Can you help me find a bed like this for my son?

My 14 year old son is too tall for the full size trundle bed that he's had since he was three so we're replacing it with a queen. His current furniture is high quality and still in near perfect condition so we'll keep all of the other pieces. Rather than trying to match the medium brown stain, we're looking for something darker to contrast. My son would really prefer a black wood bed and I'd like to accommodate his wishes, if possible.

He and I really liked this bed but it is only available in the color shown....

Do you have any ideas of where I might find something similar in black?

Do a search in google for black slatted headboard. You'll find a couple...some have the slats without the curve, some have the curve but with fewer slats....

This is really a nice bed, that look's nice, just do a goggle search you will come to know many links from where you can get bed's such like this, hope so plenty of nice beds you will get their.

There are pluses and minuses. I have slept in '80s brass beds, 1880s brass beds, and a more modern wrought iron bed. Here are some things to think about. - Metal beds originally became popular as a precaution against bedbugs. Bedbugs hide in wood furniture, so if you get an infestation simply replacing the mattress won't suffice. For most of my life, bedbugs were a quaint old affliction remembered only in good-night sayings. However, they are now back in a big way. If you travel at all, your luggage can carry bedbugs from a hotel (even a very nice hotel) right back to your own bed. If so, you may have to treat or replace the mattress but at least your bed will be easy to sanitize. - You need to plan out where your head goes. Banging your skull on metal is unpleasant. That means you need good-sized pillows for sleeping and extra fluffage for reading. And yes, pillows do have a tendency to slip behind the bed. - I found it pleasant to touch the cool metal with my hands when I was warm in bed. It sounds like nothing, but it actually made a difference in comfort . - By all means get a well-made bed if you go metal. Cheap metal beds flex and move and bend even more than cheap wooden ones. A poorly made bed will make you feel like you are sleeping in a lifeboat on open seas.

I don't know if there's a dealer near you, but The Bedworks of Maine has pretty much what you want. I think the "Yarmouth" or "Freeport" are probably just about right. The trundle is purchased separately, see under "bedroom furniture". The furniture is very sturdy, made in Maine instead of China, and well priced.

From your post, it sounds like you have a real problem on your hands. I assume you have already considered and had him tested for drug and alcohol use--while I hope not, it could be a factor here (and sadly, if he's as depressed as he sounds, if it isn't yet, substance abuse could be right around the corner for him). He definitely needs some interests. Sports would be good if he's inclined. Music or dance, if his interests lean that direction. How about something like learning how to animate cartoons--DD loved doing that some years back. Volunteering is a great idea--about half the 'candy-stripers' at the hospital when my daughter was in high school and voluteered were guys (they weren't called candy stripers and had MUCH better uniforms to wear than the poor girls did). How about getting him involved in raising seeing eye puppies--check with your county 4-H on that one, they usually run those programs. Or perhaps some Saturday classes at the local college--many offer programs for high school students. A parttime job might even be a good idea if he can find one at his age--something like working in an ice cream parlor, perhaps--for a teenager, money is tangible evidence of his worth. I think at this point, it would be a good idea to look for some interests outside of school for him--once he starts to feel better about himself, he may find he can deal better with the pressures at school. I wouldn't give up on the couselling--do your research first. Interview several counsellors and find one who seems to understand your problem and who can come up with a plan. Maybe if you persevere, after a few sessions, he'll feel comfortable enough to open up. Let's face it--it's pretty hard for most of us adults to tell our problems to an outsider on the first or second meeting, so give him a little time. I'm sure you've also been frequent visitors to his guidance counselor, teachers, etc. Have you considered changing schools? Perhaps a vocational high school, where he can learn practical talents might be both more interesting and more useful to him. You're certainly right to be concerned--you want him to live up to his potential, not throw away his teen age years, then wake up in his 20's finding he has no preparation for a job, life.... in the first picture, the black seeds with the white are purple lablab purpureus. I think the yellow of the same shape are white lablab purpureus. the red pinto bean looking beans are obviously also a bean family but is it pinto? Do not know. Could also be bush bean. the second picture I do not know.

I can't help you find it but I suggest ordering just a headboard and no footboard. My husband is tall and is much happier in a footboard free bed. Since your son is only 14 and has years of growing yet to do, no footboard will give him more room for whatever is final height might be.

I see headboards like that a lot on my craigslist...you might check yours. You could get any finish and then paint it black, which would be fairly easy.

Agree in regard to ordering just headboard. No telling how tall he will get.

Another option to consider is a iron/metal bed, although I really like the bed you posted.

We have a similar bed and I can't tell you how many times I've bumped into that flared footboard with my thighs. It hurts!

Here's a whole page of them, I'm particularly taken with the black leather surrounded by wood trim. I don't know of a guy who wouldn't like that. A padded headboard is so much more comfy and leather is easy to maintain. I agree no foot board. We're all tall and never use them and it's easier to make a bed.

Thanks so much for the excellent suggestions and the links! It looks like we'll have some good options online. When we narrow it down to a few contenders I may be back to get some input. With headboards tending to be taller these days, we also have to consider that my son has a full size basketball hoop mounted above his bed and the backboard starts just 58" above the floor. I thought that he might be ready to take that down but apparently not(!)

That's a good point about the footboard being an issue as he gets ever taller, not to mention the bruises that it could inflict. I like the finished look that it gives so we may lean toward something that has a footboard that is lower than the (top of the) mattress.
