Kraftmaid - from dealer vs. Lowes - is there a difference?
Comments (17)Thanks so much for all of your replies. On the advice of kompy (thank you very much!), we did find a local dealer and we are working with them. Comparing apples to apples to all the cabs and design that Lowe's priced, they are about 8% more, BUT they also pointed out several flaws in the Lowe's design, such as how the molding they had stacked on top of the pantry would actually protude ever so slightly out from the wall, how one of the doors would not open all the way without binding and how the fridge & cabinets around it wouldn't allow the fridge doors to fully open! I definitely would not have been happy with that and I wouldn't have realized it until too late when everything was installed! They have also suggested some small design changes that I think really makes the whole layout better. And they are able to get items from Kraftmaid like wainscot panels for the island instead of sticking doors on it - which I think looks really nice! We haven't ordered yet, but I am very happy so far with the local dealer. Even though they are a bit more expensive, I think the expertise in kitchen layouts and the time they have spent with us going over everything is definitely worth it. billp1 - wow, that's a leap of faith ordering online from Kentucky and you're in NY! So glad everything went smoothly for you. bbell - I agree about the dealer making design suggestions and what to do or not to do. Just some small tweaks to the Lowe's design that were suggested by the dealer I think really has made the layout better (and actually, when we went into Lowe's we knew the basic design of what we wanted and they plugged in the measurements and cabinets, etc that fit in our measurements). And I do like that if there are any issues, then the dealer is the middle man to deal with Kraftmaid. Luckily I think we have found a local dealer who really cares about his clients and wants them to be happy with their new kitchen. He has been out to our house twice within the past week to take measurements, to demonstrate to us some of the issues w/ the Lowe's design and show us drawings with some design ideas. RICSFAN - we are planning to get cherry peppercorn too in the Montclair door style. What door style did you get? Are your cabinets installed yet? I would love to see pictures....See MoreDo not buy cabinets from Lowe's!!!
Comments (45)Dflood, I can only say I share your misery tonight! As we speak, I'm dousing myself with wine and plan to drown my jitters in a warm tub! We've purchased $13,000 worth of cabinets from Lowe's, ordered on Oct. 23. We did the demo with most of the work done by a son-in-law (a builder). He also put in our new floor. Our cabinets came last week, and the install mgr. (a very jovial fellow who didn't notice a thing) and the installer came out to inspect. Two uppers and two lowers came in at 21" wide instead of 18". They flank a 36" "hutch" with glass uppers. The 36" is std. depth (24") and the sides are 21" depth. Only problem is, now they are also 21" wide! The KD ordered them this size, so rather than try to wait another 3-4 wks., we make it work along our back wall. Tighter than we wanted, but will be OK. Today was the first day of install. We're moving the fridge into the next-door pantry, and have purchased a 21" pantry tower that's 90" tall to replace it (goes where the fridge was.) They ordered 3/4" by 6" wood filler to frame the pantry, to make the fridge look built-in. Only problem is, the filler is 4" too short on the sides, and none was ordered to go along the top. In addition, no scribes came, and the installer is blaming the Kd and vice-versa. I'm in the middle, and madder than a wet hornet. The installer wanted to try to "rig" it with skin to make it work, but I said no way. We're spending all this money, we'll do it right, even if I have to wait a few more weeks to have it finished. Of course, we can't start on the crown mould until the scribes are here. But to start off my morning, I got a call at 8 AM from our appliance dealer to say that they couldn't deliver them today - they'd ordered the wrong range. If I still wanted that model, it would be an additional $400 and another 2 weeks! Now, we ordered and paid for these on Oct. 28, went in several times to make sure everything was "on", and called a week ago to set up delivery. At that time, I re-checked the order and even said, "This is the dual-fuel range, right?" Oh yes, everything was waiting in the warehouse. Well, after getting nowhere with them, I ran out to several places and finally found one who had my range (Fridgidaire SS dual-fuel Pro Series) in stock, so I cancelled my entire order with the first company and ordered everything all over again from this place. Getting everything but the fridge, as we bought that several years ago. They're being delivered tomorrow (supposedly). Templating for the granite is scheduled for Friday, so I'm holding the installer to the fire to at least get the bases correct. Of course, today after installation of most of the cabs, I noticed that my pull-out pots and pans cab is 1/2" overlay, and all of the others are full overlay. So tomorrow, I'll have to point this out (like I'm sure he didn't notice!) and they'll have to re-order new doors. To finish my day, I looked at the sink base and thought, geez, this is small. It's a 33". I had it measured for a 36", but the installer changed it when he came out, said a 36" on the angled wall wouldn't work. I didn't realize this even happened! Anyway, my Ticor undermount sink now looks way too huge to ever fit here. I measured both, and they're the exact SAME size (from rim to rim of the sink and inside-inside of the cab.). I pointed this out to the installer, and he said he'd cut out the support bars that run front to back. OK, but it's still exactly the same measurements inside-inside. I called the granite fabricator, and was told they'd have to cut out some of the top of each side. They felt fairly confident it would work. Needless to say, I'm sure I won't sleep again tonight, or tomorrow night, or the next...... I have to say I've been lurking on this wonderful site for weeks now, just gathering advice, but I REALLY needed to vent tonight to some sympathetic ears. I keep telling myself, this will be over soon and you won't remember it. Sort of like childbirth. Right!...See MoreWhat did you spend on kitchen cabinets?
Comments (21)watchmelol, those are great suggestions. I am afraid it will consume a lot of my time to make sure everything fits. On a project that is already 6 months delayed, i dont believe my family can afford to wait to do this all by ourselves. cpartist, thank you! Based on the feedback i am getting here, i decided to remove the valance. One small thing? I'd move your prep sink over a bit more so it's not on the edge. Leave enough space so you can put stuff down on both sides. The sink is centered to the 54" x 54" double casement window and the center of the window is 5'7" from the wall, so we are sort of stuck with that we have. We do have the island too, so that helps. What is the base cabinet to the left of the cooktop? Also what is the base cabinet to the left of the fridge/freezer? To the left of the rangetop we have a base cabinet with e double roll out tray. To the left of the fridge/freezer have a simple base cabinet with a draw up top. Do you have enough storage for pots/pans, etc? Yes, we a pantry right next to the kitchen, on the fridge/freezer side of the wall. It is 5' X 7' in size, hopefully that will be enough to stow away bigger items that will be out of sight. Stan Z, my architect had originally drawn a soffit to account for the 1' deficit in cabinets. The difference in price between having stacked cabinets and having soffits was not that much(probably $2k) so we decided to go with it. When you're trying to save money $2k sounds like a lot, but my family liked the stacked cabinet look with glass on the top cabinet, so we just ran with it. The refrigerator/freezer combo is from Electrolox Icon(https://www.lowes.com/pd/Electrolux-Refrigerator-Trim-Kit/3535332?cm_mmc=SCE_PLA_ONLY--Appliances--SosAccessories-_-3535332:Electrolux&CAWELAID=&kpid=3535332&CAGPSPN=pla&k_clickID=55ab8032-9c96-4fdb-a3b9-7113ae56f920&gclid=CKC3qvH549QCFUtNfgodWgoBnQ). I saw it in one of the local stores here and it was the best bang for the the fridge buck we found on the market. Carolina Kitchen & Bath, very reassuring to hear. Thank you for sharing. I read somewhere that that Schuler are the gold line of Medallion cabinets, not sure how accurate that is. After giving it more thought, I also have decided to remove the cabinet hood and replace it with a Broan 42" hood with an exterior blower(1200 CFM) attached. The inset hood inside the cabinet was not very practical and was less deep and had less capture area. Especially because we are using a Capital Culinarian which has high BTU output. My kitchen designer is going to make these changes to the design and will get back to me end of day today. Lowe's is having a great 20% off sale going on right now with a 10% gift card, will probably take advantage of it this July4th weekend....See MoreHome Depot/Lowe’s kitchen cabinets?
Comments (11)A couple more thoughts about our kitchen renovation I posted pictures of above (it was a complete gut as we were working with an original 1915 kitchen that had a few horrible modifications. We got solid wood cherry cabinets (I believe they were Kraftmaid off the top of my head) including soft close, lazy Susan corner cabinet, but no slide outs. For all of the cabinets, the GE oven/range and microwave, the Kohler sink, the faucet, and the knobs and pulls...we paid about 4k total. Since budget was a concern for us and we were fine using "middle-end" brands, it was worth it for us to use Home Depot. We did order everything during a big sale and it was 7 years ago, but it was much less than estimates at some smaller local places we checked out, although it was probably for higher end products. And it was a lot less than my mom was able to get as well (she's a designer)....See MoreUser
