Hands free and out of sight?

We use Hafele foot pedals for a pull-out trash. Hands free. Out of site. It also opens from the other side of the island as well for double acces:

The hafele are supposed to work only for frameless cabinets but our cabinet maker was able to modify easily to work for our framed one.

Thanks. I'll have to see if I can modify it for my existing cabinets. Do you find that the foot pedal ever gets in the way, or would it if it were under the sink?

Walt - I'll take some photos soon and post them. Holy grail, haha... yes, I agree. You know, I actually grew up with a trashcan with self-opening/closing lid, but can't find any mention of these online, not even a picture. Yet, back in the day in Switzerland, just about all trashcans functioned like this. Now the available systems are expensive and complicated, and demand exacting dimensions to function, not something I could possibly duplicate. The Swiss contraptions from the40s/50s and 60s relied on a very simple, adjustable and thus, foolproof idea. The trashcans sat in a holder on the inside of the under-sink cabinet door. When the door was opened, the can would swing out along with it, but the hinged lid was restrained by a thin adjustable chain from the back/top of the cab interior. The chain was attached so as to force the lid to rise up when opening and drop the lid shut again during closing. The chain length mattered, but could easily be adjusted. I adapted the idea to my Ikea trash pullout under the sink. So far, my set up is just temporary (the can is held in place with masking tape etc). I will rebuild with more permanent materials as soon as I find some time. In the meantime, we're enjoying my hands-free trash pullout.

I agonized over the trash location as well. I've always had freestanding trashcans sitting somewhere - usually in the way - on the floor of my kitchen and have always hated them. I've never been able to find one that I liked or that matched my kitchen, so I've always just had to settle for whatever I could find. I can't stand to have my trash can in the pantry - it just seems incongruous to have my trash in there with my food. I don't like the idea of having it under the sink because I don't like having two functions in the same place. Why agonize? I loathed the idea of having to open the trash with my potentially dirty hands and those free standing cans always had a hands free option. Enter the GW Kitchen forum where I learned about the foot pedal for trash cabinets and the whole thing was decided. I absolutely LOVE having my trash hidden in a cabinet. No one has to move out of the way in order for someone else to access it. Yes, guests have to be told where it is -- but how is that different than anyone else's kitchen? In any kitchen that doesn't have a freestanding trash cans out in the open, aren't guests always having to ask? I never know if it's under the sink or in the pantry or in the adjoining utility room, etc. To review: I love my pull out trash because it's: -- Hidden -- Accessible -- Hands free -- In a convenient and acceptable (to me) location

No, he is installing it improperly. Show him these photos if you need proof. This is a 24" deep cabinet base, standard. Mine does not stick out at all. Not one iota: This is mine, with the (working) drawer above. If my cabinets were inset rather than overlay, it still would not need to stick out. At all. The depth of the trash Blum Waste kit: When opened, and the cans removed you have easy access to see and change the servo drive settings - as you can see it's very slender. Be sure to tell him (now) that you want the install and operating instructions. There is a tiny switch that allows you to change whether or not you wish it to open a little, or a lot (I set ours to the largest opening and can access both cans, hands free). There's another setting for something else, but I'm not feeling well today, so can't remember what it's for. Which is why you need the manual when he's done.

I saw that trash magic one in the past but couldn't find any reviews online. You're the first person I've heard that has actually used it. I do agree that a simple mechanical type device has less that could go wrong. My main concern is that it does not open the waste drawer completely or opens too hard and bounces back. I'm guessing you learn to adjust the foot pressure after a few tries?

It is in the middle of the cabinet and really tucked under the toe kick so I would not think it would get in the way when standing at the sink since you probably don't put your feet right in the middle of your sink.

I am just now seeing this. Beagles, where did you find your foot pedal? I called Hafele today and they said it only worked on a certain brand of cabinet and couldn't be used unless I was installing the cabinet that it came with, in other words not as an aftermarket add-on. Someone rang my doorbell right then, so I didn't get the chance to ask for more details. I see that yours is silver, too.

I have been thinking of putting a big wide cup pull or appliance pull at the bottom of the door so I can open the cabinet with my foot -- that's how much I want a hands-free trash can. There isn't a good place to set out a freestanding one in my kitchen, and I don't feel quite up to spending the money for the Servo-drive at the moment.

Awesome idea! I hate touching the trash knob when my hands are dirty/contaminated. I often use a paper towel to do it.

Beagles-I love the idea of a single tash receptacle on each side of the island instead of two together. How do you utilize your drawers on the end of the island between your trash cans? Thanks.

Great idea Northcarolina. My cabinets are partial overlay so I don't think either of these will work.
