Hey folks,

This is my first attempt at posting photos so hopefully it works.

We used TimberTech Earthwood in Teak color and installed it with the TimberTech hidden fasteners.

We ended up going with black Posts/Balusters/Caps/Skirts and the Traditional Walnut Railings (top and bottom). Rip up of the old deck and work of the new is supposed to start after Easter/early May. The Traditional Walnut rail is slightly different than the EE Pacific Walnut, but it doesn't look to bad next to each other. TT was nice enough to send me samples (free, and free overnight shipping) of the railing so I could lay it next to the board samples we have. The gentlemen from TT I communicated with said most customers with the color of the deck boards I am going with use all black railings. I really love look of the Radiance Rail, but the Builders is nice and certainly cheaper! Perhaps I'll post some pictures when we are done. Good luck to you!

There is at least as much maintenance using man made material as there is using wood. Deck Pros and refinish Co have said this from the begening. Mold / Mildew will grow on most anything including us if we stay still long enough. The define of low maintenance started right after the first stick of composite came off the drying racks and will not stop. Plain and simple an outside project requires work to keep it looking nice, look at it the same as your car left alone without any care its not going to look/ run all that good no matter how much you paid for it. Far as TT Decking/Rail systems go it is in the high end along with Moisture Sheild and a couple others. The install instrustions far as ground clearance/cross ventalation/spacing/sister joists.... must be followed to get any place near what the Co say will happen. It is possible to put a high grade finish on composite material, I have done this with very good results but doing this is not what the normal Wallet wants to hear so its not what the Co say. South American lumber..ipe,garapa,masenramduba.. left alone with no finish exposed to the sun will go gray/silver installed corectley this material requires as close to low maintenance as a person can get but same kinda deal its all in the define it has to be kept clean or its going to look like Sh!ttt in a few years. Like the Contractor that broke me in usta say " when I came to this Country you could get a 5 cent beer and a free lunch but there aint no 5 cent beer now and there is no free lunch so you might just as well go to Work!!! We are getting ready to replace our 1700 sq ft deck around our geodesic dome in Washington State. I really appreciate all the comments. I have been doing a bunch of research and asking people that build, sell decking, etc. The main concern I hear/see is fading of composite (all brands). We saw some that was sitting in a lumberyard that looked terrible--dark green and black spotted algea(it had been returned after not being used for about a year was the explanation by the worker). I am real suspious now of using composite to have a beautiful deck after even 3 years since the shaded areas could end up being hideous next to the faded ares. One contractor showed us a small composite deck in full sun that was white after about 2 years--it had started out a beautiful wood tone. The fading is an issue with all composite from what I read/hear AND you cannot paint it. You can clean it, but when you read the warrantee, pressure washing voids it on some of the brands so hopefully there is some good product (30 Seconds?) that would make this twice yearly chore easy. I understand that large amounts of money is being spent in advertising--how it lasts a lifetime, is easy to work with, uses recycled material, etc. The real test is time. What will our deck look like in 5 years and will it need replaced again because it looks bad? I have written 3 manufacturers asking for decks that I can look at that have been installed for over 5 years. So far, no response. Unfortunately, a geodesic dome like ours wouldn't look right without the raised deck, but I'm still researching.... I would think that lawsuits are going to need to happen to prevent manufacturers from lying about "cool to the touch", etc. We have had the preserved wood deck for 30 years. It requires staining about every other year (Behr) which seems high maintanence, but it lasted AND looked great.

my wife and i couldn't be happier with our TT Earthwood Tropical Walnut deck which will be a year old in a few months. i've just begun to put the final set of stairs on it and hope to have some lighting on it by the end of the summer. The finish faded ~10% i'd say, which we fully expected per reports. Our dogs play constantly on the deck and it's held up tremendously. It has it's fair share of scratches which fade and blend in time and actually has added to the decks appearance/appeal, in my opinion. We used the conceaLOC hidden fasteners and would recommend them if they're in the budget. Easy to use and, again, adds to the clean appearance of the finish. Our deck is solid as a rock - i built it without cutting any corners - as far as i was concerned at least. i think a deck's stability/ability to not squeak/creak/etc. lies mostly in the framing, not what you lay on it's top. just my opinion. do the hidden work underneath right - the rest just falls into place. i'm no expert, but this i know. you won't be disappointed in the Earthwood product in my humble opinion.

WOW! absolutely fabulous! did you build it yourself? What railings/posts are those and in what color? how did you attach the fascia board without seeing any screws? I want your deck!!! sorry for all the questions!!! where in central jersey are you? we are in flemington...

A family member who is a contractor did the bulk with reasonable contribution from me.

The railings are TimberTech Radiance in White. The deck is Earthwood in Teak color. The columns are HB&G Permacast Columns (we have to paint these to match the Radiance posts and rails. Ordered everything from Home Depot. Word of advice, do not order pressure treated lumber form Home Depot. The width of many pieces were not consistent. If you buy 2X10s of varying lengths some will be 9 1/4" while others may be as much as 9 3/8 etc... Added a great deal of time trying to get everything level.

As far as the facia board there are screws, perhaps the image is not zoomed enough to notice. For the deck boards we used the hidden fasteners. I am in Marlboro township.

Sharp looking deck, you have good taste! I'd like to see more pictures posted as you progress and finsh. How much do you think it would have cost JUST to do the overhang roof?

Good looking deck jerseyguy, you all did a fine job.

On a side note, all 2x10's vary in size, ie; 9 1/4" to 9 1/2" not just HD's. That's why if I have beams carrying the joist I don't install them til after joist are up, then shim the shorter ones that don't rest on the beam. Much faster doing it that way.

Fabulous deck!!! I am just looking into getting estimates to get a deck built. I wanted a deck with a gazebo for shade, but this is even better! And I love the color, I will have to see if Timbertech Earthwood is available in our area. I have not seen it, but I have not looked many places yet, and most composites are special order.

The TimberTech Earthwood is available through Home Depot as a special order product. Also, due to the size of the order they shaved 10% off the total cost making their quote more competitive than some of the other local lumber yards that carry Timbertech. I ordered from Home Depot because I thought if I ran into any problems they would stand behind the product they sold me.

At some point I have to go over the receipts to figure what it ultimately ended up costing me. However, it is still not done yet so the cost continues to climb. I just ordered Azek beadboard & trim for the ceilings and to wrap the beams stick to the maintenance free nature of this project.

All of this composite/PVC stuff is a lot more costly than wood. I can't wait till it is done. I still need to install lighting, fans, gutters, soffits etc. So it is a slow go just working on the weekends.

John agrees with Al all framing lumber is mis milled and has been all the while I have been in the Business. One thing,at least around here, the box stores sell above ground contact pt material .25 not the high grade ground contact .40

TemberTech got it right with the earthwood series everyone seems to like it including my Wallets. As with all composites the fade factor is still there. Also the pre-groved/clip system looks pretty good. The clips alltogether have been a real mess in the past but the nature of the system TT is selling looks pretty good Im about to try it and I know several Contractors who already have with good results. I'm working on my first TT earthwood deck. I still passed on using the clips tho. Pre-drill then screw in the Headcoats. SS post with SS cable for rails. Very pricey deck, but will be extra nice. Thumbs up on the TT earthwood. John, let us know how the clips work out.

Hey folks,

I am not sure if I posted these before but here it goes. I completed this Timbertech deck and overhead last summer. So far very happy. To date the only thing that went wrong is the facia on the deck opened up from freezing water over the winter. I had to remove and reinstall with more screws.

The objective was to have this be a totally maintenance free deck. Other than having to paint the fiberglass columns on the overhead nothing else requires maintenance.

Centraljerseyguy, how is your deck doing now? Still happy with the TimberTech? I'm thinking hard about the Earthwood line (and your beautiful deck is a big reason why), but (as I just posted in a new thread) I'm worried about the durability of the "coating" as compared to some other composites that are of uniform composition. I've seen a lot of TimberTech decks on this site, but I haven't seen a lot of followup. Hoping to get some updates from you and others. Thanks!
