Problem with PebbleTec Installation...Water in Pool?

Geez, it looked like it was going perfectly. PebbleTec guys were at my house at 6:30 this morning, gone by 10 (which I think is super fast for a 25K gallon pool), but when the PebbleTec crews quality control guy came around abough 45 minutes after they left he was surprised they were gone so soon. Then he was mad that they left so much haze on my tile (but I figured it was no big deal since they're acid washing tomorrow), and that there was a silver dollar sized glop that somehow had fallen from my skimmer onto the deep end floor. All in all no biggie.

Until...I asked him if we didn't have to put the pump in the drain anymore? There was water under my pool (we're near a lake) and the pool crew (different guys who did tile, prep, coping) had kept the pump running 24/7 to keep the water out of the pool. I said that it was running this morning when the PebbleTec guys came, did we no longer need it even though there was water under the pool (they had put a plug in during pebble installation). He look ed at me and said "There's water under your pool? Let me check the plug," and when he pulled out the plug in the drain it was like a bathtub faucet flowing into my pool. We ran and got the pump in, and now I need to leave it on again (that's fine).

But am I going to get a weird color ring, discoloration where all this water came back into my pool, and then slooooowly drained out through the pump? After all we are spending, I will be so mad if I have a color issue because they didn't put the pump back the way they were supposed to.

The man told me the pool could have cracked if he hadn't come by to pull the plug, because we had 6" of water flow in the pool after just 4 hours of it being plugged up.

He said the color should be fine, that sometimes it rains after an application and there's a pool of water at the bottom of the pool when they come to acid wash, and it doesn't affect the color?

Thoughts? Any PBs out there care to chime in?

And do I need to worry about there being water under my pool? Will it ruin my gunite or rust my rebar? The pool is 30 years old, was here when we bought the house.

I'm sorry that I can't offer any advice for your problem, but I can't wait to see the pictures of your finish. I hope all is well and that you like the results.

Relax, it will be fine. We had ours done last month. As soon as they left it rained cats and dogs and we had dirty ground water come up through the drain...about 6 inches. I pumped it out myself because I was worried. It left a horrible looking ring, I was so worried the next morning when it was still there and looked worse. Then they acid washed and it disappeared. Our finish looked smooth and uniform. You will be amazed by the acid wash. We have been filled now almost a month...everything looks great.

My wife and I were in the same predicament over choosing the color for our pool also. We wanted a blue but didn't want any green shade to the water . We were happy with the "blueness" of Blue Granite but like yourself we didn't care for the rather dull or grayish look in shallow water. We ended up choosing Midnight Blue PS and couldn't be happier. we actually have Sandy Beach in our beach entry for the first 15' of the ramp down, and while we were already paying the upcharge for two diferent colors of pebble application, We had them do our entire spa in Sandy Beach PS as well as we felt the sandy beach pebble looks great in shallow water, at least better than any of the darker pebble choices. We too have the Oklahoma flagstone and I think the Midnight Blue and Oklahoma compliment each other nicely.good luck with your project.

Update: Holes in the spa are looking much better. Service guy came out today and worked on them again. I think the end result when finished will be great. My concern would be will the fix chip off later since it is not the original finish. Steps are so much better. First, because I started buffing them MYSELF today with the buffing pad they left my husband the first day my pool was supposed to be "buffed" as advertised. Anyway, the installer came out today and started "buffing" them more...they needed it. There is a huge difference between a buffed area and a non-buffed area in your pool even if the installer of PT tries to tell you it is smooth enough. The steps are a slightly different color because they were redone. The only thing that I am not sure how to fix is the deep end....the finish there looked amazing the first time. After they drained the pool to redo the steps, and the pool is now filled up and balanced, the deep end looks splotchy. I repeatedly raised concerns about them leaving crappy, non-chemically balanced, stagnant water sitting in the deep end and in the spa in the hot sun for 2 days while they worked to correct the steps. I was told not to worry...well now I am very worried. We were told today to let the pool cure....I don't buy that BS....the deep end looked perfect after the initial fill and through 3 days of meticulously brushing and keeping the chems balanced. They let the spa sit stagnant and partially drained my pool. All kinds of crap was sitting in that nasty water.

Poolexpert, thanks for your post.....I didnt want to drain the pool to determine IF there is a problem. I know pebble tec guarantees there product, thats not my issue, I am just hoping what we feel is just "normal". But you made me a little nervous when you said they guarantee the quality not application....they prepped and applied, I would think this would be covered, if there is a problem. I have to address the issue when we return from vacation. Its not the sides of the pool but the bottom where it meets the side....its a very rounded area, not a 45...so it feels like the problem (if there is one, extends from that edge out into the pool....about 1 to 2 feet. I noticed this odd vibration/feeling all over, but not everywhere and of course I cant really check the deep end, thats why I am hoping its normal, not the finish. If it didnt adhere...what will eventually happen. Wont the water pressure keep the pebble tec in place. They put a dark gray bonding agent all over the pool 2 days before they installed. Doesnt a bonding agent go on just before you adhere cement? Maybe this was a different product. It was a question my husband had when he came home the night after they prepped. Do you install pebble tec? If so, is this a very rare problem, so I am probably imagining it.

Our previous pool had Pebble Tec (Tahoe Blue). It was nice. It was a good fit for the more natural look of the pool. After about 6-7 years, it was starting to show some bald spots. I didn't mind the rough feel, but the kids did end up with bloody feet on occasion. The one thing I always noticed was a bit of green in the color, so I felt the name was a bit misleading. In the new pool, with almost insistence by our PB, we went with Diamond Brite (Midnight Blue). After seeing it in another pool, I knew that was what we were going with. Once again, the name of the color is a bit misleading. It is far from "midnight" and really more of a sky blue. It looks amazing in full sun, and not too dark in the shade/dark. Having lived with it since March, I'm 100% satisfied with the choice. Despite the DB aggregate not being fully exposed yet, I love it. There are some splotchy areas, and the install was not done to my level of expectation, but we're still very happy. We plan to do an acid bath once the temps drop and hopefully that will even things out a bit. Only time will tell how the DB holds up, but I see little to no blue plaster when backwashing compared to the Pebble in the previous pool. It is much less rough than the Pebble tec and in our case, I feel it goes with the look we were trying to achieve. Midnight Blue Diamondbrite is a very unique color and I had a hard time finding many people who have gone with that choice. We get a LOT of compliments about the color of our pool and every day when I look at it, it makes me smile. I am a big fan of the color, but understand it may not be for everyone. I hear you...I was worried sick. We ended up not using Pebble Tec.....long story...you can read about it on my thread titled "im so frustrated i could scream"....anyways....we were going to have midnight blue but after all the headaches and delays from pebble tec installer....we ended up going with the "River Rok"....basically the same....it is more like pebble sheen. We went with a custom color trying to match midnight blue....its close....i think somewhere inbetween midnight blue and tahoe blue. Heres my build link if you are interested:
