Fabric shopping/ Walmart

Well, I was shopping for eggs and bagels but hey we just got this new SUPER Walmart and of course I had to check out the crafty section. They had pink!!! So I got the material or most of it for my Pretty in Pink Challenge. Last night I picked up my newest Quiltmaker magazine and there it was; the pattern I knew I would use for the Pretty in Pink. All I have to do now is get the other ten things done on the list first! Of course I could wash this fabric and maybe drop a few "other" things... I may just get to work on this project this weekend.

Got to go now and see if those girls left anything in the washer!

Our Walmart stores here in Canada - here in the Montreal area anyways.....but at least once a month I get to skip across the border and visit the Walmart in NY state - and there I can find a few items - because they have a large fabric section - it's an anormous Super store open 24/7.....
I then get a chance to visit a little quilt store there - the stores here are not very plentiful - but realy, really expensive.......
I actually placed an order yesterday from CONNECTING THREADS so see what their delivery to Canada will be like - are you familar with them - I love everything that they have - and their prices seem very, very reasonable.

I live in a small town in Southern Utah. Fabric is 30 minutes away at Walmart, ACE hardware or the $$$quilt shop. Some times I drive the hour and a half to go to Joanns, Micheals crafts and Ben Franklins. I make a day of it. I also make sure to stop at 31 flavors ice cream. :) Have fun with your Pretty in Pink project. I don't know about ordering at Connecting Threads. I have ordered from eQuilter and liked the service, $ , the quality and fabric selection.

Our town has 3 walmarts, two are SuperWM. I haven't been to one of them for some time, since I live smack inbetween the other two. One has a limited fabric section, and I've noticed that it's getting smaller and smaller, and being taken over more by the home decor section. The other one has a pretty good size area, still has plenty of patterns to chose from, and any time I go there, it's always got shoppers. The 3rd one (the 1st in town) had a better notions and craft area, but as I said, I haven't been there in a while. I DID notice that all of our WMs are going 'high end'. They're carrying more Pier One and Target style stuff, and the prices reflect that. WM used to be where you could buy cheap stuff, but now I find that I can go to Target and get better deals on NICER stuff. From my experience, it does no good whatsoever to write to WM and complain. They're the biggest retailer, they won't kowtow to the 'little guy'...and I don't think they look too much at their demographics. At least in my area, they're trying to bring in organic foods, and trendy stuff, but the people who can afford those things already go to the boutique shops or local grocery stores, they'd NEVER set foot in WM. And most of the WM shoppers don't have those kinds of 'sophisticated' tastes. (Do not mean to offend anyone, it's that my town is either high end or not...no middle ground!) Luckily for us here, we've got many choices for fabrics...2 Joannes, a half dozen quilt shops, a craft world with a huge fabric area, I could go on...and we're an hours drive from Portland, where you find even better deals. I also have a great local store for fabric right down the street, and it carries home decor fabric lengths and often has great sales. I am sorry for the folks that WM is the best choice for one-stop shopping, and the only real source for shopping...when they pull tricks like this. They must figure people will take what they can get when they're the monopoly in town.

I bought 4 of those Lights of America (4 foot 2-tube white fluorescents) @~$7.50 a few weeks ago to expand my indoor garden. They have the white ends. One failed last week, presumably the ballast, and when I returned it the price had jumped to $8.32. A second one failed today. I can't blame Walmart, they do stand behind everything they sell, but someone is sending them really shoddy merchandise. Incidentally I have not been able to get TV Channels 4 or 5 for some weeks: 90% washed-out by static, no sound at all on channel 4. Could the fluorescents (5 walmart now, 2 home depot cheapies) be doing that? I'm in controlled housing, and only allowed an indoor antenna since about 2 months ago. I've tried 3 so far. None receive those channels adequately, although the stations are less than 10 miles away.( P.S. When Lights of America first came out with the circline fluorescents in the 1980's I switched over completely. In all that time I have only had 2 burn out, and those during the past 12 months. Wot Hoppen?

It doesn't surprise me they raised the price. I always thought their prices were on the lower end anyways and that's when I'd buy fabric. If you look, they really do have some nice regular and seasonal fabric. This past summer I found the most beautiful bird fabric with green leaves all over and a matching large panel with birds. I think it's the most beautiful fabric I'd ever seen and that's one reason I bought it. It surprised me I got it at Walmart. The gal was telling me one lady came in and ordered 18 "bolts" of it. Yeah, even if they raised it 50 cents, I still think it's nice fabric at a good price. Sal

Fabric departments require customer assistance to cut and measure and mark material. If you look at their meat cases in the super stores, the meats are not cut in store, but come pre-packaged from the processor. It's cost effective to cut work forces as much as possible. I suppose box stores consider the decision to keep a labour intensive department based more on how much business they'll lose if they shut one, than how much their customers complain. The ironic thing is I suspect they'd be more likely to keep the department open if there is a competing box nearby. If there isn't, then they know they got you coming back, fabric department or not.

I seldom venture in that store for personal reasons, but last night, working from dawn to dusk like I have been, it was the only place open at ten p.m. and I absolutely had to have copy paper for my printer, done without for a week.

Of course I had to sashay past the fabric and craft department. I saw stickers on some wonderful calicoes for one and two dollars, and I had to turn and run fast the other way, because I almost broke down and bought yardage to add to the stash I am already housing in huge bins stacked one atop the other. It was a very, very close call.

Hi everyone...
Well, I was across the border and visited the WALMART store in upstate NY today - OH MY....what to know what damage I did....but it's not my fault - there are such great prices on the cottons at Walmart in the U.S. compared to what we can find in Canada......I came back with bags and bags..just added up my quantites - 108 Yards...YEP...that's one hundered and 8 yards....you'd think I was getting ready for the dessert island..guess I should start looking for a solar powered machine next....but I AM SO HAPPY!!!! I have them all rolled back on the cardboard cores (which the lady happily gave me because I bought the balances on most of these items....)..As you get to know me - you'll find out that I'm a giant fabricolic.....I believe in having a big stash....not that I don't already have one....

I could probably use good medicaton at any given time... ...but today I'm like a pig in mud...WOW!! Great buys - fun fabrics..and my stash is lookin better all the time.....bring on the blocks....

I'm surprised that so many of your Walmarts have fabric. Of the 7 stores within an hour's drive of me, only 3 still have fabric. I sure wish Walmart hadn't made such a crazy decision to close some of their fabric departments.

Bill, I'm about 4 hours south of you in the Albany, NY area. I do a lot of my shopping online, and personally love Connecting Threads. Their fabric is nice, shipping is quick, and their customer service is superb. Another website I like is Thousands of Bolts. Reasonable prices and great customer service.

My fabric collection spans several 5 tier shelving units in almost every room in my home. It sure is a fun addiction!

Bill, I too feel your pain. We don't have too many quilting fabric stores up here, and the ones we do have are SO INCREDIBLY EXPENSIVE I can barely bring myself to buy very much at a time. Beautiful fabric, but so pricey.

I use to live in Los Angels, CA. I got spoiled there with all the different fabric stores. The problem was that it would take 45-60 minutes to go 15 miles. I don't miss the traffic. My choices might be limited here in this small town in Southern Utah but the scenery and quite make up for it.
