Question about decking on Wilkes pool deck issue

We have a 13yo Wilkes pool (above ground) - a couple years ago the coating on the decking began to bubble, then peel. Currently, we have about 1/3 of the deck peeled. Where it peeled, it has left a sticky residue.

Questions are:

1. What should use to remove residue?

2. What do you suggest for covering the deck? (Marine paint, etc.)

We did contact our pool company because the decks were warranteed when this happened, but it's a pro-rated waranty, and it was going to cost $5k to fix (replace, I believe) the decks. We figured if we are going to spend 5k, it would be towards a new pool. So, we are just trying to get a few more years out of it without it looking horrible until we can figure out how we are going to replace it.

Lynne, what type of decking is this? Some more info and some pics would help alot help. The folks here can give some great advice that may save you thousands.

It's taken me a while to get back to the computer! The decking is the type that comes with a Wilkes pool. It's wood covered by some type of textured vinyl. The vinyl is peeling off. I have included some pictures.

There are upgrades to the knock-down, acrylic and cement mixes such as pigments added to the cement mix so the color goes all of the way through the material instead of just 'being on top'. Pricing can also be changed depending on the type of sealer that is used on the knock down finish. A solvent based sealer is one of the least expensive but if it is an acrylic, it will need to be resealed often. A two part water based polyurethane is more expensive but will last ten times longer than a water/solvent based acrylic. I agree with the others, the cement/acrylic mix is very basic... the longevity of the product depends highly on the prep and installation...

Your roof top deck has plenty of clearance,most of mine have the width of the stringers 1 1/2''. I would sugest using counstruction adhesive as well as SS screws be very sure the screws do not go thru the stringers be very sure as well during install you dont damage the roof...like hiting it with the edge of a board,droping a drill bit first on it,steping on a screw things like that. Your right if your going to use anything on it use the S American lumber not manmade material. With your pool deck provide cross ventalation. This can be done with screen vents in the framing if this is not completly possible install floor vents in the decking combined with the frame vents. Cross ventalation is a vastley over looked but much needed addtion to any decking project. The gap between the decking boards will have no effect one way or the other venting your project unless there is air moving under it. If possble a drain system under the pool deck might help if done corectley but do not put a ground cover like plastic sheet/tar paper under it 1'' ipe will react the same way 3/4'' ipe will under the same conditions. The life span of both is also the same. J.

Hi I'm new hear, sorry if redundant questions-- building new pool-- problems with new acid washed concrete deck - very rough crumbling concrete on some edges and joints. Looks like the trowel was dragged over when too dry--- looks like i can grind them down smooth with wire brush--- or something like that --- ? - color is very uneven--- looks like muratic acid just poured on without good brushing--- allot of sand pebbles in some places and pure paint visible in others--- Will a concrete polisher make this more even? I don't want to acid wash again, unless very mild. - large slope in some areas--- what is the standard for decks? I have so much slope that it catches the eye--? - Color stinks--- I know, it is hard to predict--- but asked specifically to avoid pinkish colors--- used mocha colored concrete, which litened to pinkish brown. - no joint against house foundation. i was told that there is supposed to be a joint between house and concrete, but often this is not included-- comments? THANKS!

Do the drywall forms used for the gunite stage need to be removed before decking or is it okay to backfill and leave them in place? I would think it should all be taken out but have heard that it gets buried?

How about stripping off the old vinyl, sand it smooth, replace any plywood as needed, and using a couple coats of exterior house paint?

Hi Scott,

Yeah, I thought of that, but we sanded off sticky residue on a sub floor once, and it totally gummed up the sander. This residue stays moist due to the heat and water it is exposed to. DH said scrape it, but I am afraid of doing damage to the wood. I was hoping someone might have had some experience in a product or chemical that would remove the glue.

Regarding the latex paint - I am thinking it won't hold up with all the moisture. Whatever we do, I really don't want to have to be doing it again the next year. I'd like it to last a few years.

I told DH that I just want to put peel and stick vinyl tile over it - I was thinking we could even put it over the glue since we want it sticky anyway. And, I was thinking we wouldn't even have to remove the other vinyl. The only thing is that the deck is only 21" wide, and most tiles are 12" square, so we would end up having to purchase twice the amount of tile to cover it.

Just wondering Lynne, did you replace/repair the vinyl? We actually just bought a pool with a deck that needs to be fixed as well. Wondering what your solution was and if it worked??

We have the same problem with our wilkes decking. My husband is thinking astro turf but I don't like that idea. Thinking it would hold too much moisture.I am thinking maybe linoleum or maybe even ceramic tile. peel and stick may work and even though you'd have to buy more tiles

I have a friend who bought a home with a pool very similar to this. Its not a Wilkes, but it is a fiberglass pool shell built into a raised deck against the back of the house. It had non slip heavily textured vinyl on the decking. It was old and cracked, he replaced it with light colored outdoor carpet, much denser than astro turf and it looks great and drains well.

I had this exact problem with a Gibraltar/Wilkes pool. I manually ripped up as much of the damaged vinyl as possible. I then installed a light-colored outdoor carpeting on the entire thing. It looks great, was (relatively) inexpensive and drains the water fairly well.

My Gibraltar pool did the same thing and the vinyl did not come off well. It was spotty and sticky like yours. Gibraltar only wants to sell new pools. Try looking underneath the decking and you will see the deck is screwed to metal crossmembers. I removed the screws and turned the boards over, then painted them with a quality pool paint, (white). That was four years ago and it still looks good. Lot of physical work with 2 people buy it worked. I would doubt that Wilkes vinyl coated both sides of your pool deck boards. Good luck, Ed

The pool ended up weakening in one area and then collapsing. My husband didn't want to get another pool, but I did. I found a used one and had it uninstalled, moved, and reinstalled. It was newer (with the aluminum decking) and bigger. We've enjoyed it going on 8 years now.
