Pool art for sheer descent columns - Bronze? Stone?

Hello all,

Our new pool was just filled Friday, and we are so excited. (First time pool owners.) :)

One of the features of the pool is that it has two 3' x 3' tiled columns with a seating ledge in the water in between, with bluestone tops, and a sheer descent coming out of the front of each one. (I will try to post a pic or a link.)

The bluestone tops are large flat platforms, and I would like to put some statuary of some type on them, but don't know where to buy it or what kind to use.

Anyone have a good source for pool art, have any ideas for what to use or have photos of their own pool art?

I was thinking of a pair of bronze cranes or herons, or something kind of Asian looking since the pool is formal. (It's a 15' x 45' lap pool with a tanning ledge.

Here is the photo. (I think.) Just need some ideas of what to put on top of those columns.

I placed planters on mine. It's not art, but you can get some more ornate concrete ones to place there. I've seen planters used as water features on capstones like yours.

I was looking for something simple, that resembled the flagstone, but I ran across far more that had a formal look. Some of those suckers were $$$$$$!

Mine is getting filled as we speak and the area will continue to be a work in progress with an Ivory travertine patio floor down the road. This is a modest existing pool remodel. We took out the silly spa with its four puny jets, odd size, and no light and made it into a conversation niche. In the before design you couldn’t heat up the spa without heating up the entire pool. Surface- Wet Edge New Zealand Tropical- peal matrix but with the deeper blue/green dye used in the Chilean Tahoe. The last picture with spa and orange coping is the Before .

Looks great. Our pool is 25 years old so when we decided to resurface and tile the pool we considered all sorts of options for changing the shape and design. But in the end it would have run $$$$ instead of $$ so PebbleSheen and tile it is. Here's a couple pictures of the Aqua Blue after a day of chemicals (please excuse the dead grass from the pool company!), though the camera just can't do the true color justice. Different angle/time of day, different water color. The water probably needs a few more days of circulation for the end color to come through but I think it's probably pretty close. We really struggled with the Aqua Blue / Blue Granite decision.

Yes, it is fun seeing all the progress! Tx for the tips on taking pictures. I am taking lots so that I have that for future reference like you mentioned and so I can make a scrapbook. I agree with you on the swimming privacy. Unfortunately in this neighborhood you can only have 5' fences and they can only be either black chain link fences or vinyl fences. I would definetly like a vinyl fence for privacy but they are so expenses since the size has to be cut down, etc. Since we are spending so much on the pool, we will landscape some about the screen and maybe put up a fence later. Now I am working on my research of plants, etc. so I can get some nice stuff put up after everything is completed. Gunite was done today. The majority of it was covered due to rain so I can't get good pictures of it but once that comes off, I will take some and post then. Right now I peaked under the cover a little and I am pleased that I added that additional step to get in/out of the deepend swimout and the height of my additional bench in the shallowend for sunning purposes.

I've been lurking on this forum as we are in the beginning stages of renovating/resurfacing our pool :). Anyway, we live in GA and when we bought our house 4 years ago, it came with an existing pool. My parents never closed their pool in the winter, and we decided to do the same with ours. Winter covers are ugly, and we like looking out over the pool and yard in the winter even though it's too cold to swim. We have a bunch of large poplars around our pool and a they tend to clog up the skimmer in the fall. Once the leaves begin falling, we put out the leaf cover and leave it in place a month or two until around the beginning of December. We secure it with concrete blocks, but the net still tends to drape down in the water a few inches. We let it drape and we scoop out the leaves using a leaf rake. The net basically just keeps the leaves from clogging the skimmer basket and/or falling to the bottom. There is still a bit of maintenance involved and it may not be very professional looking, but it works for us :)

They're not cheap, but they always have great stuff. I usually see something that I like, and then I google terms in the description to find something less expensive.

I have a similar spot on my pool at the edge of the vanishing edge. I am thinking of a fire bowl for mine...run off a propane tank hidden behind the pool wall. Not sure yet if I'm going to do that or just a plant. I like the planters smnobles has. Love this funky recycled fire bowl...not quite the look you are going for though!

A fire bowl would be too cool. I think I remember you mentioning that before. Make sure to post pics when/if you do that. I think something like that would work well for my pool too.

If I had thought it out more, I'd have gone with built-in planters (the same shape I have now), but with spill-overs. I love that look! I think that would work well on Oakrunfarm's pool too.

Why do I get a craving for milk every time I see that name?

I just opened up Oakrunfarm's picture. I think bowls like mine wouldn't look right, but urns sure would!

My pool looks more earthy (that's the best word I can think of to describe it), and the OP's pool looks classy. I picture some gorgeous urns like these...

I really like the firebowls a LOT, but think our pool is a bit too formal for them.

The Horchow site is pretty neat, and I particularly think (as others have mentioned) that urns - maybe atop pedestals - would look good. (I also like the Foo Dogs and herons/cranes.)

The columns are 3' x 3,' so I need something kinda on the beefy side.

smbnobles, we don't have a dairy farm, but we are planning to start raising mini-cows (just for pets) later this year. (Your dog is such a cutie by the way! :)

Mini-cows? Isn't that an oxymoron? ;-)

Those columns didn't look that big in the picture. 3' x 3' is pretty substantial. I bet you're able to find something cool to go there though. I don't know why, but I just picture something Grecian.

They also call them "belt buckle" cows because they usually come up to below waist high. They are cute.

I agree with you that something Grecian would look nice - maybe with a Greek key border. I also like things with an Asian flair.

No rush. I will find something "just right."

Omigod, those are adorable! I have a Golden that we call a cow, but it's just not the same. :-)
