Kitchen Rave-- very efficient solution....

We have all of our plates and glasses in the island across from the dishwasher. I can unload the dishwasher in record time-- I just grab the stuff, make a 1/4 turn and plop it in the island drawers. I highly, highly recommend this solution & had no idea how efficient it would be until I unloaded the DW for the first time.

I also don't have any dish/glass system in the drawers-- I just place them in and they stay put.

Anyway, if any of you are in the planning stages, this is a really great solution.

any chance you can take a pic of your glasses in the drawers. Glass storage has been my biggest issue as I'm not planning any upper cabs. Thanks!

My husband is the picture, guy, so I can! I got the cushy cupboards liners, but haven't cut them to fit the drawer yet. I actually just place the glasses inside the drawer and shut it. They don't shift b/c I have the soft-close drawers.

Tomorrow I'll have DH take a picture of the DW open and the glasses in the open drawer. It is really great not having to stand up and reach up to put things away.

Hi, Some ideas would be: 1) Cheapest, add a dimmer. This would reduce heat at the lamps. Downside is that the lighting level is lower also. 2) Add above cabinet lights. These sit on top of the cabinets. They provide ambiant light by bouncing light off the ceiling. I have these in my kitchen and they look good. Note this is good for gentle background lighting. They look great! I was going with soapstone and had a slab I loved, but the stone yard ruined it during fabrication (they cut the cooktop hole where the sink went). They didn't have anymore dark soapstone so we looked at other options. We now view what happened as a lucky break because we ended up choosing honed jet mist and I love love love it! In retrospect I think the soapstone patina would have driven my husband batty. The honed jet mist still looks perfectly smooth (like soapstone) but the polish has been removed. The only problem we've encountered is the feet of appliances leaving marks. They do fade in a week or two, but to avoid getting them I just put the bread-maker etc. on a dishtowel or cutting board when in use.

This kitchen is such a tube. Each time I just glimpse the plan, I try to move the walkpath to one of the two sides and eliminate one wall of cupboards, thereby putting the action into a staple-shaped U on the other side, allowing the cook's area to be dead-ended. I'm the one who lived 30 years with the stove and dishwasher facing each other in the old 8-foot wide corridor kitchen. Yes, you have to have rules. Your walk-through destination beyond the kitchen will guarantee there's always interrupting traffic. In this case, I would have the rule, "Everybody has to fill your arms with dishes and bring them to the dishwasher area after dinner before you can leave this room." They haul the stuff, plunk it, people leave, THEN someone opens the dishwasher door. During big events, you need the "nobody uses the laundry" rule. I used to require all party guests to stand "there or there" outside the work triangle on penalty of being banned. The more I look at the above plan, the more it looks like the kitchen I've torn out. If you must live with this configuration along a corridor, it's better to put the sink and the refrig on same wall and the stove on the other. OR just make a one-wall kitchen without the staple shape--stove, then sink, then refrig all one one side without a triangle. That way, no one traps anyone in place. And put the refrig close to the table and/or the entrance site for grocery bags. Could you use a smaller refrigerator? A narrower one?

Thanks everyone for the ideas above! Very thoughtful. Unfortunately, a lot are non starters because of some unusual features of our old house. I don’t want to sound like I’m being negative by rejecting everything though! First, I appreciate the comments about an old house and inadequate ducting. On further thought, the bedroom isn’t really significantly warmer than the rest of the house.... maybe just a degree or two. So I probably spoke too soon when I complained about it being at the end of a run. The bigger issue is just that son wants it in the 60s to be comfortable, which means blasting two big units all night to cool 2500 sf total, when he’s only using 150 sf of that. So I don’t think the solution is fixing duct lines or insulation. Second, I’d like to avoid any permanent units (like a mini split) because the home is exposed block walls and architecturally significant. I think the architectural society would come with pitchforks and chase me out of town! Ceiling fans are the perfect obvious solution.... except the middle of the ceiling Is where the one vintage air register is, and there is no power running through the ceiling. And even if I were open to moving it, there is no power running through the ceiling and no way to get it there. Because, as mentioned above, the walls are exposed block. Lighting is all from plug in lamps. So we cant run wires through the walls because there’s no drywall. I guess that also means no booster fan in the duct. So given the extremely limited flexibility my vintage house provides, it sounds like my only solution is a free standing unit. Which I kind of assumed! Thanks all!

Great idea! I'm looking at your pictures you posted last week; what is the distance from your island to the counter run with the DW? In my current planned U-shaped layout, I have located the DW across from the island and have an island drawer "marked" for dishes. I'm happy to hear it works well.

It works well-- it is very ergonomic. I believe we have 44" between the island and the DW.

Danielle, echo the rave - we have the same set up and it is super easy. Lyno and Malhgold - I believe you saw my kitchen last week - don't know if you looked at the slide show - here's a pic of the dish drawer. You can see glasses and cups/mugs in top drawer. I also just posted a floor plan on that thread that shows you how the new kitchen is laid out, if you're interested.

I checked out all of your pictures (probably 4 separate times-- I just love your kitchen. So beautiful).

I like your dish drawers. We've never kept mugs or teacups in the house (we're espresso drinkers), but I think with this new storage system we'd have room for all sorts of mugs, teacups, you name it.

With my layout, the extra steps have to be taken somewhere--either when unloading the dw or when gathering the dishes to put on the table. My preference is to have dishes stored close to the table. I tend to unload the dw when I have the spare time. Getting stuff onto the table always seems hectic and that's where I need my systems as streamlined as possible. The extra plus is that others don't have to come all the way into the kitchen to grab a glass or plate. It still only takes about 5 minutes to unload the dw.

Susie, I posted my finished kitchen a few days ago - search for "Finally - Elizpiz's Finished Kitchen". There's lots of pix there!

The long drawers are 36" by 7" high by 12" deep (internal dimensions). Island is 92" long by 42" wide

My drawers are 24 x 24. My island is only 48 x 24, so I have 6 24 x 24 drawers (two of which are shallow, so I use one for parchment paper for baking and another for napkins and dishrags.

If you search for Old Farmhouse, my pictures should pop up.

Me, too! My dish storage is at the end of the island run, immediately adjacent to the dish drawers. I love the convenience, when unloading the DDs, to simply pivot and place! We eat most meals at the island, so whether taking dishes from the drawers or putting them in the DW, the convenience is wonderful.

Eliz, duh, I've only looked at your slideshow a dozen times! One of my FAVORITE kitchens. Makes me sick when I see old farmhouses. (we moved out of our 100 year old 13 years ago, and I'm still sick we had to move)

I'm still looking for Danielle's I'm sure I've seen it and loved it. Haven't seen one on here that isn't beautiful.

Thanks for the measurements. We are still in the layout planning stage, but you all have sold me on a must have! Dish drawers in the island!

Me too! We have our flatware here as well, and when I wrote my finished kitchen description last summer I wrote about just a quick pivot and ta-da!

One to the best things about dishes and cups in drawers is that it makes it sooo easy for the kids to set the table, and unload the dishwasher for that matter. My kids are way more agreeable about setting the table since we redid our kitchen.
