My first true scrappy quilt

Even though I have made three quilts with Marimekko scraps, they didn't feel like true scrappies to me because the scraps were not from my stash. This small quilt was made from the leftovers of 10 quilts that I have made. The binding and batting will also be scraps. I was so excited to find backing yesterday that is playful, but not childish, and contains all the colors of the top. With the backing I found, I think it will work for a new baby or an older child. I want to quilt this one myself, so it may remain unfinished for a while while I finish up another project. I just needed to work on something else for a change.

Just now had some time to read all the posts on this topic - imagine how one question brought about so many opinions! Reading this I have laughed out loud, nodded in agreement & shook my head in bewilderment. One thing I'm noticing tho is that not everyone is defining scrappy in the same way. Some think of scrappy as leftover fabrics of any type, some don't. Some think if you don't use the 'pull it out of the bag' method then it isn't scrappy but planned. I think I even read somewhere that scrappy is pretty much only from leftovers with no purchased fabrics. For what it's worth my 'scrappy' is most any quilt made of more than 6-8 fabrics. And even that is a general rule that can be broken:) Suppose you use 4-5 WOW as a background with a focus fabric, two complimentary med, one dark. That would not be scrappy to me, but at best a quilt w/a scrappy background. I made a sampler quilt w/all Kansas Trouble fabrics some of which I had to purchase, some from my stash, it is definitely scrappy. (all 20+ fabrics are from the same designer & all compliment each other, but I agonized over each & every selection) I agree w/many of the comments made - love the antique quilts for what they are & who made them. Love the newer patterns that use just a few fabrics from one designer's line. But have also seen some of these that are ho-hum, boring. It comes out looking like a 'comforter/quilt' made in China & sold at ElderBeerman in a bag:):( While I stated early on this thread that I love scrappy, I too am a little (a lot?!) victim of OCD. I can never master the pull-it-out-of-the-bag, bec I'm too fussy! So what I've learned from all these posts is that what works for me may not work for you --- & vice versa!!:) What one considers scrappy may not be to someone else -- which is OK. Beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder. What we can hope for is that someone may try something new that they haven't tried before! And celebrate diversity!! Cindy *side note--or QOD tomorrow?? Our community has one quilt guild that INSISTS you put an UGLY fabric in every quilt. It gives the quilt character & pizzaz, & they claim doesn't show up as UGLY anymore. Personally, I'm not a risk taker (see OCD note above) & don't even own ugly fabrics. :)

Brad, you didn't say how big you want the squares to be. With the dimensions you've given I guess you are looking for 6" squares? If you get fat quarters - those are the little pre-folded pieces of fabric you'll see stacked up in racks at Joann's or other fabric stores - you should be able to get 9 six inch squares from each one, if you cut carefully. The fat quarters are typically 18"x22". Or you can have the clerk cut 1/4th of a yard from a bolt and you can cut 7 six inch squares from that or get 3/8th of a yard so you'll be able to get 2 rows of 6" blocks. Rainbow colors are a fun idea, but don't hesitate to mix in some prints, especially small prints that look like solid colors when you step away from them. For brights and rainbow colors I would use gray or beige thread, like grammyp suggested. Those colors seem to disappear into the fabric; white and black are more noticeable. There are some great variegated threads that might be fun for you to use when you get to the quilting part. Don't be discouraged because you haven't gotten many offers of free fabric. We tend to buy what we need and then save the small scraps for scrappy quilts or the monthly lotto blocks. Or for exchanges where everyone sends in material for sharing and gets different fabrics back. For the cost of shipping, if you were going to reimburse the sender for that, you can go to Joann's and purchase several fat quarters especially when they have their 99 cent sale. And you can use the Joann's coupon for one of the fat quarter bundles that include 5 or 10 fat quarters in coordinating colors. That would be great for your project! Teresa, your scrappy samples are awesome. There are some quilts that this scrappy border is just so perfect for -- and it's so easy to make. This is a link to a wall hanging I did for my DH using this and I love the way it turned out. I deliberately tried to make it a little "wonky." It's a nice quilt. Everything will get better with time. Maybe you need to volunteer to quilt some quilts for Project Linus. One of the quilt shops here uses PL quilts for the newbies to learn to use the longarm. (They rent time on their quilting machines.) bkay

Vibrant & bright, the strong color against the stark white, wonderfully crisp effect.

Really nice. I love that pattern and you did a great job. Your workmanship is way better than mine. I always end up with blunt ends here and there.

Love your quilt and also mari fabrics, being married to a Finnish person I have her fabrics all over our house. I have the small blue poppies on my coffee table waiting to be cut out right now! The fabric from a little place called finn port starts at 35.00 a metre, but you have given me a great idea and a push to get moving. So thank you""". Again, your quilt is lovely.

I didn't realize Marimekko was Finnish. My best friend's family is very proud of their Finnish heritage. If their is another baby shower, I'll have to make a baby quilt with this fabric. TFS

I absolutely love Depression Block! It's so useful and adaptable. We've seen it in scrappy with white and with tan, done in just a couple colors but lots of different prints, in black/white combos and we're about to have it as a Lotto block in outrageous brights. Every time I see this block I think "Oh! That's the best use yet!" I'm not usually comfortable working in scrappy myself although I like other quilters scrappy projects, but this one inspires me to do this. It is the perfect project for making a couple quilt tops to have around when you need a quick gift and very adaptable to a male or female, young or old recipient. Lots of nice space for quilting too!

You did a great job on this, Lois, and made an extremely appealing quilt!

Thanks, everyone, for the comments. I have a question for you. This is the backing I found for the quilt. Several people to whom I have shown the top, my DH for one, don't think it is childish enough to give as a baby gift, even with the playful backing, especially for a boy. I've even considered having it quilted with a light orange or tan monkey panto. What do you think? It's only about 38"x46", so it's small for anything else.

Don't listen to them! Babies like strong contrasting colors. I think it's perfect and I like the backing with it. Go for it!

I love your use of the leftovers from the Marimekko scraps, combining them with the bright white really let the prints shine.

Before you spend too much (more) time agonizing over this backing fabric, make sure the dark colors don't shadow thru the white on the front. Layer a piece of batting between the quilt top and the batting and look carefully at the white. I now audition all backings this way -- I had a dark print on a light background backing show thru the white parts of the quilt top and it looked like dirty spots on the quilt. I have changed choices of backings a few times because of this.

I like the fabric for the backing if it is suitable. The fancy quilting will be lost on the back. I think the playful backing makes this quilt scream toddler -- not baby --- which I prefer, especial for a Boy.

We have such hard decisions to make as quilters!

I think it would work great for the back of a baby's quilt, because babies need contrasting colors to strengthen their eye sight as they grow.
