mjpt...there's a lot of opinions on this topic. As a long time garden webber and owner of both a salt water pool and a hot tub with ozone system...here's my thoughts. Regarding SWG's...we've had ours for 4 years now on our pool and have not had any problems with corrosion of metal or rock around our pool. We also have not had to replace the cell yet, but I'm anticipating having to do so soon as our PB told us they normally last 3-5 years. We have stainless steel posts that stay in our pool for months at a time for basketball and volleyball...no corrosion problems. We have lots of rocks around our pool and a large waterfall...no problems with stone erosion or pitting. We have stamped concrete for our decking....no pitting or erosion. I've read on this forum that the corrosion problems are due to stray currents and that proper electrical bonding reduces these stray currents. Makes sense to me and we bonded all metal items in our pool and surrounding areas accordingly. The addition of salt to the pool water does make it noticeably smoother to the skin...everyone who swims in it comments on the pleasant feeling. Regarding ozone....the hot tub has a flourescent ozonator and does a good job of sanitizing the hot tub. But, we also have to supplement the ozone with bleach after every soak to keep a residual sanitizer in the body of water. While the small circulation pump runs 24/7 generating ozone 24/7, the hot tub manufacturer still recommends a supplemental sanitizer such as chlorine or bromine that stays in the water continually sanitizing. The ozone system did not provide a silky smooth feeling as some on this forum have claimed. We ended up adding salt to our hot tub to get the same feel we like from our pool. Actually, we use our pool water to fill the hot tub periodically which provides properly balanced water for the hot tub along with the salt for the smooth water feel that we like. It makes sense to me that an ozonator reduces chlorine demand, but to what extent I'm not sure and I'm skeptical that it will provide any meaningful return on investment as a result. If your budget allows, I think both SWG and ozonator work together OK. A SWG will provide smooth water plus sanitizing without any supplemental needs. Ozone, on the other hand, needs supplemental sanitizing help which costs extra money. Hope this helps.

I have done a ton spa systems lately with waterway jets ( I prefer the standard poly jets over the poly storm). You can typically do 7-8 waterway jets on a VS pump through the filtration system. I would use a seperate 2hp pump if you want a total of 16 jets. This way you will have multiple levels of jets, especially if you tie the jets together. There is very little to gain by having a variable speed jet pump. Don't use minijets for calf jets, you will regret it later, you can always turn down the jets if they are too strong using their internal shutoff. I like to tie the jet lines in with the filtration lines because when running on a low circulation speed, speed for the heater, the jets are less likely to draw in air which cools off the water. If you are not using the jets, you really don't want air drawn into them. To make all this work, you will have to install a check valve in the spa return line, as well as the jet return line to prevent backwards water flow through the systems. I would also consider using the waterway channel drains if you have space they are good for 316 gpm @3.9fps It will be easier to install, and will look alot cleaner than 3 individual round grates. There are 3 2 1/2" suctions fittings on the bottom of them which would be perfect for your system.

With your setup I've found that the very low speeds prefer a spa at pool level, when the spa is raised you experience your dilemma. My suggestion is programming the computer to run the spa for an hour at the low speed in the morning, run the pool at low speed during the day, and then having the spa run again for an hour in the early evening. With this schedule you get maximum electrical savings and maximum sanitization for the spa. I disagree with mas985 on simply running at a higher speed for a half hour once daily, this body of water (spa) is the most susceptible to UV degradation of chlorine and escalation of the water temperature. If you choose his method run at least 45 minutes at high speed twice daily. I also disagree with racket too, to many avenues of return and bypasses will always seem to outfox the second fox. In other words, only the plumber and the original owner get it, and many times it's just the plumber because it outfoxed the pool owner too. Plus it costs for the prices of actuators and relay spaces. IMO your better served running the very low speed all the time and doing the spa, pool, spa daily cycle thing. Just my .02 See ya, Kelly
