular now. All of the really nice homes in my area have at least 2 different materials That's true, but it's because today's trend is "stuff for the sake of stuff". More gables, add an accent of this or that, yes to a complicated roof. If you wee really crazy about those new builds that're going up in your area, you'd be buying one of them (cheaper and faster) rather than building your own house. So you can't really use those houses as a yardstick for what's good. Other thoughts: This is an often-discussed topic on these boards: Laundry patterns. Look at the path you'll have to take to move laundry to/from the master closet -- I'm tired just looking at it: With the powder room backing up to the master bath, I'd lose the toilet-in-a-closet ... and I'd open a door in that spot into the powder room. This would give you the function of a powder room on one side /master bath toilet on the other side ... with only one toilet to clean, and that toilet in a comfortable sized room with a window. Flip-flop the sink and the dishwasher. You want the sink near the fridge, and you want the dishwasher near the dirty dishes on the table. Did anyone mention that the great room won't receive much natural light? Overall, I don't think it's a horrible plan, and if you look at it as a starting point, it could become a nice house -- but as it's presented now, I side with those who say, "Eh, you could do better."

Wow, I wasn’t expecting to hear from so many people so soon, but you all know your stuff. I googled “‘80s contemporary house” and yup, looks a lot like my house:) Also, those of you who noticed the addition are correct, again, although I’m not sure when it was built. I would agree the cedar shingles are confusing as well as the arch style window. This home was a foreclosure. My husband and I bought it as our first home, as we didn’t want a cookie cutter house, and knew we could update the interior. Plus, it’s on a nice lot in a good neighborhood. I have always thought the exterior was unattractive...and i even like a lot of different styles as my decorating and clothing style is more bohemian or eclectic. I appreciate most architectural designs on homes, but not a fan of modern or contemporary due to it’s boring lines (IMO) and lack of charm and warmth. I’ve also liked lighter homes (stucco, especially) in whites or stone gray with black trim and interesting windows. With that being said, I am worried if I play up the modern that 1) it will be the only contemporary home in my neighborhood (well majority are traditional styles) and 2) it would not appeal to a lot of buyers (located in southern Indiana). We do not plan on staying in this house forever. Could any of you suggest a new color scheme in lighter shades, including the brick, that might look appropriate for the style? All of the modern homes seem to be so dark. Thanks!

One of the things I found most interesting about the show was the people watching. I enjoyed the blend of fashionista designers in stiletto heels, the slubby suburbanites like myself who hoped that no one would notice that they hadn't polished their clogs (in about three years), field-trips of young high school design students, and the dozen or so Amish cabinet makers with their families. There was something particularly delightful (in a jamming-the-system way) about seeing Amish moms nursing their babies amidst the Sub-Zero and crystal lighting displays as their husbands scrutinized the details of the latest cabinet designs from Crownpoint, Kennebec, and Wood Mode.

Oh, if you are working with or buying products from any of the companies exhibiting at the show, call or email them in advance and they may give a complementary ticket.

Well since my kitchen is totally done as far as all the big ticket items are concerned, there wasn't any danger whatsoever of my falling off the edge into some kind of temporary insane buying binge. Instead, I got a lot of pleasure in just seeing so many products that are discussed with regularity here on the KF and AF but that I've never seen before IRL. As a result, there were many aha moments in finally feeling and touching a Capital Culinarian, an Aga Pro, a Wolf 36" oven (displayed undercounter)Crown Point cabs or Grothouse counter tops. I also got immense pleasure from talking to some of the reps of products in my own kitchen and even got a few answers to things that have been bugging me for ages. For example, I finally learned that the reason why the toe kick for my Miele dw has never fit quite right is because the GC assembled the panel with extender arms backwards and the fix is a simple one I can do myself. Woo hoo! Other exciting things were some of the displays themselves -- like the Best range hood display which, at first glance, looked like an art installation. I also got a kick out of chatting at length with the team at the NKBA table about what I would differently if I were to ever to a kitchen remodel again.

As for the people watching, if you saw me, you would have sworn that this Brooklynite was one of the "slubby surbananites" donned as I was in my Mephistos and NYDJs. (But, then in the mind of some New Yorkers, Brooklyn is a suburb of the City, after all. lol) IMO, such attire made perfect sense for meeting the challenge of walking the cavernous environs of the Navy pier. :-)

We went to a Junior League of Wilmington Kitchen Showcase Tour of homes 2 years ago.....came back decided our kitchen was horrendous and well, the rest is history.....Most expensive Kitchen Tour I ever took.

I WISH I was there marthavila, sounds awesome. Unfortunately on this gorgeous spring weekend, dd1 is at home 24 hours post foot surgery and momma & Poppa Bear cannot leave the cave. :(
