Hi everyone,

This site is fantastic. You all are a tremendous resource. Check out my progress. Demo started June 7th.

I bought my house in '03 and pool was functional just not appealing. In April I let the pool guy go and thought about breeding mosquitos for a living. Here's what prompted the remodel and justification for my que sera sera attitude about taking out an equity loan:

The paver crew showed up June 27 to start grading. These guys are fabulous. Started work at 7am every day, working in 90+ heat. I made sure my sons provided Gatorade daily. They are home from college and marvelled at what they have now termed "real man work"

Wow, I remember some of your pictures from prior posts. This is a major remodel, what was the area under the gazebo....a spa or kiddie type pool. We remodeled too, but we didnt take up our existing deck, went over it. Boy does yours look great!!! They took ALL of your previous plaster off right down to the gunite....they only chiseled loose parts of ours, wish they had removed it all. What pebble tec color did you choose? Did they fix the unevenly spaced tiles on the rounded areas? And you decided to go with the bar, you will love it. What kind of coping did you use, it looks like travertine, which is what we used. Cant wait to see the completely finished pool. Sorry for the 20 questions....

I also have raised beds in Connecticut and have a couple of them (4 x 12 ft) covered with low tunnels, 4' high, made from 1/2" PVC pipe. I've used them for many years but only as season extenders. I was never able to get any crops to reliably grow during Jan and Feb because of the single plastic cover and no heat. I found that spinach is one of the hardiest crops to winter over if it is about 2 or 3 inches tall in November, but it didn't actually grow much until early March, then it took off like a rocket. I also used the tunnels to start seeds in early March of cold-tolerant vegetables. There was no provision for automatic venting on sunny days and that caused big temperature swings by the time April rolled around. Very heavy wet snows also caused structural problems since the PVC was only half inch. I had a coldframe for a few years with an automatic vent and that actually worked better because it was lower and had less heat loss, but it was not large enough. Last fall I build a large hoop house over two of the raised beds; it is 12' long and 10' wide and about 7' tall and is made from 1" PVC and 6-mil single-ply construction plastic. No heat. It has survived some heavy snow loads without any bending or distortion. I didn't have time to plant anything in it last fall because it wasn't finished until December but I planted lots of cold-tolerant seeds in early February. They were covered with Remay to get the extra protection that Coleman suggests. A min/max thermometer showed the temperature got into the low twenties at night. This week I expect the night temps to stay above freezing. The seeds I planted in early Feb are doing well but the ones I started indoors in late Feb and put in the hoophouse 2 weeks ago are doing just as well or better. I intend to remove the plastic in summer and replace it in November so I don't cook the plants. Temperature control is tough without fans and I really don't want to get involved with electric heat and ventilation (I might change my mind some day). I just built an automatic window this week and installed it yeasterday; it is 30" by 36" with a univent opener. I really needed it because the air temp might be freezing when I leave for work and get really sunny and warm by lunch time. I am working on the second one this week. This is a challenge with a PVC hoophouse because of the difficulties involved in making a window on a curved surface. This summer I am going to dig around the raised beds and put foam board vertically around them as far down as I can dig (about 18" in my stony soil). This should keep it warmer in the winter. I will also put low tunnels inside but I only need thin plastic covering because it won't have snow on it. But they will have to be well sealed especially at the edges of the hoophose where it is coldest. Maybe I'll give in and put a small electric heater in the low tunnel but I will use it to keep it from freezing rather than try to grow things like tomatoes. Then I will be ready to try real 4 season growing; I recommend the book because of the interesting ideas in it and will be looking at this forum for best crops to grow. Mairin: Your kitchen is amazing! Have you posted any photos of your completed backsplash yet? Thank you so much for posting such good expansive shots of your RP walls. It looks a lot more tan on my screen, but I can tell that it is going to work great for me as my cabinets are almost as dark as yours and my granite is light (Blanco Romano). Based on the 14 x 8 panel I painted I tend to wonder if need to go a bit deeper in tone. I understand that most paint can be lightened as I've seen reference to 50% strength, but can the same thing be done to darken the paint? I was thinking perhaps just a 10% or 20% deepening. On the other hand once I get the full walls painted it may be just fine. I'll check out the decorator's white. Cloud White was also mentioned earlier but tends to be too yellow next to my horrible white/gray window frames that can't be changed out at this time, but BM lacey pearl might work well. raehelen: Cabot Trail reminds me of melted milk chocolate. The Edgecomb Gray which is next to the Revere Pewter on the swatch card has a bit more tan to it, but is still quite gray. It is lovely too, but I needed the cooler tone of the RP. In my spavce both tend to have a green cast in certain lights.

The 3 options I can see for the oven are numbered 1,2,3 on the plan: 3. Oven would go under the counter. 2. Best access for the oven, but I think it makes it too tight with too many things going on in that corner. MW would go above it. 1.Oven under counter Rhome- When you put cabinets at both ends it looks odd from the LR side. It reminds me of the Wizard of Oz when the not yet wizard is talking to Dorothy from behind the window. I think the problem is created by having the wall, then an opening, then wall and then a doorway. Not sure if there is any way to visualize that one:> Here is that earlier plan: The problem from the inside is that the sink is really close to the table. And isn't the frig too far from everything? Mom- Back to the original floor plan in this thred. The depth is not a problem,it is the width.As I see it, there is only 4ft 4inces for both the frig and the oven which I don't think is enough. The sifting comes in to make it work. Am I missing something?

Do you think foul play occurred in the death of Addie? I didn't read your link, so maybe there's more info there. I will have to drive by that house. I'm going down to Madison this week, so it's not that far. DH has a relative, second or third cousin or something like that, who is president of Wells Fargo bank. He lives in a mega-mansion in San Francisco and is apparently a really nice guy. DH's Aunt and Uncle went out there and stayed with him. Small world.

Isn't it amazing what changing things up will do? It is looking very nice and can't wait to see the final pics. Are you putting the spa in the back right corner??

I cannot wait to the finished product! Everything already looks so wonderful. So jealous of that BBQ island. It is going to look fab. Good for you!

Thank you guys for checking it out. Will post again when filled or after the cure time. I think I read here that it's 2 weeks for pebbletec to reach it's final stage. Is there really no swimming during that time. Is that 10 days or 14? I just don't know that I can stand to wait.

gotpool - yes spa will go in the corner. I had them create the raised area 12X12. Spa is 8X8 and I want to find a reasonably priced gazebo, maybe 10X10.

gk5040 - 20 questions not a problem - under the gazebo there was a poorly constructed pond. My sons convinced me to do the spa instead. I went with the midnight blue pebble tec. They just applied it today. Acid wash tomorrow. Tiles are fixed. They still went with slicing them up, but there are the same number of slices on both sides now. I'll show that when I upload the filled pool. My coping is a limestone from MasterTile (Torreon). I got very frustrated trying to decide on coping and tile. PB is also bringing a tan skimmer lid.

Oh, what a transformation.....its beautiful. I remember your post on the torreon. While ours is travertine, its all related....just think it has to do with either how far or how long it was in the earth.

Back to your pebble tec....when they are done acid washing, they will begin filling. My kids kept going in to test it out...it was fun to be in the deep end when it wasnt deep. After it was filled...one day...they came back to do the chemical start up. We could swim the next day. Three days later we brought the water to the pool store to start balancing. The only time we couldnt swim was after we added acid....didnt want to burn the eyes. I dont believe there is any real wait time to using your pool with a pebble finish....plaster is a different story. There was a recent post about that, cant remember what the post was about.

Pool filled Sunday! Midnight Blue Pebble Tec. Pool Maintenance guy said PB did an excellent job with the Pebble Tec. The independent endorsement was good to hear, since I didn't really know what to expect. Equipment was started Monday and tomorrow chemicals adjusted. Swimming this weekend! Yippee!

Now I have to work on the surroundings. Spa and BBQ Island should be here in another week. Also thinking about what plants to put in the small 3'X25' planter along the back wall. Any ideas? I don't have a greeb thumb. Would like something easy to maintain and drought tolerant. Also thinking about assorted potted plants scattered about. Will also be painting the walls and looking for something to surround the equipment. But first I'm gonna do some swimming.

Livin, very nice outcome. I like all of it very much, well coordinated colors. I asked in a previous post about your pavers, but seeing the pix of yours on pallets answered my ? They did a great job on them by the way. I love the water color with the tile and coping. I do plants in pots around my pool, I did all cobalt blue pots which brings out the color of my tile and they are easy to repot when I kill them : ) Look forward to final pictures, enjoy the swim. Barb
