So many questions so many answers

First off, hat's off to John and Ken! You two are true pros and have a way of answering our questions without making us out like dummies!

So here I go with mine! TWP it is (I think!). Since the 100 series is not available where I live in....wait for it.....wait for it.....California (no shock there), I ahve the 500 series available at KM. I've narrowed down to three choices:

Ceder Tone

California Redwood - questionable name later in my post

Light Cedar

Opinions? frankly they all look alike on a sample piece i've treated.

Last weekend, just finished a really nice looking, massive redwood arbor over my patio. Got a killer deal from my next door neigbor lumber yard owner on the wood. The wood is impecable and absoulutly stunning. he picked the best stuff. Took me 3 1/2 weekends, and that was helping the guy build it.

So questions:

- TWP 500 instructions say "NEW WOOD: All new wood must be thoroughly wetted by rain or tap water at least twice to open wood grain and remove excess surface tannins. Allow a minimum of 48 hours of good drying conditions before applying TWP." - is it really necessary to water the wood at least twice?

- also, my 6x6 posts are very smooth - need to pre-treat? Absolutely necessary with TWP?

I'm anxious to start the process as I have one more weekend credit with my wife! She said I owe her a vacation from our 2 yo and 4 yo! probably true - harder to take care of 2 little ones than to build a deck...

Thanks again to all who contribute here. Don't lurk like me though. I wish I had just posted earlier so my time crunch is not as bad.

I dont agree with the twp guys in a lot of ways including the wet down thing I never do it with any new wood. I hate the redwood color. J.

thanks deck guru! How about the pre-treat from, I guess what is mill glaze?
Will try to post before/after pictures.

And to ask that which I didn't in my earlier post...California Redwood color? What kind of name is that? What... is there Sahara Redwood species? I sometimes wish these companies would just tell it like it is...light redwood, dark redwood, very dark redwood, or even jsut red!

A bitter winter could kill the roots and the tree if they are all in potting soil but this can be averted by several inches of insulating mulch (or snow). Just make sure you trap out or poison all field mice (voles) in the area during fall so they don't girdle your trees in winter. If you have pine voles in your area they seem to like eating roots of trees in potting soil, maybe because its a great medium for them to get around in- soft easy digging and relatively dry. It's a good idea to protect the trunks with some kind of barrier- even foil works well. You can remove it when trees begin to grow in spring. If you have rabbits, protection must stay well above the snow line.

Hi Vickie, Your right, lilies comprise a large genera of possibilities, that's what makes them so interesting. I like to use lilies to go in between other plants, as an added exclamation point in the garden....this helps hide the ripening foliage and reduces the need to stake. As a beginner, you may find the asiatic or LA bulbs the easiest. Usually they are cheaper in price, multiply quickly and the least fussy...although most bulbs are pretty easy....you may even be able to do some trading with others in your area. Lots of times the 'big box stores' sell bulbs pretty cheap, only problem there is you never really know what your getting. Here is some pics of different types. The OP's point about Emily's posts moving member posts down and out of sight is valid. When I see a flurry of her posts I don't spend a lot of time looking for real member content to respond to - I just move on to another forum. And that is ultimately what will be the death of GW Home Decorating. We are a commodity to be mined (and not just on Emily's posts) but that shouldn't surprise anyone. Yes, it's her job and no I don't fault her for doing what she is told to or what she comes up with on her own to fulfill her job requirements. But that doesn't change the ick factor.

Mill glaze is another urban mith like placing the growth rings down both have been disproved at least 20 years ago but they still pop up even now. J.
