New pool is on the edge of heavy woods. What pool cover for fall?

Hello all,

Our new pool build is complete, and we are enjoying it so much! Thank you everyone who answered my many questions. :)

While we love the privacy and beauty of the woods our pool is next to, we know that we are going to have a major battle when the leaves begin to fall.

We are in N.C., and hope to extend our swimming season to right up before they start to come down, and then use a leaf cover to catch them. The trees are very large and dense, and almost all hardwoods.

Can someone recommend a good brand of leaf cover? We don't have deck anchors, and had tentatively planned to use concrete blocks and bungees to secure it. Our pool is 15 x 45 with a large tanning ledge. We also have two columns with sheer descents, so we have some odd and irregular shapes to deal with.

Hi oakrunfarm,

I also have a similar question. We just finished our pool as well (in Long Island, with lots of trees around), and we were all set to get a loop loc, which is made to measure and fits around the pool. The fellow came out to measure today, and I learned that it will require about 50 grommets being drilled in our lovely bluestone. We've heard that loop loc are the best, but our pool is lake/irregular shaped. Now not sure if this is the way to go, but don't know other options...

We had a looploc on our pool in MA... the grommets are really not noticeable to anyone but you. They retract into the surface when not in use. Not sure if your bluestone is mortared in...if not the cover might move the stone. Ours was in concrete.

banana, stonesmama, cdavmd, smbnobles - LOL!! :) It IS nerve-wracking, isn't it? You're right, it's like one big long suspense movie, like a really bad "B" movie or something. It's 112 degrees right now, good GRIEF. I laughed about you needing pot holders to open the car, but it's so true! The BBQ area is so hot right now we can only work for about an hour at a time. I think I'll put the sprinkler on this weekend, just so I can endure it a little better. Wish we had a pool.......................OK, wish we had a pool with WATER. Tired of looking at my big, empty, three-tiered flower pot in the backyard. Give me petunias, or give me water. Either way, this big empty shotcrete shell has gotta go. They start the thoro-seal process tomorrow, so at least we'll have a different color to look at for a few days. If pebblesheen doesn't happen on Monday, I'm filling this dang thing up with water anyway. It will be fairly watertight with all this sealant. It might even be a new hit color - "thoro-seal brown". I'm not trying to wish anybody's weekend away, but I'm hoping that Monday morning comes around very quickly! This thread is going to max out, so on Monday morning I'm going to start a new one (the FINAL chapter)! You can think of me on Sunday night, with my face glued against the window, looking for the Pebblesheen truck. When you hear the joyful screaming from the southwest, you'll know the truck is here :). Hairline cracks in concrete are normal, BUT the installer is supposed to install control joints at a spacing such that the hairline cracks form along the joints and are not noticeable. Industry standard for sidewalks is control joints at 5' o.c. and expansion joints at 20' o.c. Usually you don't see pool decking with joints spaced like this, but they should be! If insufficient control joints are installed then you get hairline cracking in undesired locations. The chips and cracks around the anchors are particularly bothersome though. It sounds like the anchors are failing. Either they were improperly installed or the concrete is not of sufficient PSI to have anchors in it. With the deck being less than 6 months old I would expect it to still be under warranty, I would definitely take it up with the PB.

Racket: I have all these very heavy flagstone pieces on the box, so I guess it takes some time to lift them up and clean the whole thing out. Who knows?! Viennamommy: the automatic cover IS like a garage door opener; very simple; takes about 20 - 30 seconds. When it's open , you can't even tell it's there, because of the installation being done at the time of the pool build. No regrets, just the hassle of the leaves due to where we placed the pool (our bad, I guess!)

Thank you all very much. I'm really enjoying it. Still trying to figure out all of the automation options, but really like having the wireless remote for the EasyTouch! I'll try to post some more pictures as soon as they have finished up the fireplace (had to order more stone) and the final dirt work/clean-up, but it will probably be next Spring now before I take on the rest of the landscaping and put out my new patio furniture. :( It's already getting too cold to really enjoy swimming and the leaves are starting to fall as well so I'm going to have to get it covered soon. (Pool cover is ordered, but not installed yet.) While I've been pretty pleased with the quality of the work of my builder, his project and time management skills have been absolutely horrendous!

Eek. I'm not excited about anything being drilled into our bluestone either! Of course, that probably could not look much worse than using concrete blocks to hold down the cover, lol!

I did a lot of searching today, and it looks like pretty much all of the leaf nets I saw are placed on top of an existing cover, and I had not planned on using a winter cover.

Will be interesting to see what kinds of response we get. I wanted to have a plan in place before those suckers start falling in a couple of months!

I've been lurking on this forum as we are in the beginning stages of renovating/resurfacing our pool :).

Anyway, we live in GA and when we bought our house 4 years ago, it came with an existing pool. My parents never closed their pool in the winter, and we decided to do the same with ours. Winter covers are ugly, and we like looking out over the pool and yard in the winter even though it's too cold to swim. We have a bunch of large poplars around our pool and a they tend to clog up the skimmer in the fall. Once the leaves begin falling, we put out the leaf cover and leave it in place a month or two until around the beginning of December. We secure it with concrete blocks, but the net still tends to drape down in the water a few inches. We let it drape and we scoop out the leaves using a leaf rake. The net basically just keeps the leaves from clogging the skimmer basket and/or falling to the bottom. There is still a bit of maintenance involved and it may not be very professional looking, but it works for us :)

That all sounds exactly like what I plan to do. Thanks for posting. At least now I know it is doable.

I wonder what is a good brand of leaf net to buy? Since it is going to be the only cover, and I won't be closing the pool, I need to make sure the openings or grid is small enough to keep little pieces and debris from falling through and into the water.
