Old Growth doug fir will hold up not bad,second growth will not, forget the roll roofing altogeher it will cause a lot of problems. TWP 116 is the best outdoor finish I have found yet. John

I called several building supply stores in the area and none of them have heard of TWP, also one paint store, so where do you get it or is this a distributor only product?
What is the problem with putting roofing between the boards; I was told this by and old wood worker who has been at it for 40 years, said it would stop the wood from rotting. On one of those home improvment shows I saw them put flasing between the joust and deck; would that be better? btw where is Little Fall Creek, I live out in the country by Coos Bay on the south coast.

That little place is hmmmm 20 miles outside of Eugune. You might have to google up twp it is a pro product not really geared up for the box stores.
Using acq framing lumber there is no need to stop it from rotting, using felt,flashing, rubber tape will trap moisture. I do recomend a bead of construstion adhesive not really for hold down power but to protect the decking in the first few important moons from all the water escaping from the green preasure treated lumber. J

I wouldn't recommend using doug fir, but if that's what you can afford, then do it. You should get a fungicide/insecticide
product, and pour it in a bucket, and dip the ends of the boards in it (after they are cut to size). That'll help in the long run, as the ends are more vulnerable to problems.

John, I'am glad you had the good words about douglas fir: I was worried about the longevity of it. I have seen cedar decks in the area that have a wear pattern from a lot of foot traffic, the fir is a harder wood; I have been told. I like the grain pattern of the douglas much better then the cedar. I have a local paint dealer trying to sell me Para wood stain (says it is comparible with TWP) particularly their TIMBERCARE line at $22.50 a gallon, seems resonable, is anyone familar with that brand.

I have never heard of that finish, comparible covers a lot of ground.Remember I am talking about CVG old growth doug fir. J

Doug Fir was used for years for raised decks on the East Coast. Usually they were painted and as long as they were protected the boards lasted for years. Presently, I am replacing rotted Redwood 2X6's with cheap doug fir 2X6's. I let them dry out, then I sand them nice and smooth - two coats of an oil primer and two coats of Cabot's Solid Color Deck Stain. Some of these replacements are going on 5 years and look like new.

If you use 30 lb. felt paper strips on top of the joist it will help keep untreated joist from rotting, I've seen it done first hand on a deck demo job I did & was amazed at how well the yellow pine joist held up. I'm not sure what good it will do for the doug fir decking tho. Roll roofing laid over the entire frame would be a bad idea as John said.
