using douglas fir for decking

tummy
17 years ago

I have just recently got a deal on a bunch of untreated douglas fir from a local private sawmill hear in oregon and want to use it for a deck that my wife has been bugging me about for the last couple of years. I have been told that if I put roll roofing between all boards (joust and the deck; post and joust) and metal hangers between joust and rim joust and treat the deck yearly with a good quality stain that I should be able to get 15-20 years out of it. I couldn't afford the higher priced wood that is usally talked about on this forum as I am retired and dirt poor:--) I do have treated post and will be useing cement blocks. My question to the forum is: will this work and if so what kind of stain should I use. Thanks for any advice you can give me.
