DH surprised me!

He popped out after work and came back with a new set of Lagostina pots and pans. I've never had a nice set of pots and pans, and I'm ridiculously happy. I had cheap, tinny ones for years, and then he bought me a teflon coated set which was better than I had, but I wasn't wild about them. I didn't complain either set though. I'm in the kitchen a lot, so this surprise is nice.

We don't usually buy each other special occasion gifts, and that's the way we both like it. We don't like any occasion to dictate to us that we need to buy something/anything, although we always go out to dinner.

Maybe it's silly of me to feel like this over pots and pans, but I'm happy :)

I had forgotten that in one of my garden musings I thought how nice a pergola would be behind the garage. That window is to a little used office room. I'd love to put in double doors there so I have easier access to the side yard. Then a small patio with a pergola would be perfect! I guess that's all part of the long term plan though. :D Then I'd have room for TWO arches! Actually, it is sooo bizarrely windy here I am worried about an arbor. We'd probably have to set it in cement...which means no changing my mind once it is in place...something I am well known for doing. I do like to put in edibles too. The flower garden area has a tart cherry (the tree closest to the house) a carmine jewel cherry shrub, a quince, gooseberry, 3 aronias, 4 blueberries, some chard, lettuce, eggplant and a tomato for good measure. And some beans. I helped out at a local garden this morning where they are putting in an mini-orchard and I was thinking how it was about the same area as our front yard...hmmmm...I could do the same thing in our yard! But I do love flowers too, so I'd have to definitely make room for plenty of color. Also my son has an herb garden right next to the house--chives, parsley, oregano and sage. Looks like some dill is sprouting too from last year. Calmity, what did you make your arbor out of? Thanks for all the comments. I love hearing ideas. :)

THANK YOU everyone for your very nice comments. This is the first I was able to check back, and was I ever surprised. We are located 40 miles north and a little west of Harrisburg in a rural community. We are surrounded by farmland which they no longer prepare the 'old fashioned way'. It is now done by the no till method, and until the crop is somewhat mature the fields look ugly to me. I am of the generation of laying in bed, late at night, listening to the John Deere tractors putt, putt. I will post some close photos of the little house/potting shed, and some garden areas. The fourth photo background plant is a 'Karley Rose' grass. It is a favorite. When the dew is on it in the morning, and the sun comes up, it looks like it is wearing diamonds, as does the Smoke Tree. A lot of the daylilies found a good home, but over several years the DL bed became taken over with thistles. I contacted the county extension agent and he said in the DL bed they would be practically impossible to eradicate since they are a perennial. The daylilies were planted on a grid of 24" with not much room to work and it became such a chore I gave up on them. I am glad to say the thistles are almost non-existent, but being surrounded by fields they will always make their presence known, (along with a zazillion dandelion), but controllable. The agent though I might have gotten them originally from mushroom mulch. I will try and post more photos tomorrow evening. My DH and I are now making a wind chime with 8 chimes. I found the directions on the length of each chime and I marked the Conduit accordingly. My DH did the manual labor, but I would have tackled it if he had not taken pity on me. It is almost ready for it's unveiling. It sounds great with 3/4" tubing and the longest is 24" and a fraction long. Thanks again. Jane

Betty- would never dream of taking that away from him. He also sits at top of stairs and can see through the windows in entryway and the top windows in that corner. He can see all the people go by with their dogs. He barks at them like he is telling them to let him join them. Actually, the plant in that corner is a long basket arrangement I picked up from someone at work. It is simply resting on top of that large jar that we fleck spray painted years ago for our first home. In the pic it looks pretty good. We put an uplight back there and at night it looks pretty cool. Just need to get the right plants back there because in person the one there really is not that nice there. Can't use real because of doggy and naughty kitty. Thanks for all the nice comments. What is really nice about this room kinda fits a recent post about decorating more for look than function. Although this room does look really clean and neat it is really family friendly. We upgraded the microfiber to a stronger grade because we knew doggy would get up there when we are not home. The chair dh picked out did not seem very comfortable when he showed it to me. OMG it is so comfy that we fight over it, although it is his throne technically. We now go in there and drink coffee, chat with visitors or just rest. You can put your feet up on the sofa with no worries. The doggy drool that inevitably ends up on the glass tabletops wipes off easily, the round edges are soft on your legs when chasing him around the room. I am glad we did not do a rug under the dining table because when doggy chases kitty, she likes to sit on the chairs and bat at him while he is under there, he does not knock the chairs over. They simply slide out of place. We thought of curtain panels in dining room that puddled on floor but thought that would be too tempting for kitty to play in. Pups water/food station is on the slate floor. His dribbles from drinking land on the slate and by the time he hits the pergo it is all gone. I hate stepping on wet dribble. Yuck. So I think we accomplished the look we were hoping for. Magazine style with family function.

Dprisock: thanks for the pic of your chandelier . . . it's gorgeous! Do you think you might add shades to it? The reason I ask is that my current chandy has the candle lights that face up, like yours, and I've always been frustrated with the light it gives off for our evening meals. I've considered adding shades to mine, but now plan to just replace it instead. Susan, no, the chandelier isn't centered to the room. We did that on purpose so that we wouldn't have to walk around the table to get to the living room. It actually looks great IRL. The room's wide enough to keep the table off center. Kim, good call on a darker chandy to add more weight and presence. I see your point and agree. Sundial: another New Mexican??? How cool! What part, if I may ask? Valinsv: thanks for the link. I love it and am having a hard time tearing myself away from it. Tish, I agree about the visual weight. With our cream colored walls and whitewashed ceilings, the pewter is disappearing. Red: thanks. Hmm... I think, broccoli. And there is a nice sized pot that is begging to be used for making soup. This weekend this set will get a work out, because I'm cooking Easter dinner. The only thing is, it says not to add salt to the cold water in the pots, so I will have to remember that.

Enjoy them to your heart's content, Susan!

Sometimes many of us, who've become so addicted to too much stuff ... find it difficult to take pleasure in simple things.

With much of that "stuff", after a while (too soon) ... ending up in the "landfill" (read "dump") ... less than two miles from my house.

Nothing wrong with being happy and excited over a new set of pots and pans. In fact...I love getting stuff like that. When hubby got his 20 year gift from work they gave him a list to pick from. What did he pick??? Me a set of really good cookware! I was so touched and just beside myself when they arrived by Fed Ex.
You are soooo going to love having a really good pan to sear something in! Then...deglaze to perfection! It took me a while to remember not to salt cold water but now it is a habit.

A few years ago DH said he wanted new pots & pans for Christmas. At first I thought he was kidding but he really wanted them. He picked them out and I bought them. We love them. It was a great gift.

LOL....I always tell Denny that pots and pans are divorce causers....then look him straight in the eyes and tell him..."Don't buy me pots and pans for a gift".....Gifts to me are supposed to be something I want and if I need pots and pans they are a need....not a want.
We get a big laugh out of it...because I have gotten them for gifts way too many times in our nearly 43 years.
Last year for our anniversary he bought me the Cannon digital Rebel...and a few years before that he bought me Playstation 2....Those were completely unexpected and I was thrilled with them. I guess I might be a little weird.

We went out last year and bought new big fryers and I love them..And now I need a big pot or two.

I'm glad you are really happy with them...

What a great gift!! Over the years my DH gave me everything from Tiffany jewelry to a cordless phone (when they first came out), but my favorite of all was a beautiful red IBM Selectric typewriter. This was before the days of computers, of course. I was home alone with babies much of the time that winter, and I loved to write. So the new typewriter meant a lot to me, just as your new set of pots and pans means a lot to you. You have a good man!

I think that's a great gift! And he bought them because they would make you happy which is a great reason for giving a gift. Have fun with them and be sure and let us know some of the things you cook and how you liked them :-)

Wow! That is some very nice cookware, that I'm sure will probably serve you well for the rest of your lifetime. How pretty and it looks so elegant too!

I have some nice Duncan Hines stainless cookware my Mom gave me 37 years ago, and it is still like new and I love it.

I know how you feel Susan! I LOVE getting kitcheny things. Whenever I get asked what I want for Christmas from my family, it's always something kitcheny.

DH gives me items like that and gift certificates from the local greenhouse cause he knows my infatuation with houseplants. I get him g.c. from the music instrument store so he can add to his drum kit!

When it's something you want, it doesn't matter if it's something practical or whimsical.

I do love kitcheny and practical gifts... especially when it's not even a birthday or other occasion. And I feel this was very thoughtful, because he knew it was something I would enjoy and wouldn't go out and buy for myself. He's a good man :)
