Making American Olean subway tile look handmade

In our previous home, we used American Olean 3x6 tiles as a backsplash. The tile installer offered to "make them look handmade" by installing a certain way. I have now moved to another state and would like to repeat the application. Any idea of how this installation was done or how I could explain this to a new tile installer.

I am remodeling the family/kids bathroom, which is a small (5.5' x 8') full bath. We want to use hex tile on the floor, with subway tiles on the walls. It looks like I will be choosing between the American Olean glazed ceramic Satinglo Hex tiles which have a little bit of a matte finish, or the Merola Old World porcelain unglazed "raw" tiles. Does anybody have any suggestions as which would be better?

If the shower pan is properly prepared, and the tile is properly set, and you don't drop glass shampoo bottles on it, then it should be fine for a shower.

It's very rare anymore that you can find seconds ANYWHERE, and if you do, they'll be very clearly labeled as such to cut off any chance of warranty claim afterward. The tile Lowes and HD is every bit as good as what you'll get from a showroom. However, I've found many times (and advise my customers based on this) that they'll have tile for cheaper than I can get it at contractor's pricing from the warehouse, only because they buy in greater bulk, and therefore get better pricing directly from the factory, and in so doing, can afford to sell it at a much lower price, and still make money on it. Now, this is not ALWAYS. But on some lines, such as the subway tiles that are extremely popular for both bathrooms and kitchen backsplashes right now, where big quanitities of tile are moving, iit's not surprising.

Hi Atelier! The horus samples arrived today!! Wow are they gorgeous!!! Both DH and I loved the cristalli the most. Love the uneven lines and the gorgeous crackle. Unfortunately, the lightest of the whites isn't white enough. It's practically identical to my soft white shiloh cabinets, and i dont expect that will change even when they are up on the walls. I think we will likely go with the Horus broadway in latte. The color is perfect. Will still have to track down a Cobsa in a soft white but I think it will be hard to beat $7.50/sq ft Any other suggestions to check out? Cannot thank you enough for your help!!!

In that case, he set the tiles slightly skewed in various directions, with varying grout gaps to give the illusion of being of slightly different sizes,

Then he "raked" the joints (scraped the grout out a bit) so the grout is not even with the top edge of the tiles.

I don't think a deliberately bad install job fools anyone to thinking you are using handmade tile.

Um, no it doesn't. Not to anyone who knows tile. Ditto what holly said.

You liked the previous install so I'm sorry to criticize, but with handmade tile you have irregular rectangles with an attempt at regular spacing. Your previous install was regular rectangles with an attempt at random irregular spacing.

In the image you link to, there is lippage, a cupping of the tiles that occurs during firing. You can't mimic that. Even an untrained eye will spot machine manufactured sameness of the tiles, no matter how odd the installation.

If you're installing perfect tile, do it right. If you want handmade tile, install a few pieces as a feature in your bs.

Sounds like I didn't do justice to my previous tile installer. Here I was assuming, and complaining about, that my tiles were just a bad tiling job while he was trying to achieve a hand-made tile look :)
I'd have the tiles installed the way they are intended.
