Bought my Kindle

Just got it charged but I have to wait until Monday to get any books. I don't have WiFi but our cafeteria does. Can't wait to get my new books

You will love having a Kindle! There are so many free and inexpensive books available. With the Wi-Fi, you will even be able to borrow books from your local library (you must have a library card).

I am 49 and love all this new technology as I have been a gadget person all my life since atari he he. I have a full size tablet and a kindle fire and I have used a friends little dell netbook to see if I would like it. The small keys on the netbook were not as bad as I thought but the netbook itself was too slow for my taste but we were at the bookstore and I am used to high speed Internet at home. I have used my laptop in the recliner and find it ok but much prefer using it in bed on my lap while watching Tv. My kindle fire I love in the recliner and bed. So much so I joined netflix for $8 a month and put the netflix app on the fire and even though I can watch all the netflix stuff on the computer I find I prefer watching it on the kindle. I find myself using the fire more and more at home instead of the laptop to surf and check email. My vision is such that I need my glasses only for distance. My close up vision is so good I find even with the progressive bifocals at times I can still see the kindle or computer screen better without the glasses. Myself I would keep the kindle and learn how to use it from the recliner to read email and surf and then if I needed to do more would use the desktop but that is me so you have to do what suits your style. I registered my mother's kindle as my second so she can read anything I have bought. I thought that was cool until my family chipped in and bought her an ipad for her 91st birthday. Once I put the kindle app on the ipad, she not only gets all my books, but she sees the covers which she has found very helpful. There was quite a learning curve, but the ipad is the best gift she ever received. She subscribes to a couple of newspapers (very helpful now that right wrist is in a cast), views her favorite news shows and my sister gave her netflix. She watched all of Damages and is annoyed new season isn't available yet and watched all of Doc Martin, etc.

Have you even contacted Amazon at all or the site where you bought the books? I own several kindles and amazon has the most excellent tech support with help for their kindles. You can either post on the kindle forums or call Amazon so there is really no need to take your tower out of the house. You don't even need to hook the kindle to the computer to get files on it. You do have wifi in your house don't you? What happened when you installed send to kindle on your computer and tried that? Are you sure the files you bought are in a format for the kindle? I think you should contact the site where you bought the files and make sure other wise you are waisting your time taking your tower out of house to get them transferred if they are not in the right format for the kindle. I'm changing the subject a bit, but if you're interested in books that really "put you into the mind of someone else" and are interested in autism, try The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time. It's told through the eyes of a teenaged boy who is autistic, and it was quite interesting. He made "rules" for himself, and although they were somewhat logical, they were not sensible at all. He couldn't see things that were blatantly clear to the reader, yet he was a brilliant mathematician. A secondary plotline shows the reader the frustration of a loving father who was trying very hard to do what was best for his son -- with difficulties from multiple directions. Not a true story, but an excellent read.

My favorite sites for free and cheap Kindle books is
www.pixelofink.com if you sign up for the free email you get a list daily of lots of great books.
Also good are www.bookbub.com the and www.bookgorilla.com they also have the email lists. I get all of them. I have tons of great books all free. Get each one you even think you might be interested in because some are only those prices a few hours. You can have as many as possible in your Amazon library account.

You may mean the paper white? Does it not have the automatic connection to the Amazon store with out having a wifi connection?

Raven, the Kindle Paperwhite comes in two versions (well, four, because each of the two versions can be gotten either with or without "special offers" -- you pay $10 more to not have the special offers).

So, the two versions are (1) Wi-Fi only or (2) Wi-Fi plus 3G.

With the Wi-Fi only version, you have to either have your own wireless network at home, or be in a free Wi-Fi hotspot in order to connect to the Kindle store on Amazon (or connect to any web site via the built-in browser).

With the Wi-Fi plus 3G version, if you don't have a wireless network at home and aren't anywhere near a wireless hotspot, you can connect to the Kindle store (or any web site) via the AT&T 3G cellular network. No, you are NOT charged anything for using the 3G network -- Amazon takes care of that.

The "special offers" only appear onscreen (at the bottom) when you are looking at the Home page, so they're not intrusive at all. And, they often have some really good deals!

Ahhhh ok I knew there were some versions that had the ability to connect wirelessly with out wifi and with out having to pay for a connection. My brother in law had the very first original Kindle and his could connect from just about anywhere he went with out him having a wifi connection. That really makes it nice since he traveled a lot to some remote locations.

My first Kindle is what is known as the "2nd Generation" Kindle. It has 3G, but not Wi-Fi. Couldn't figure out why I couldn't borrow a library book on it, till I realized that you can only borrow library books if your Kindle has Wi-Fi.

My second Kindle is what's now sold as "just" a Kindle. The $69 version. It has Wi-Fi, but not 3G. I love it because it's soooo lightweight.

My third Kindle is a Kindle Fire.

And my fourth Kindle is a Paperwhite. I got the version with Wi-Fi and 3G. All bases covered. :-)
