Does anyone have oak cabinets anymore?
Comments (39)@sombreuil I guess I’m an outlaw as I just put in limestone floor in Versailles pattern on the first floor. I used to love oak and hate the orange color but now I have a huge aversion to wood kitchen as my in laws have oak everywhere. Their house is so dark that I carry a flashlight with me because I keep tripping over all the small carpets underfoot. Their cabinets were custom but the oak has gone orange. It was hellish trying to find paint to tone down the kitchen. With oak walls, ceiling beams, floors, cabinets, trims and all furniture (big and small) in dark oak, it’s very claustrophobic and oppressive to be in the house. We remodeled their house recently due to flood and they put everything back the same and added more oak in any area that did not have it before. My advice is choose what you love but use moderation in the amount of wood....See MoreProfessional painting for oak cabinets oil based paint or lacquer
Comments (3)Enamel paint doesn't really signify what kind of paint it is, just that the paint is a washable paint, meaning that a protective skin forms on top of the paint. Enamel paints could be latex, acrylic, oil or lacquer really. I would use BIN primer (shellac based) or any other number of acrylic primers that are designed to stick to slick surfaces (bonding). I would then topcoat with a 100 percent high quality acrylic paint, probably in satin. Some perfer semi-gloss. The reason I would choose acrylic is because it won't yellow like oil or lacquer or crack in the joints as easily....See MoreAnyone painted oak cabinets white? Advice appreciated.
Comments (4)I haven't painted oak kitchen cabinets, but we did paint over oak paneling and doors. All were oak with a polyurethane finish. One painter told us they had to be sanded, then primed and painted - a messy and time consuming job. I then had another painter come in who told us that with the right product we didn't need to sand and could put it right on the polyurethane - resulting in a cheaper and less messy job. This was six years ago and there is not one spot where the paint has peeled or shown any signs of a weak bond. The product they used was by Dunn-Edwards and is called Block-it. It doesn't smell very good, but they put one coat on directly over the poly and then used a coat of latex interior paint. Came out great and as stated above has held up great....See MoreHelp!
