Hayward air relief valve leaking

Anyone out there ever cracked open a manual air relief valve for a Hayward Pro grid DE? I don't see how it might come apart. Mine's leaking and I don't want to spend a hundred bucks for a new one. Thanks

I'ts leaking from under the top lid. The manual bleed valve is located on the side on mine. Opposite side from the pressure gauge. The protective filter material that covers the "ping pong ball" inside is history. I tried to remove the cage that houses the ball but it won't budge. Pulled one of the two clips that appear to hold it in. It promptly snapped off. Even with that missing, the cage isn't moving. the "O" ring inside that the ball seals on appears to be OK. The leak is just a trickle, but it's kind of irritating. Thanks

OK, took the belt off after cleaning all the contacts inside and it runs fine. Put the belt back on and the first cycle filled the tank and shut off. Blew air out and when it started the second time it did the same thing, but I noticed the back of the motor was hot so I blew air on it for a while and tryed again,. This time it started and mad a clicking sound and I could see arching through the motor, finally it blew the breaker and a puff of smoke came out of the motor. Time to buy a new motor, how much time can one person put in on a project before going crazy. Thanks for all you help, i'll let you know how I make out. Roger

"Thermal expansion tanks do not have a great history of longevity either, and create a 'dead end' in the potable water system". There are far more posts on this forum regarding failed PRVs than failed expansion tanks. Expansion tanks are easily checked for correct operation and easily replaced if necessary and without shutting off the water to the house IF they were installed properly with a shut-off valve. Expansion tanks are no more of a dead end in the potable water system than an unused hose bib. The expansion tank in my home was installed in 1995 and is still operating while in that same time period my PRV has been replaced three times. With respect, I agree to disagree and as I said... "you use the PRV with bypass in your house and I'll stick with the tried and true and simpler solution".

What you are describing is the air relief valve found on the top of all cartridge filters (and some sand). The standard operating position for this is to be closed completely with no leaking water. When you prime the system you would bleed out the air from here and then close it. No need to leave it cracked open. If the pool system is allowing air back into the lines then this is an indication that the plumbing system has a problem. It could be a teeny tiny problem like a leak at the suction side threaded adapter on your pump...or it could be a leak at the connection underside the pool skimmer. Either way, the current pool owners are aware of this problem as it has manifested itself with the system losing prime / taking in air. They resolved this problem with the turn of a know allowing water (and air) to slowly escape the system via the bleeder valve. In this situation I would monitor the system after closing this valve to see if any problems develop shortly afterwards. A pool plumbing system is a closed look system and should not leak air or water anywhere.

I think mine is a little older. The second pic is what I termed the manual bleed valve (cock valve). It's located on the side (not the top). My top is a plain cap. The leak is from under that cap. Thanks again.

Please post a pic. What you are describing doesn't match what I would expect.

Did you ever receive a final answer about the leaking Air Relief Valve? I have the same style that you described and mine is also leaking.
