Stagger Heights? Hold Out for New Hood? Both? Neither?
Comments (5)Ahhh so that's why you can get those open cabinets and why a chimney hood would be so expensive. But Hmmm. Depending on the hood style, you might be able to vent the same way and have a fake chimney (preferably one you could store things in. Sorry. I have a few small kitchen hangups!). So the glass ones probably wouldn't work but the stainless ones might. At minimum, I do think you need some more interesting glass. I wonder if it would make a good impact to retrofit ALL the uppers in glass. Moving cabinets scares me, so I'll leave stagger questions to more knowledgeable folks. So this is a bump, with picture!...See MoreStaggered Cabinet Height?
Comments (10)weedyacres, I love your cabinets and I'm not a fan of painted wood. I agree with the philosophical question - I've cleaned the tops of my cabinets 3 times in almost 2 years, 1) After construction 2) after retaping, mudding, sanding and painting all the ceilings downstairs (6 months after the 1st cleaning) and 3) app. a year after 2nd cleaning when I was standing on countertops holding up pieces of crown and saw how yucky they were. Not as yucky as first 2 times, so I think once we're done with construction (another year?) I could easily go a year b/t cleanings. About the belly button - we've got the same thing with recessed lights. There is a screw in the can to adjust the height of the socket above the ceiling - the light above your range hood is an "outie" LOL....See Morecrown molding on cabs of staggered height
Comments (17)Thanks annettacm, for your response. Yes, it would keep the dust from accumulating. I came across your before and after pictures last night, and your floor plan looks very similar to mine. I love how you opened up the dining room and incorporate all the space. Hmmmm (I can't go there - I told my DH I would not move any walls!) Back to my crown molding questions. I want to be sure that the different heights look in proportion, so I think I just need to be careful that the trim extension/filler on the 48" doesn't get too big/tall (the KD is telling me 2-3"). Does anyone think the heights look out of proportion if 48" cabs have that 2-3" filler trim piece and the 42" cabs don't? It adds expense and I'd rather save some dollars there if it would look fine and in proporation without. Thanks everyone!...See MoreAny photos of staggered height wall cabinets that extend lower?
Comments (23)We are exploring another option- seeing as there are some challenges to making a pantry in the kitchen itself happen, we are crossing our fingers that we can "borrow space" from the laundry closet area, which is opposite of the kitchen (near the opening of the "U"). The only problem is that there is a hot water heater that needs access so we will see if our contractor can come up with a clever idea how to manage that. There is a good 3 feet of space next to the washer and dryer between it and the hot water heater where we could have either a pantry closet made of walls and shelves or a pantry cabinet inserted into the space. We would have to re-wall in the present door opening and get smaller doors to fit another pantry door next to it, but I think it can be done if we can figure out how to not hide the hot water heater or at least have access to it if repairs or replacement is needed. If that is impossible we are back at square one and fitting a pantry into the kitchen proper- hopefully I will get measurements soon so I don't have to guess dimensions based on tile size, etc :-)...See Morechiefneil
