Are KraftMaid and Merillat considered mid-grade cabinets? Help me!
Comments (4)I always use Kraftmaid, but I also install them myself. I have never had a problem with any of the 3 bathrooms and 2 kitchen remodels I have done over the years. I always get the best hinges, pullout doors etc, that they offer, and I usually go overboard on the amount of screws I use to attach them to the wall and to each other. If a wall cabinet is over a certain size I will go with a "No Butt" frame for added strength. I am sure they are not top of the line but I want a good cabinet at a good price and that is what I have received from Kraftmaid. Here is the kitchen that I just finished. I have owned 3 personal homes in my life, the two that I sold I made over $600k in profits, and this last home I could probably make another $75k but this is our "last" one.. I write this only to show I have some good, practical experience. Good luck......See MoreKitchen Sink Higher than rest of cabinets
Comments (17)OK, a little background info: This is an Eastern European kitchen; it’s on the basement (or lower ground level), and at the time it was slapped together, it was indeed done so out of necessity and with second-hand cabinets and appliances, due to limited resources. Now the family is planning to invest in updating this space a bit and would like to replace the cabinets and appliances. However, they believe (and were told so by several contractors and two plumbers) that the sink has to stay where it is at the higher level due to the kitchen’s basement location. The sink was raised in the first place (compared to the rest of the cabinets) because it needed the minimum incline to drain into the septic tank (the pipe that drains into the tank is where it is, and it cannot be dug out and moved.) Now somebody mentioned the possibility of adding a pump, which may be something to consider. However, I was told the clogging issues have already been encountered even with the raised height of the sink, and the family insists the sink stays where it is (raised) to avoid drainage issues. Another interesting piece of plumbing information is that the toilet has never been installed on this level for the same reason: when the house was built they were told it was too low to drain properly and that there can only be a hookup for a sink or washing machine, but no toilet. The house is a multi-generational space, and the lower ground floor functions as a granny-flat/day-care center of a sort. Even though there’s a nicer modern kitchen on the upper floor, all family meals are cooked here, and that’s why it’s finally decided that it’s due for a make-over. Many thanks to all who took the time to comment and help solving our how-to-work-around-the-raised-sink-cabinet dilemma. We are all aware that this was a sloppy job, and would therefore like to improve on it (no need to rub it it.) Sincerely, -Suz I’m attaching another photograph of the kitchen/dining area for those who asked to see more of the context (on the opposite side of this is the sitting/playroom area)....See MoreBuilder-grade kitchen update/facelift progress
Comments (9)Boxerpal, thanks so much! We did change the floors out on the whole main level — they are a luxury vinyl product called Smartcore. We wanted the look of wood, but without the risk of water damage (we have a very aggressive ice maker, lol, and cats and kids who spill things). I’m really impressed with the product, you’d never know it wasn’t wood if you weren’t told. The shoelace is actually to keep a curious kitten out of the liquor cabinet; he’s obsessed with knocking over anything glass with liquid in it. As for the light fixture, I have the replacement ready to install, just haven’t swapped it out yet. I’m replacing the fluorescent fixture with a modern/abstract flushmount that coordinates with the dining area chandelier. Herbflavor — thanks! Honestly it helped that we did this during COVID — the sales were insane. Ac Lb — yes, they sprayed the base cabinets too. The base cabs are Stardew by SW. Thanks!...See MoreKitchen countertops higher than window?
Comments (5)Thank you @mama goose_gw zn6OH! Those are all great tips! I hadn't thought about the hood needing to be wider. @palimpsest Thank you for the clarification on standard height. That's really great to know and I feel much better that the counter won't be on top of 36 inches :) For the code part, the person who spoke to me today said that having the countertops higher than the bottom of the window might not be up to code, rather than the counters not being standard height. This was the person testing some of our floor tile for asbestos who had done a lot of home renovations in the area, so I'm taking it with a grain of salt but it did give me pause. I live in a small town and red tape isn't as much of a thing here as it is in other areas, but still. Thinking of a possible future buyer being put off if their inspection says the entire kitchen isn't up to code because of the counter/window situation....See Moredanielle00
