A few questions about planting cover crop in zone 5
Comments (8)I have grown a cover crop or I have covered the garden bed with shredded leaves, but never both at the same time. Sometimes a few leaves will get trapped in the cover crop but that is not the same as laying down 6 to 8 inches of leaves which would smother any cover crop you are growing. The leaves will have a Carbon to Nitrogen ratio of between 40 and 80 to 1, almost adequate to promote proper composting. When I have plunked down a goodly amount of leaves on the clay soils of NW Indiana and SE Ohio, shredded and unshredded, over the winter we found the soil the following spring to be more workable and that plants grew better with only a small amount of compost added, much less then the previous year when no leaves were added. If this new plot is now ready for planting I would seed Buckwheat which will be ready to cut by the time the leaves start to fall and then cover that cut Buckwheat and the soil with the leaves for the winter....See MoreQuestions about Edible Cover Crops/Green Manure
Comments (3)I also have clay soil. Clay and limestone. It's been a process trying to amend with compost. I picked up 10 yards this past spring that I got on sale ($20/yd). That's a large expense to try on an annual basis and am attempting to grow cover crops this year. I'm growing fava bean, hulless oats, crimson clover, and hairy vetch. I would love it if I could improve my soil by next spring this way. If anyone has experience with growing cover crops in clay hopefully they'll share some experience with us. I want to start on my front yard next and would love if I could just throw seeds out and have everything grow without any more intervention from me but my guess would be that tilling might be a minimum requirement for getting the cover crops started....See MoreAbout duvet covers.....
Comments (22)Our down duvet sometimes gets bunched up inside of the duvet cover precisely because it does not have those ties on the ends. Either I or the housekeeper fixes it. This year, the housekeeper wasn't there for a week while I was in FL and DH was in PA. He contacted me, very confused, about what to do about the bunched up cover. The concept of holding it in the corners and shaking it so it redistributes was apparently a difficult one. Who knew. Also, when I first got Molly puppy and she was like 12 weeks old, she crawled inside of the duvet cover because she thought it looked very cozy. She was quite concerned when she could not find her way out!...See MoreQuestion about window covering in kitchen
Comments (5)Design Girl, we have done a lot of renovations. The fluorescent light in the kitchen has been replaced with LED. The cabinets were painted white and have chrome pulls like these now. (Both choices were less expensive and since we are topping out at $75K for our renovations we had to cut back some things like a complete kitchen gut reno because of taking care of necessary safety issues with other things.) The counters and backsplash are the same. The faucet is new. The flooring is LVP and is white with some grayish in it. Unfortunately, Linda, privacy is an issue. I will live here alone and am not comfortable have uncovered windows anywhere. While it is quite safe I tend to freak out at the thought of "what is out there" after dark when I have a lot of lights on....See Moreyayagal
