I'm not Daki, but I am taking the liberty of posting a link to Daki's gorgeous kitchen with gorgeous backsplash!

I just posted on another thread that my tile backsplash behind my range is a bit of a PITA to clean. Despite my powerful hood, there is splatter that gets into the grout of the backsplash that is behind the hood. I wish I'd put granite slab there instead.

chloe_s_mom has seen my backsplash :). Gibby 3000's kitchen was one of our inspiration kitchens as well. DH wanted a backsplash behind the range that looked similar to hers. I know I've seen a number of kitchens here with granite behind the cooktop/ range. I just can't remember which ones :(

Here's our modest reno. It shows full granite backsplash with 6" BS on either side of the cooktop. We have not decided to tile or not tile the rest of the wall. I can guarantee you won't regret full granite BS, no grout to deal with!

There waa a post about granite behind the cooktop versus tile with grout. Having Granite behind ours, I can tell you , "It is a piece of cake to keep clean". Originally I had done my outside bbq with tile and grout---what a pain to clean and the grout didnt last any time at all---ya know the heat, Sun, grease etc.sooooooo I had some granite left over from my kitchen renovation---guess where that granite is now?

We had a small kitchen and did not want too many different surfaces competing with each other, so we chose a full backsplash rahter than tile, etc., on the stove wall. It is 3cm thick and with just a square edge on the end. It is easy to clean and we like it. Only wished we had used plug mold so as not to have any outlets showing.

Stunning svwillow! I see from other photos that you chose a 4 inch backsplash for the sink area - any reason for not going with a full granite there too (other than cost, I would imagine)?

Because it is a small (11.5' X 11.5') kitchen, and because we choose a granite with a lot of movement; we did not want one design element to overpower the others. Had we done a full backsplash everywhere, I think it might have been too much.

I've been overtaken by work for a week and didn't see your question. The full backsplash granite I believe is 2cm as is the custom in Calif. And the height of the backsplsh on either side is actually more like 7". The fabricator agreed to get it a little higher to hide the damaged drywall from tearing out old tile. Because we were doing a budget reno, we did not have a GC. We had to coordinate between granite installer and hood installer. Make sure you have the support behind the wall before the granite goes in and know exactly where the holes are to be drilled in the granite for the hood install. GWers helped us out here big time. Hopefully you won't have this issue, but to us it seemed it was a stressed time to do it right.

I hope you decide with the full backsplash, the granite is just so beautiful and functional.

So I've decided to have a piece of granite behind the cooktop (we have an under the cabinet fan, so the granite will not go under it), and I've asked for the piece to be bevelled on 3 sides (under the fan, and to each side), so as to match up (approximately) with the tile thickness that I'll do on each side. I'll post photos once the granite is installed!
