wall moulding and door color

I am super confused. We are building a new house and the vibe of the house is European cottage. (funny eh?) Our builder thinks that wall moulding would be fabulous but of course "our" opinion is the only one that matters!! Here are the details of the house thus far. Light maple floors with a cherry border, cherry cabinets and a beige colored granite. Here are the questions: I have only seen white or painted wall moulding. Does anyone have pictures of a naural colored wood? Do the doors have to match the moulding? I don't know how I feel about white doors!! If we do the moulding on the main floor (den, living room, music room, dining and master) do we need to continue upstairs to the kiddos area?? How/ where do we stop it? Thanks so much for the added opinions... mine isn't very trustworthy right now!!

I assume you mean base moulding. The following are pictures of my previous residence in Wisconsin, an 80 year old bungalow. The living room and dining rooms had oak floors, base moulding, windows, doors, and trim. The back of the house 1st floor had maple floors, base moulding, doors, trim, windows. The attic, finished in the late 70's had pine floors, base moulding, trim. There were the original oak windows at front of house and newer windows upstairs probably of pine. The upstairs woodwork is painted but the 1st floor doors and trim is stained except for interior of bathroom. The base moulding adds quality in my opinion. The front rooms of this house had taller more ornate base moulding while the back rooms had a simpler style. There were doors that separated the fron from the back and the 1st floor from the 2nd. That's where the moulding changes.

I have the picture molding painted the wall color in my 1899 Victorian double. (The house wouldn't have had crown molding when it was built, and I therefore didn't add it during an extension recent (and still on-going!) renovation, so I can't help with that.) My 10-inch base and all other trim in the house is painted white, and my walls are a sandy beige, or a cream-with-a-little-coffee-added color. I think you can handle it however you want and either way would be appropriate. As someone else pointed out, painting trim the same color as its adjacent surfaces (crown the same as ceiling color, or picture molding the same as wall color) will make it "disappear" a bit. If it's something you'd rather highlight, paint it the trim color for the contrast.

Thanks for all the help. I'm adjusting my mind to the idea of a really dark ceiling and trying to imagine how the room will look when the room isn't being used as a "theater". I probably should have said in my original post that this our general rec room and will probably also act as the grandchildrens' "dorm" at some point. This room also has two windows and a glass door to a porch. I was planning on using white plantation shutters in the rest of the house and I don't think the white plantation shutters will work well for light control. Since these windows will be very visible from the street do you think it's important to keep the window treatments uniform or can I do something different on these windows from the rest of the house? I'm definitely way out of my comfort zone on this and any help will be appreciated.

You really have four options: 1. bite the bullet and paint the trim -- probably Decorator white in a semi-gloss, 2. paint the ceiling to match the current trim, 3. paint the ceiling with Dry Sage at a reduced value (10-30%), 4. paint the ceiling in one or more complimentary colors -- grey blue or pale gold come to mind as possibilities. You could go very dark in a room you want to be more dramatic and to sparkle a chandelier against (bedroom or DR, most likely). I favor 1 or 3. You could take a little of the dry sage and mix it into some decorator white to make a sample with what you have left over -- try it along a section of the crown. If you don't like it and another color doesn't sound more interesting, back to square one and painting trim white.

I think seeing a lot of the trim has been painted white, I’d be inclined to paint it all white including bookcase, you could put the wall colour on back wall of bookcase
